The point of Rubies was to create a widely accepted and used coin by businesses as an alternate to Bitcoin. As a large business in the bitcoin industry we felt initial distribution to thousands of people registered to our site would be a great way to help distribute Rubies to a crowd that already were comfortable with digital currencies. At one point 6 sites were using it so in that regard it is a success.

After numerous attempts to gain traction and have it traded on larger exchanges the answer was always the same "this is associated with many casinos, we cannot legally list it in our country" and some exchanges wanted unrealistic amounts of bitcoin to 'maybe' list it with no guarantee.
