bitcoin is much like paypal for payment transfer but the fee's are ALOT smaller and not regulated/controlled by one company.

21 words i think  Grin

Inspired by the above post from the thread entitled What is Bitcoin? (In 21 words), I offer up the following challenge.

I will pay BTC1 to the person whom best my 14 word submission on a Tee depicted in the image below the rules.

  • Must contain 14 words or less, explaining Bitcoin to the masses in a concise way.
  • Must be grammatically correct.
  • Must be written in E-Prime.
  • Must be presented as an image of a Tee (or similar) with the wording legible (no funky font).
  • The use of a Bitcoin symbol is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Based on at least 10 different members submitting at least one design (multiple submissions allowed).
  • Feel free to even improve upon my submission.
  • Time frame will be 7 days.
  • Judging will be solely by me, but will give considerable weight to comments on quality submissions.

Hopefully, there'll be no need to modify the rules above, but I reserve the right to amend them. Fear not, for I've proven to be über fair.

Rather than trying to explain it, why not go for brand awareness and have something simple like:

Your idea is in the slogan/motto range, while we're trying to explain what is Bitcoin to the masses in as few words as possible.

That would be the E-Prime rule. I could modify it to meet that rule but it'd be half as witty. Why is E-Prime important here? Would be good if this could be discussed...

Oh and possibly because if Bitcoin counts as a word itself we're up to 15 - not sure if that's it?

This fuckin' thread has now turned into a job, one of which I don't get paid, but have to pay out.  Wink

But I'm up to the task nonetheless. Allow me now time to address the posts since the last time I was here.

To make my task a tad simpler, I'll add the the ones to Post #2 meeting the criteria, and comment on the ones falling short as well as answer any questions.

Damn close, but you broke one of the rules. Can you figure out which one? (not being an ass toward you, bud) I like it, but can't add, for I would surely be called out for adding a submission incorporating an infringement.

Oh and possibly because if Bitcoin counts as a word itself we're up to 15 - not sure if that's it?

I'm just hooked on E-Prime: Some scholars advocate using E-Prime as a device to clarify thinking and strengthen writing. For example, the sentence "the film was good" could translate into E-Prime as "I liked the film" or as "the film made me laugh". The E-Prime versions communicate the speaker's experience rather than judgment, making it harder for the writer or reader to confuse opinion with fact.

I'm including the above image, although it borders on being a slogan.

Also including this one, although structured as a sentence would have been more acceptable.

I'll give it another try:

Included for now, but PayPal is one word and not Pay pals. Redo, so I can change the pic in Post #2.

Entry outside the competition and a bit more provocative

I like this, but there's that word 'is' again. I'm going to do a mock-up based on this and submit in your name.

A separate post is warranted for this submission.

Did you steal this from somewhere? I love this shirt, but it's more of a slogan/motto. I'm going to include it in Post #2 of this thread nontheless. The only major thing I would like to see changed is the Bitcoin logo. Some logo with the word Bitcoin incorporated in it would be great in my eyes.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My suggestions: worldwide to global; anonymous to pseudo-anonymous (will consider it one word); somehow emphasize without banks (all caps, comma, hyphen, etc., and still make the text clean looking making sure to not put a hyphen in an eyesore position, for example)

I'm not a season wordsmith, and any help from the community would be appreciated.

Bitcoin means evolution
and freedom.
A global, pseudo-anonymous
and carefree
transaction system
without banks.

I also like the logo. Your choice for using the word 'means' to replace 'is' is interesting. I really like it, but if even a better word could be used, hopefully somebody will suggest it.

All in all, a very fine submission.

~Bruno K~

Another option:

Bitcoin represents evolution
and freedom:
A global, pseudo-anonymous
money transfer system.

WITHOUT BANKS!

Now I'm having issues with the word 'evolution'. I'm not trying to tear this apart. In fact, I'm trying to improve upon it, for it's coming across so strong.

You like this one better? so i can make the picture in case you find it better:

Bitcoin, the evolution way to freedom.
A global and carefree transaction system.
WITHOUT BANKS.

or maybe adding the (r) too.

Bitcoin, the (r)evolution way to freedom.
A global and carefree transaction system.
WITHOUT BANKS.

shorter and nice too:

Bitcoin, the evolution towards freedom.
Global carefree transaction currency,
WITHOUT BANKS.

Included for now, but PayPal is one word and not Pay pals. Redo, so I can change the pic in Post #2.

This was actually intentional - a word play on PayPal suggesting you can pay friends (pay a pal) and businesses rather than using the brand PayPal (or any other similar payment provider). If it wins (which is unlikely) I'm happy to turn it into PayPal if that is more to the point and less confusing.

I like this, but there's that word 'is' again. I'm going to do a mock-up based on this and submit in your name.

Thanks, this is a mock version of the mastercard slogan which uses "there is" - that's why, but your E-Prime version works fine. Thanks making and including it.

The play on words IS a nice aspect of your design. Sorry that I overlooked it.

Regardless of which one is used, you'll hold title to all the variants on the same theme, including mine and others' input on this submission. That said, personally I'm leaning toward the following:

Bitcoin, the (r)evolution/ary
path to freedom,
delivering a global
secure payment system.

WITHOUT BANKS

Not yet, luicon. Allow me to run this another week, for I desire to see at least two more entries. See Post #2 of this thread to view all the submissions.

Feel free to submit any entries with slightly more than 14 words, albeit they may be given less consideration. The key is grammar and the ability to express what is Bitcoin in as few words as possible.

its quite difficult to define bitcoin with very little amount of words
in my opinion if its something that its going to be
in a t-shirt, should be something that inspire to the one who read it, into know more about it,
i dont know if trying to put lot of adjectives on it to define it better could be as positive as intended,
here is another try any way:

Because YOU should be your own bank.
-BITCOIN-
Secure carefree transactions that
returns back your freedom.

or

Because banks were never needed:

Is the Ƀ symbol official? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B_with_stroke

Quote
B with stroke (majuscule: Ƀ, minuscule: ƀ) is a letter of the Latin alphabet, formed from B with the addition of a bar, which can be through either the ascender or the bowl. It is used as a phonetic symbol to represent to transcribe the sound [β].

⟨Ƀ⟩ is also a letter of the alphabets of the Jarai and Katu languages of Vietnam, and is used in standardized texts in Old Saxon as well as in reconstructed forms of Proto-Germanic

The letter Ƀ has also been used as part of a proposed alternative symbol for the Bitcoin digital currency [1]

I'd say all submissions so far suck. Some ideas are good, but wording isn't. Particularly, when you combine several ideas you get hodgepodge instead of a coherent sentence. It reads like "Freedom, and, uh, evolution, eh, fuck banks and paypal! LOL".

"currency evolved" is probably the best catchphrase, but it a little too unspecific, other digital currencies can make that claim to.

If somebody finds a way to elaborate from there it would be great.

Also I'd say Rush Limbaugh said it very well: "Oh, the hell with that. Why don't we just use Bitcoin, to hell with printing up a whole new platinum coin here. Just use Bitcoin, which is the currency on the Internet."

He was probably mocking Bitcoin, but still, "the currency on the Internet" sounds great. A little more verbose than "currency evolved", but considerably more specific and has relevant connotations.

Also, fuck E-Prime requirement. If you suck at wording E-Prime won't make it any better.

A couple of thoughts: People would not want to read a long sentence on a T-shirt. A couple of words might grab their attention, but if one needs to read like 10 words to understand what it is about it's just kinda useless.

A bullet list might work if individual items are catchy. But it doesn't look good on a T-shirt.

However!, there might be a way to make such list visually appealing.

For example, use arrows, like this: http://imgur.com/pNZey (This isn't a submission, I'm just demonstrating an idea.)

It is supposed to mean that a combination of desires (like desire for freedom from banking system) and technical innovations lead to evolution of currency which is represented by Bitcoin. Visual design like arrows can convey logic flow and structure, while words simply describe concepts involved.

It's possible to use different layout, like mind map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map
Can be hierarchical.

Perhaps it makes sense to separate desires from tech traits. Like:

freedom from the banking system {and other things} => Bitcoin => peer to peer payments on internet

This one is truly awesome. This metaphor captures pretty much all traits of bitcoin (perhaps, in a subtle way) except limited coinage. But perhaps even that is hinted by gold hue of the logo, although it's a bit too subtle, I guess.

Love it. On the back I might want something like:
BTC an idea too big to fail.

Not really. Paper money is more-or-less anonymous and decentralized, and so is Bitcoin.

Centralized services cannot offer anonymity of that kind. They are more like an internetsy version of electronic money, but NOT paper money replacement.

Not really anything that gets the onlookers attention tbh or make them want to look up BTC.

Yep maybe it is a bit too subtle, but on the other hand comparing Bitcoin to PayPal is just distasteful IMHO.

How About:

Global Currency
    Without Banks

Yeah, I thought that too, but went with "Worldwide Money" as I thought it sounded a bit more down-to-earth. "Global Currency" sounds like a global-government thing IMHO - at a time when distrust of banks and international organisations is pretty low, I figured it was best to avoid things that sounded like them.

Also people see "currency" as something other than what they can spend right now. Which is kind of true-ish here, but no point in putting people off unnecessarily Smiley "Money" feels more practical.

Having said all that, I'll knock up a "Global currency" one some time soon, if people like it.

I'm not seeking a bounty, but wanted to try something I came up with before I read this thread, because I'm generalizing a process that I see happening in the forums.

Bitcoin records pseudonymous payments into a permanent non-corruptible public ledger for free.

I suppose a shirt with that on it might be a bit embarrassing to wear except to an engineering or other nerd-type convention.  That sentence is now in the public domain.

authority should be in quotes imo because if they are actually authority than ignoring them would be stupid. Do you ignore your doctors advise? Now change the scenario slightly, what if your doctor was actually a pizza delivery boy disguised as a doctor, now would you ignore his advise? This is why we ignore the state, not because we reject the notion of authority, but rather because they are really not authority at all. Thus the quotation marks.

other than that 1 minor detail, i really like this submission.

I love how you totally ignore the meaning implied in the governments' official usage of the word "authority".  It's a bit dangerous, though perhaps here in the forums the danger is quite small.

Maybe you don't run into problems talking to people IRL about authority, but if you do, (and maybe this would be better on the shirt), use "fake authority".  They'll likely ask what you mean, and you can explain the difference between being forced at gunpoint to pretend you believe someone and actually believing them because they've done the mental work required to know what they're talking about.  "Just following orders" is an excellent omen of fake authority.

i'm pretty sure that the bounty was already given out, but i like things like this and noticed nobody had yet made this suggestion. however, i also figured that maybe there would be bitcoiners out there looking to make cool t-shirts, and this name might catch on...if so, then i'd probably buy the shirt if i saw it offered...also, hoping maybe someone would throw the newbie a BTC Smiley

I honestly deserve the above. I totally spaced off this project. My bad! Psy was kind enough to remind a few minutes ago of this via a PM.

Allow me to address this first thing when I get back in, for I'm expecting a client within shortly and don't want to start penning, then have to stop.

Okay, I'm back. Seeing that I started this bounty on Dec. 21, 2012, I will be paying it at that day's exchange rate. Surely, nobody expects me to buy at today's higher rate.

Now that that's taken care of, since I've received so many submissions, it'll be nearly impossible for me to view them all at one sitting. Therefore, a few days to look at them all will be needed.

Thank you for playing.

I may have to agree with you there.

Damn, I wish I hadn't neglected this bounty! Nice post.

No! I'm into goats, and the life of me I can't figure out what psy's into, though it too is probably not human.

I really like psy's entry below, but borders too much on a slogan/motto than a complete sentence of sorts. I had to exclude it in the running to be fair to the entries abiding as closely as possible to the rules I set. Sorry, psy.

Same true for the following. Very nice submission, though.

Consider it a package deal. Besides, that's psy's favorite.  Grin

Since I can't decide between the final three candidates, I'm conducting a poll: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=153179.0

I won't be able to review the results till tomorrow, for I had recused myself from voting.

deepceleron(3.) is the winner and will recieve 1 BTC, with luicon(1.) and jsmithers(2.) will each receiver .105 BTC. I guess I could have broken it down to a .11/10 split, but don't think they'll mind this arrangement.

1. luicon
2. jsmithers
3. deepceleron

It looks like jsmithers has not logged on since January, but will PM him nonetheless.

Thank you again, all, for participating. And nobody tell psy that this was rigged for him not to win.  Wink

Phinnaeus, you're not really changing the 1 btc into "whatever 1 btc was worth when I posted the contest" are you?  Because that is one of the main reasons a lot of people are using bitcoin instead of fiat.

I like to provide some work at no charge to prove my valueAvoid supporting terrorism!

Sure am! See post #1 where I penned I have the right to amend the rules of this bounty, therefore I had to exercise that right due to the sudden increase of the exchange rate. Besides, psy said that it would be okay if I did such. I PM'ed theymos three times to ask him, but have learned he has a new girlfriend to replace the one stolen from him by a fellow Bitcoiner, thus utilizing up all his free time.

I was going to link the thread where he states that he's leaving Bitcoin, but I'm currently having a problem finding it. Something about college exams if you care to search for the thread.

Jon didn't want me to do it, but Bad_Bear convinced him otherwise, concurring with psy. But it all worked out, cause I'm a fair guy and the winner got $.32 more than if I did it back then. Not much, but every bit counts.

I just sent deepceleron his winners after receiving a PM from him, and I'm sure those extra cents will tickle him pink.

Sorry you didn't win, but thanks for playing. Look forward to you participating in my contest.

PS: If anybody says unkind things about this arrangement, I WILL LOCK THIS THREAD.

SCAMMER

Aahahaha, made my day!

Just paid jsmithers, now all are paid, so please remove all scammer tags--or not!

Thanks for playing, all.
