What is the best, proven AMD Crimson driver version to use for mining ETC/XMR/ZEC?  I see that 16.12.1 has been out a few weeks and 16.12.2 out just about a week, but are these recommended yet or would a more proven 16.11 be better for mining?

 ANY Relive (16.12.x) version to date has been very poor for mining - they don't get along with modded BIOS at all, and they impact hashrates NEGATIVELY by 5-10% in my testing on them.

 I recommend 16.10.1 (most recent WQHL version that isn't Relive), but 16.9.2 also worked well in my testing, and I suspect any 16.9 16.10 or 16.11 version will have competative results.

 15.12 is still a viable "go-to" version for pre-RX series cards but I've not found there to be any difference between that version and 16.10.1 on hashrates for my various R9 2xx and HD7xxx series cards.
 Definitely worth going to 16.10.1 if you ever plan to upgrade from older cards to the RX 4xxx series.

the evga  that was a real P.I.T.A.  with 3 bios changes needed but it works with an m2 ssd and four cards

Here is something to share, and hope it will save you time and effort...

Before this all the GPU rigs are on ZEC, ETH and XMR, spread across Nanos, 390s and 480s.

During the full swing to XMR, 3 rigs started to act up and I think its riser and driver related....

During ZEC, ETH mining -- the rigs are very solid and stable, good drivers and optimised speed, basically running well to my satisfaction.... but its suddenly not stable on XMR (working well before)

Instead of trying to meddle with Windows and Crimson drivers to make it work - I decided to use the magic sub stick which have saved me countless of midnight oil sessions before.

If you have not heard of simplemining.net before, suggest you visit his page.

My farm is all Windows due to learning curve on Linux and also poor AMD driver support in Ubuntu, etc.

OK back to the usb solution, burn an image on a usb stick (prefer on usb3 for speed) from simplemining.net. Choose your image; RX (amdpro driver) or Non-RX (fglrx driver).

It will self update to latest version and start mining as per your miner app of choice in the master web console.

This fix got all 3 rigs to mine to Dwarf using Wolf XMR Linux miner which is very stable. You can also use Claymore but its using outdated v9.1 Linux build.

Anyways, this saved me a lot of time.... indicating that if it didnt work in the first place... and working now with Linux.... then the culprit can only be Windows... not the riser.

RX480, Win10 on XMR v9.6 -- use Crimson 16.11.3 or 4 to stabilise the rig.

Claymore need to improve the Polaris support for v9.6 miner

After the ROM mod, trying to attempt any finetuning in AB 4.2 or 4.3 will crash the rig or become unstable.

For 480 case, messing with wattman is no picnic too and I could only get 33% reduction in -mV.

But using the ROM mod as it is, can already achieve 29MHs, low power - just under 1000w for 6xGPUs and considerably less heat.

Putting this same rig but under Linux (ethOS or SM), kill-o-watt show 730w for the same rig.

Both systems if mining ETH with Claymore 7.4 Windows or Linux achieve same 29MHs per GPU.

Without ROM mod, and just -100mV or -96mV with AB, with 6xGPUs, just under 1200watts in Windows.

Did not try Linux at that time because I havent tried ethOS or SM or meddling with AMD drivers in Ubuntu was just too complicated for me.

Until this guy called Heliox got his Nanos modded and shared with members....

Yes, all my Nanos are also modded with Heliox rom mods but I could manage only the -100mV version in which was already a saving in power but could have done more.

My only GPUs that are not modded and yet the best performer currently are the MSI 390s - solid like a rock, finetuned with AB4.2 -96mV and OCed slightly, delivering 30MHs per GPU in ETH. Solid in XMR and ZEC too.

The only downside are 390s are power hoggers and all 5 rigs (5xGPU x 5 rigs) uses 1600w EVGA-G2s which cost me a fortune.

Thats why I am never going back that alley and stick to the 4-GPU Biostar Z170 gold standard like Phils for future builds.... unless Panda Miner becomes a reality.

What is SM Linux? Not using Boysie's, using Jukebox's bios. I would *love* to use Linux (it's what i'm most comfortable with) but the power saving from using Windows means at this point I don't have much choice unless I can somehow figure out how to do -100 mV drop for each GPU.
