Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Bitcoin isn't the most suited for this use case because of the long confirmation times. Can you imagine adding a credit and waiting minutes just to start your game.

Most arcade machines that I see, don't see any particular use and since we are talking about pennies here, I guess you could let the player play with 0 confirmations.

There are some companies developing such zero confirmation solutions as well.

And what about faster confirmation coins like Litecoin? Are they worth the shot? I would surely become addicted to an arcade machine with such capabilities to pay with crypto.  Grin

I imagine, the best way to implement an arcade that accepts bitcoin, is to use bespoke tokens which you can put into the machines, but must be bought prior.

This is how the asian arcades work.

Bitcoin can then be used to buy these tokens.

in my opinion using fiat in this situation better than using bitcoin cause bitcoin prices varie so arcade machines need internet connections to keep taking value of 0.25 cents also there is the confirmation problem and i think saving bitcoin for the future at this moment better then wastung it on old games probably can ply on his phnoe now

As an aside I'm very curious to know why arcade games haven't advanced one bit in twenty years. I still see the same games at the seaside that were there when I was a nipper. I fully assumed they'd be virtual reality miracles by now.

I would have to say that that would be very easy to do.  The issues is how many people would be playing it at first.  The machine software may get outdated before enough people play it to make a profit.

most people believe it or not are actually honest,  (its the reason why retailers like Tesco and sainsburys allow self check out)  stick a camera up and most people will act honestly, even if the camera is not working.  there's been tons of research done in this area, we as humans are really predictable..... Grin  i think in the future someone will come up with a problem to the 0 confirmatiion thing anyway.  and yes playing games using bitcoins would be class, and is going to be a necessity in the future anyway cause we aint going to use coins......... Already been done, I remember a picture with an arcade machine running what probably was mame, and you were able to pay and play games on it, it had the street fighter cabinet, I will try to find the picture.

Edit: Anyway couldn't find that one but I have found this:

I doubt that there will ever be these kind of machines. With Bitcoin's long transaction time, you would be waiting a long time to play the game. We might see these machines if Bitcoin's transactions becomes instant.

This is great and all, but wouldn't you have to wait a long time to start playing the games. This is where fiat or a credit card becomes very handy. Bitcoin just can't do all the things that fiat can and vise versa, thats why we need both in the world.

You can always accept 0 confirmations or wait for Lightning Network which will make instant payments like this pretty much possible so stuff like this could perfectly run under the Bitcoin ecosystem, it already does in casino online games.

I personally very much have. I look back to the days where is rush to the "Time Zone" at the mall after school, and blow $15 on street fighter. Oh, those are the days. Of only there was a full bitcoin arcade...

Sure, you could always accept 0 confirmations, but people could intentionally double spend, no matter how cheap it is. Have you seen people scam for less than a cent here?

I have been looking for such machine that would serve that purpose, but I can't seem to find it. It will be real fun to play some of the arcade classics with your BTC. Don't you think?  Cheesy

Well the idea is really great.
but the best thing to make that work is to have a card in the arcade.
then that card is where you will load your fiat or btc.
which will be your coins. like in some amusements. they are already using card.
for their machines. so its really much possible for it.

I personally very much have. I look back to the days where is rush to the "Time Zone" at the mall after school, and blow $15 on street fighter. Oh, those are the days. Of only there was a full bitcoin arcade...

Already been done, I remember a picture with an arcade machine running what probably was mame, and you were able to pay and play games on it, it had the street fighter cabinet, I will try to find the picture.

Edit: Anyway couldn't find that one but I have found this:

This is great and all, but wouldn't you have to wait a long time to start playing the games. This is where fiat or a credit card becomes very handy. Bitcoin just can't do all the things that fiat can and vise versa, thats why we need both in the world.

You can always accept 0 confirmations or wait for Lightning Network which will make instant payments like this pretty much possible so stuff like this could perfectly run under the Bitcoin ecosystem, it already does in casino online games.

Sure, you could always accept 0 confirmations, but people could intentionally double spend, no matter how cheap it is. Have you seen people scam for less than a cent here?

No. I haven't seen anyone scam less than a cent here. Who is that stupid to scam less than a cent, I have seen people scam multiple cents though. Why do they even do that, it's not like they are making a decent profit.

well considering that it's only something like $0.25 in order to have a play at the arcade machine, there isn't much point of trying to scam someone out of an amount that small. Plus, assuming the Bitcoin becomes a popular currency I doubt many people will be interested in cheating a whole $0.25 out of an arcade.

I do agree that we need both fiat and limited currencies together in the world, however. Both serve their purposes.

This might sound crazy but do you ever imagined yourself playing with an arcade cabinet, with the ability to pay with Bitcoins instead of a quarter? (0.25 usd)

I have been looking for such machine that would serve that purpose, but I can't seem to find it. It will be real fun to play some of the arcade classics with your BTC. Don't you think?  Cheesy

Bitcoin isn't the most suited for this use case because of the long confirmation times. Can you imagine adding a credit and waiting minutes just to start your game.

you can solve this by using system that work off-chain like bitpay, so you only wait for the instant sending of bitcoin, not confirmations needed

also i thought it was done with cash not credit card, i remember paying with coins...

I would use Xapo with it's off-chain instant transaction confirmations. No need to have small transactions like this on the Blockchain. You can use emulators online and link it to

Xapo and play it through your browser. I know there was a forum, where they had their own in-house token system and you paid with these tokens to play the games. It was fun,

but I see the site is closed down now.  Sad

Well, if Bitcoin cannot be used due to its slow confirmation times, what about faster ones like Litecoin, Dogecoin or even Ethereum. It will be really interesting to see such payments done on an arcade machine. I am just eager to play one like that or own one.  Cheesy

Would be better to make some website and allow people to pay with bitcoin, like travian or similiars games instead of fiat ,i dont think arcade is something anymore that brings the childs into them, the ps3 ,wii and others just made the children to stay at home and play unlimited for free.

I would think this would revive the arcade machines in a big way.
Now that everybody has either an xbox or PlayStation those have virtually killed going to the arcades to play them and not to mention the emulators.
Having this new innovation combined with the old classic nostalgia would be a good marriage I would have to say to reinvent itself and appeal to the next generation of gamers.
I really miss playing Rampage at the arcade hall. Undecided

Confirmations will really be a problem. I remember people in the arcades using coins of less value, dropped in the slot with an impulse in order to cheat and play less for their games (it worked in some arcades), so people would definitely try to cheat it and double spend.

The idea is cool nevertheless. I like it at least.

If people scammed for $0.25, they'd be caught. It's a physical machine with time stamps. It's easy to figure out who it was.

And don't forget Pacman too. It would be so cool to play these classics on a machine which would accept Bitcoins. But if this cannot be achieved, what about earning Bitcoins playing these games? I would become so addicted to such thing.  Cheesy

If what your asking is a Classic Arcade Machine that receive Bitcoin then it would require something very hard like a custom built small amounts of satoshi coins just for the game and needs new added system that recognize the physical coin itself. Probably will be very expensive to built the whole system.

A small screen that just shows a QR code should be more than adequate. No need for coins.

The arcades in my area offer machines giving small tokens as a reward.. These tokens can be collected and traded for gifts... Why can these machines not be adapted to pay

small amounts of Bitcoins back to the player, instead of these tokens. The more you play, the bigger the rewards and the longer you can play. When the kids run out of money, the

parents could just quickly transfer some via their mobile phones.... {This could be done from home, or work or the pub next door} Our arcade area has "Nanny" services.  Roll Eyes

Having it print out a paper wallet is a privacy concern. You'd need to sweep the addresses right then or you'd be at risk. Bad implementation, IMO.

At shop at Brazil there still exists arcades games they use a card like our credit and debit cards,we get them close and the machine deduct our balance, every game gives you tickets, these are exchanges with gifts the more tickets the best the gift ,those would be amazing to play with bitcoin and repay some part of them as the total tickets won, imagin spend 1 btc and get back something around 0.15btc.

I would love to see a renaissance of arcade machines. I totally miss going to the arcades with my friends as a kid and have fun on the machines, it was waaay better than what kids do nowadays which is stay at home all day playing online with each other. It was great to meet with friends in real life and play in different machines with different controls, now it's all a gamepad or a mouse. Maybe Bitcoin can help making this accessible again since there would be no fears of coins being stolen as all the chiefs could get is an encrypted wallet (and the owner have a copy in another machine in case something goes wrong).

That would be amazing, I used to play pinball a lot back in the day. Another niche I think it's not really explored is having live games, not like betting but paying a contest prize to battle others for top prizes. Just like app games but with actual real money (Bitcoin) instead of game credits to buy stupid upgrades hehe.

That would be gaming of the future where you can actually spend money playing but not in weapons and locked stuff. And you also get the chance to win a top prize if you are good in it.

I think a more realistic method to achieve the same result is the ability to top up with BTC. That way while you're waiting for the funds to hit your card you can grab some chips and stuff, instead of having to wait for the confirmation at the games awkwardly.

With 0-conf. transactions it would be instant. If they required confirmations, though, that would be a great alternative.

Renting games for Bitcoin, huh? Seems pretty cool. If I could just rent an Xbox 360 or at least a PS3 with my Bitcoins, that would be so sweet. With Bitcoin, it is all a matter of convenience when paying with it in this case.  Smiley

P.S. I was thinking there should be a place with a bunch of arcade machines with the ability to accept Bitcoins or any other alt coin as payment.  Grin

I may say the most who are happy to see an arcade game here are above 30 years old as the childs wont left their ps3 or wii to go out and pay to play when they can play for free at home, forget arcades that is obsolete already,no one use them these days.

It's quite precise thing you're looking for, and i doubt you will ever find it as an IRL arcade machine, so i guess virtual game on pc will have to do.
Even if someone would to consider doing such a thing as running a arcade machine business, i really doubt it would turn out to be profitable in today's world.

I'm not sure that is a problem. The machine could just proceed with zero confirmations. If it is a double spend, well... so what? It's $0.25 and the machine really looses nothing. You could even code it so that if it comes back invalid the game ends.
McDonald's does this with credit cards. They have no idea if the card is legit before giving you your food. However creating a fake credit card transaction costs more than your meal, and so they take the risk with each sale.
With Qualcomm's new 21 bitcoin chips I think we will see lots and lots of stuff like this.

The fear of someone doing this is also negated because you know exactly who did it. They steal $0.25 from you and lose your business forever. Not really an issue.

Well, they could remake the arcade classics with better graphics, etc. and perhaps that would attract most gamers. Still, it would be great to use Bitcoin for in game purchases such as buying powers/items in Angry Birds, or even in Candy Crush with your BTC. That would be a hell of a lot of fun.  Cheesy

I love the idea of being able to play in a machine for less money. The big selling part of machines is of course hardware, as the controls are way cooler than a mouse or a videoconsole gamepad, but the social atmosphere of playing in public in the arcades, this can't be replicated at home.
For this, I would totally go to the arcades with Bitcoin if you gave some incentive to pay with Bitcoin (lower prices and im sure a lot of people would go.)

In the past arcades games were a dream to any child, today ask them if they wanna a ps3 or wii or to go shopping play at arcades machines once a month? When they can play all days with others consoles, the connection here should be the videogames companys accept bitcoin, reducing the price since bitcoin as almost cost 0 of fees soo they can keep their profit.Facebook could be the first one to take the step to accept bitcoin to get the bonus they always offer at their games.

If a kid sees the machine while their parents are shopping the mall he will want to play for sure, I did this when I was a kid and we already had consoles back then like the SNES.

If the Bitcoin machines are cheaper, then parents will be more prone to let kid play a game, of course if they are as expensive as usual no one will bother except hardcore fans.

If Facebook would adopt Bitcoin as the preferred form of payment, this would certainly gain the attention of lots of people from around the world and spread awareness of cryptocurrencies. I have always loved to buy Facebook Credits with Bitcoins. Then I could use them in Facebook games and it will be so much fun. Just my opinion.  Roll Eyes

The confirmation time is not a problem, you can just buy more than a quarter. Let say $5, then you have 20 times to play the game. In that way, you don't need to wait such a long time if you buy more credit at once.

I don't think they would do this unless they became more stable. Keep in mind that FB has to cater to investors, and investors don't want unknowns.

I think the main problem is that atm we would be targeting a niche group for these machines. Just think how many kids are going to walk past it and not be able to play it, im just not sure parents would go to the hassle of learning about btc just to let their kid play a game next time they are at the mall.

I guess we are talking about a society that it's advanced enough that they deal with Bitcoin on a daily basis. Of course we are a couple of years away but it will eventually happen, and then those machines will get used.

Yeah i mean if bitcoin goes mainstream then i would expect to see these things everywhere. but untill then i think you would find there wouldnt be very much btc in one at the end of each day, if any at all.

Yeah i mean if bitcoin goes mainstream then i would expect to see these things everywhere.

This could really happen if more people could adopt Bitcoin as a mainstream currency. Then you would see BTC ATMs and arcade machines (or consoles like PS4) that would accept Bitcoins as payment or even earn them as well. Kids would love to play and earn some pocket money while playing them. But if it cannot be achieved with Bitcoin, then maybe Ethereum would be a good shot at this.  Smiley

These tokens look really great. I wonder how it would be when using them with an arcade machine? Instead of giving the public and private keypair to the machine to pay with, it would be cool if you could just insert the Bitcoin token into the coin slot and play the game. After done playing, the machine would eject the token from the coin slot for you to reuse again (if its a paper wallet).  Smiley

I don't think this would be viable... they'd have to store information somehow for the machine to read. And if the machine can read it, others can read it as well (through portable machines).

I think that at some point Bitcoin arcade machines will be a massive niche, because kids of today will eventually get tired of playing alone on the computer.

And Bitcoin would be a main attraction for Kids (I think) now that is it a digital currency which can be earned by playing games and at the same time they won't need ID, or the required age to spend BTC, whereas banks is all the contrary. Could you imagine Bitcoin would get that far and be able to use and earn them on handheld consoles as well?

What if Nintendo adopts Bitcoin and makes a new kind of consoles with the ability to earn BTC playing Mario? Wouldn't it be cool?  Roll Eyes

I don't think confirmation time would be a problem, I've been directed to Bitpay plenty of times when making online purchases and I've never had to wait for more than a few seconds for my funds to clear. I always send from my Coinbase account though, I don't know if the two have a special arrangement.
If not, the arcade guys can always offer you a free coffee while they wait for the confirmations  Smiley

Coinbase is a bit different since there are a lot of ways to integrate with them for instant payments (since Coinbase knows for a fact if you have funds available).

I know but perhaps it could be improved and thus an arcade machine with superior graphics and gameplay would be totally awesome. Just a new arcade machine adapted to today's game style. For example, you could play Call of Duty or Titanfall right into it (like you would do with a video game console such as the Xbox or Playstation) The only difference would be that you could play it with your Bitcoins or you could just earn free bits while playing.  Cheesy

The confirmation time is not a problem, you can just buy more than a quarter. Let say $5, then you have 20 times to play the game. In that way, you don't need to wait such a long time if you buy more credit at once.

Lightning network will fix all those problems and allow super cheap transactions and instant trnsactions in situations like this, all the transactions done in the machine will get stored and then once the size is long enough sending to the blockchain, it gets sent in a packet, so no need to have every single play recorded in the blockchain individually. Literally everything is possible once we have Lightning network working sometime next year.

Technical issued of creating arcade cabinet powered by bitcoin are not the greatest obstacle here. The bigger problem is popularity of such project.
Do you think how many people who usually play at arcade has bitcoin? It is usually kids and young adults who play there. TBH I don't know any kid who own even 0.1 BTC.

This project would fail arcades machines present at some shops, being using just fiat,if someone insane convert or ad the bitcoin as payment we would see there  is a small group holding some pennies, soo as i said before nowadays this is an almost dead market.

Exactly. Why would you require confirmation for a quarter? If the Tx does turn out to be fake then the game shuts off and the operator is out $0.25 worth of game play. So what.
It would be a big hassle for the bad guy and all he would get is a few mins. of game play.

That is what credit cards do at McDonald's, for example. When you buy there the restaraunt has no idea if it is a fake transaction. They don't even check because it would take to long and cost too much. They just gamble that you would not commit credit fraud for a big mac.

This is a good idea, but there aren't that may arcades around these days (at least not where I live).  What about soda or snack machines that take bitcoins?

That would be pretty cool. It would make it pretty handy to spend your Bitcoins anywhere there is a soda or snack machine around. About arcade machines, I know that there hasn't been much attention around it but I think that once BTC machines are made and would offer the ability to earn coins as well, many kids would want to play these. You would be having fun and earning satoshis at the same time.  Roll Eyes

Sure it could be changed to but look how hard it is to change anything bitcoin, I think we are going to have realize Bitcoin isn't going to be the all in one coin solution unless many things change.

Agree. And I might think that the perfect candidate for this type of thing could be Ethereum all along. Since it is a decentralized app platform, such application could be made within the Ethereum blockchain to program any vending machine or arcade cabinet to accept ETH. It would be much faster to confirm an ETH transaction, than having to wait 15 to 30 minutes for BTC to get confirmed at all.  Smiley

You can play the roms for free on your computer hooked to the big screen TV with a joystick and buttons, and you can do it sitting in your lounge chair... for free. No quarters and no BTC required.

That will be so nice. I like arcade machine so much. And I like it to do. And now you can just put your coins in and play.
But it would be nice if you can pay with Bitcoin or something, that will be so nice if that can happen in the future.

I would definitely pay BTC to play back in the arcade machines. I understand the comfort of playing in your own home but it sucks that the real life experience of playing videogames with friends has been lost. Back in the 80's and early 90's it was a social thing, you would meet with friends and play videogames. Now kids are becoming idiots that never leave their bedroom because they have it all there.

Arcade machines need to come back, I wish btc somehow helped in making it real again.

Yup - I agree, the whole thing with the smell of the sea + chips (or 'fries' in the US I guess) and the cold wind that makes your hair go crazy is fantastic.
Looking forward to some warmer weather to go to the seaside for real now.
Though the only thing I would say is we don't get ice cream on our buttons and it's a whole lot warmer. lol!  Wink

As an aside I'm very curious to know why arcade games haven't advanced one bit in twenty years. I still see the same games at the seaside that were there when I was a nipper. I fully assumed they'd be virtual reality miracles by now.
I don't think that they need to get more advanced. The way they are now is perfectly fine to me. Maybe adding virtual reality arcade games would be nice, but they would also cost quite a lot of money for each turn. I doubt that we will be seeing Bitcoin arcade games anywhere in the near future. Using fiat for small transactions like this is way more convenient. Now most arcades just give you a card which you fill with money to play. Maybe one day you could fill that card up with Bitcoin.

There is a site named bitcoinarcade online its kinda like a horse race that you will bet using bitcoins, so when your chosen horse wins you will profit from the game. But dont waste time on those kinds of game its boring.

Anyway, there is a news about bitcoin to be use arcade machines and I found it on CNET news. Heres the link https://www.cnet.com/news/bitcoin-operated-arcade-machine-is-a-game-changer/. Hope this helps you.

I cant understand example if we do have vendo machine which accepts bitcoin as payment how do we pay? sort of physical coin of bitcoin? or something scan a barcode and send money through it? well the point is we can send bitcoin in real life without exchanging it into our own fiat. Arcade with bitcoin is cool idea  Grin

Oh and I thought this thread is dug up for posting reasons. So the one who dig it is related to some bitcoin arcade. Good thinking to avoid double thread. But this might have a higher possibility that moderator might lock this up because the first post is from 2015. You should've just created one. Bitcoin arcade machines are really cool if you will ask me so it could be fun to talk about it.

An arcade machine accepting bitcoin? It is absolutely awesome! I will definitely play on this if it will be available Cheesy I hope that there will be more machines like vendo machine which accepts bitcoin. I will make our life easier Wink

Yes, it will be something out of this world. I think that it will be the very first arcade machine that would accept Bitcoin, once implemented into arcade sites. It may bring Bitcoin closer to mainstream adoption, however some issues need to be address before Bitcoin can be considered as a means for quick payments within the arcade machine. At current network load, you would be waiting 30 minutes or more for your transaction to confirm, to be able to play a game in the arcade. That is why it may be ideal to do it with an altcoin like Litecoin, in the meantime, until Bitcoin's scalable solutions like SegWit gets approved.

Nevertheless, when Bitcoin becomes accepted into arcade machines, it will open up a path for it to become closer towards mainstream adoption and usage. Especially, children would be using Bitcoin to play games in the arcade, or even earn satoshis from the games played if possible. Just sharing my thoughts.  Smiley

i am sure that if bitcoin is available in every places, we can play arcade machine and make payment with bitcoin but i think until the time is come, for now we can only play with fiat. but it is a good idea to see in future if this is really happen so we can play the arcade like the old time.

Agree. Anything can happen, once Bitcoin becomes used in the mainstream world, making out a decentralized economy free from government, and banks intervention. People can buy, and sell stuff with Bitcoin in any place from: department stores, grocery stores, and much more.

Arcade machines would probably become a big hit, once they accept Bitcoin, since almost anyone in the world can acquire the digital currency, not to mention that it doesn't require identity verification, and has lower fees in contrast to banks and credit cards.

However, for Bitcoin to become very useful at some point, it would need to implement scalable solutions to help make its transactions faster than what they are right now. Just sharing my thoughts.  Grin

That would be pretty cool, but there are many reasons no one would make such an arcade that accepts Bitcoins. On the other side, I think that there are some machines that accept Bitcoins so you can buy tokens for the arcade games, but it is not the same thing. It would work if Bitcoin had some kind of physical form or something.

First time I've seen something like this, pretty cool! The technology behind it isn't too hard to recreate though, but licensing games might be the real pain in the ass. (Imagine an arcade machine with like 100 games to choose from ^^)

Now, if only someone could commercialize something like this, we could have these all over the world Smiley
They might not be the best profit makers, but certain hobbyists would certainly want to place these somewhere..

And that I only one problem, in my country arcades were popular back in the day, but now you are lucky to find one, so while this is and interesting thing to do the market for it keeps getting smaller since now most people have a computer where they can play games, a mobile phone or their own console.

That is certainly true. While anyone nowadays, can play classic games within almost any device, it lacks the experience of doing so within an arcade machine. I believe that arcade machines are a lot more fun, as they provide a unique gaming experience with the use of their joystick controls and coin slot to continue playing. Bitcoin arcade machines in the end, might become even more popular than ordinary ones, if they manage to pay players a few satoshis by playing any game of their choice. The games would have ads of course, to help support this.

Nevertheless, while it is a crazy idea, it wouldn't be surprising to see at least one to become a reality someday. Just my opinion.  Smiley

If you are considering using your bitcoins for fun maybe an arcade bitcoin is a good idea. But i dont even consider spending bitcoin on games because it is worst than gambling. Because you will just throw away your bitcoin on the things we no exchange . I suggest that if theres gonna be an arcade it may be a business purpose just like in cafe so you can also earn. And for faster transaction and payment.

I guess you're right mate. If a Bitcoin arcade would become a reality, then it would be such where you could earn coins, instead of spending them. Since Bitcoin has slower confirmation times than many of the altcoins around, then it might not be very ideal for use at arcades. But if it gains acceptance from one of the proposed scalable solutions, then I believe that transaction confirmation time would become reduced, leaving room of this to become a reality.

Nevertheless, if a coin where to be chosen for this task, then I believe that something like Ether or a custom token within the Ethereum blockchain, would make the trick. Ethereum's transaction confirmation time is much faster than Bitcoin, making it the ideal choice for an arcade establishment. There is also Dash with its InstantX transactions, which could also serve for this purpose. Just sharing my thoughts.  Grin
