Burst is aiming to be the first truly global, energy efficient, fair and decentralized cryptocurrency.

Efficient HDD mining

In a Proof-of-Work system, the network is secured by performing an insane amount of computations per second in order to validate each block. That is the reason why you have to use powerful hardware like graphic cards, processors or application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to mine. This leads to downsides like high electricity consumption, heat and noise, the need for specialized, non-reusable hardware, and centralization of the mining process by big corporations.

Burst solves all these problems by allowing HDD mining: miners secure the network with their disk space. You can see it as a “condensed Proof-of-Work” - you compute once (a process called plotting) and cache the results of your work on hard disk space. Then mining only requires to read through your cache. This is a 2-step process:

- Plotting: it is the process through which miners pre-generate on their HDD chunks of data called «plots», containing all the computations necessary to forge blocks. Plotting is a long and energy consuming process that is done through your CPU or GPU, but it only has to be done once. Then your plot files are stored on the HDD and ready to be used to mine Burst.
- Mining: once plots are generated and stored on a drive, the miner only has to launch his mining software. It will read through his plots in order to come up with an amount of time (called the “deadline“) necessary to forge the current block. Once the deadline is submitted, the HDD becomes idle until the next block appears. Your HDD stays idle most of the time and reads through the plot files only for a few seconds for each block. The best deadline submitted among all miners is the one forging and establishing the duration of the block.

ASIC resistance

An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is a kind of integrated circuit that is specially built for a specific application or purpose. Compared to a programmable logic device or a standard logic integrated circuit, an ASIC can improve speed because it is specifically designed to do one thing – like mining a cryptocurrency – and it does this one thing well. The very high prices of ASICs make it unfair for the average small miner and are against the decentralized approach of cryptocurrencies, allowing only big mining farms to thrive.

Burst’s Proof of Capacity is based on Proof of Work, so from a theoretical point of view one could compute the Proofs in real time. However, it is not possible to require enough work to be done during a 4 minute time frame that even the most cost efficient ASIC cannot mine efficiently enough to make it cheaper to use than a hard drive. ASICs calculation speeds are rising, but so do HDD sizes.

In a white paper titled The Burst Dymaxion released on December 27th 2017, the PoC Consortium developers introduced an innovative concept to the world. The Dymaxion is a tangle-based lightning network – it implements layers to the Burst network in the form of payment channels. The uniqueness of the Dymaxion concept lies in the fact that each of these payment channels is opened in the form of standalone colored tangles, on top of the Burst blockchain that runs on the Proof-of-Capacity protocol.

Each single of the tangle-based lightning networks distributes “transactional stress” among its own network of participating nodes, allowing for arbitrary scalability. The more nodes participate, the higher the transactional capacity of each of the current active networks becomes – every new user making transactions is increasing the total transactional capacity of the network.

With the Dymaxion, Burst becomes a truly global transaction system, with groundbreaking features:

- Scalable: Every tangle-based payment channel opened on top of the Burst blockchain is scalable. The more nodes participate with transactions, the higher the transactional capacity of each of the current active networks becomes.

- Energy efficient: As the payment channels are opened on top of the Burst blockchain, the Proof-of-Capacity consensus protocol remains the backbone of the network. It is much more energy efficient than PoW, and fairer than PoS.

- Anonymous: When opening a payment channel, the issuer can choose a few parameters, including transactional anonymity. Users can then perform transactions using ring signatures or zk-SNARKs - they won't be identifiables.

@yellowduck2 Working title in the lab was "The New Burstcoin" - but it is more like a new chapter of a very very thick book. Smiley

Userbase is growing exponentially these days and some of them are joining working on the code. Thanks for your support so long! An active community is even more important than updates updates updates.

Cheers to BURST and the great dev-team!
I think we should really concentrat  a little bit more on promotion and advertising, and i dont mean some little stuff once in a while posting a videos and some tweets...
Im talking some serious campaign, tons of twitter activity, reposting, liking, using some real promotional Team with offical accounts, airdops on bitcointalkforum and twitter and so on,
serious signature campaign here in the forum to spread some fomo, and better and active advertising/ trolling on polo for example...
i guess also some new graphics and improved logos and stuff could help

get the word out!  Wink

I've to agree. You do these amazing things over and over again, and sure, the price has gone up, but with a coordinated promotional effort, I think we could do way better. Twitter says I reach +30,000 ppl a month, but that's kinda tiny compared to all the press that ETH etc. gets on all the news sites.

Don't worry, there is plenty in store, we're having meetings to discuss the future, but I think you will all be pleasantly surprised by what starts to emerge from BURST.

I really might say, now is the time to BUY. But this is just my opinion. Wink

Due to the rapid expansion of miners for Burst, we've setup a third and fourth pool, and will be seeing up a fifth one shortly. The new pools are:

http://pool.burstcoin.biz
http://pool.burstcoin.eu

The two new pools currently have the same deadline acceptance parameters as pool.burst-team.us, so are suitable for miners small or large. This may change in the future to make individual pools more aligned with particular sizes of miners.

We're asking that you consider moving between the pools to help balance the load across the pools - too much capacity on one pool causes problems for everyone.

As with my earlier announcement, some miners may receive double/triple payouts - moving pools will not affect this payout, and for those that asked - yes the payments are coming out of my wallet.

Also, as per the earlier announcement, teething issues are possible, but I'll guarantee to cover any missed payments due to issues.

H.
