Both of them are good to be done and both of them can be done with the amount OP has, he can trade altcoins from a half to make it more with the time and store the other half in wallet so that he can sell them when the price goes high.

Diversify your btc into various investments. try to invest in upcoming ICOs such as DECENT, SINGULAR and ICONOMI. i guess iconomi ICO is live. Then, maybe lend some in poloniex or to some trusted high ranking users in bitcointalk.

Maybe you can go for trading, even though it's risky. Trade without what you afford to loose and study the market trend before you trade. All the best dude!

Investing in altcoins is the worst advice someone can give to a newbie. When I was introduced to bitcoin, I learned in the hard way by investing in almost every other ICO.
Op, I would suggest look into some gambling casino which accepts investments.

I wouldn't say that investing in altcoins is the worst advice because there are some coins that have a very low price at ICO and then their value keeps increasing after that time.

What will you do by simply holing them? Suppose price goes to $1k in future it will take you to $12k for 12 btc but if you grow it in trading and atleast you reach to 20 btc then you will be earning $20k.

I will give you best advice and you can pay me fees  just kidding, you should diversify those 12 btc, invest some in trading, hold some for future and if satisfied with price then sell some of them and convert it to fiat.

You got nearly 7k$. I would buy gold with %20, bitcoin with %10, apple shares with %20 and rest is in FIAT. Buy %5 more when one of them loses %5 value. Sell %5 when they go up %5. Repeat as many times as you can.
