I just spent the last hour reading the entire thread from back in 2008:
http://www.mail-archive.com/cryptography@metzdowd.com/msg09975.html

This guy Hal seemed to have an instinct as to the potential of the idea and he was just drilling at Satoshi's brain constantly...what an amazing, insightful read that was. It's like watching an idea materialize right before your eyes Wink

I also found some insight into who Satoshi was. His English is impeccable. We seems westernized. He uses a lot of western idioms that hint to a middle-aged westerner. My guess is that Satoshi, even if of Japanese ancestry didn't grow up in Japan.

Exciting times Smiley

Thank you Hal for everything you have done for both this community and the world. No one knew what would become of the Bitcoin and we still don't know. It's a grand experiment. I hope that I can live up to the example you have set for all of us. And I hope that the Bitcoin outlives us all.

Thanks for sharing, interesting read indeed. Seems like Satoshi worked for almost two years on the concept before releasing it to the world.

Just come across your post through a link from another discussion.

Reading these type of stories makes me feel like i've stumbled across an undiscovered Egyptian Tomb, or something like that.

You have definitely have a legacy, and I hope your children and grandchildren value your input into this world changing technology.

Hal, I've been trying to preserve the history of Bitcoin (especially the early days). Is there anything you'd like us to archive for future bitcoiners?

Just a few men can hope to leave their mark here on earth, doing what they love whilst making the world a better place.
You've achieved more than most men, secured a place in the history books of the future, rightfully proud of your heritage.

Thanks for writing to us Hal, must have been quite hard with the eyetracking device, might sound funny to you but I do envy you, I wish I was there in the early days of Bitcoin to help Satoshi fix bugs  Cheesy

Thanks for sharing this, Hal. I'm no coder/cryptopunk, yet I still find this inspirational. There is something about human spirit that makes raw stories universally motivating -- thank you.

I would be interested, and would find value, in knowing the identity of one person who Hal Finney felt most closely shared his own vision for the future of the internet as it relates to empowerment firstly, and to distributed crypto-currency solutions as a important but secondary consideration.

If provided I will factor it into my decisions about who to pay particular attention to in the future.
