Thanks everyone for the shared info, tools and shared straps. I've settled on using one of nerdralph's and I've gained nearly 1mh/s per card, 28.6~ to 29.6~ using 1125/2050 clocks.
gpu? which memory

Curiously has anyone had issues with sending their cards in for RMA after modifying the straps? Do manufacturers have issues with this?

Just flash back to stock BIOS before you send it.
Can anyone tell me if there are any specific models of 470 4GB cards that are guaranteed to have Samsung mem? Thought I read somewhere that all MSI Armors that have an 8-pin PEG connector do and any recent Sapphire Nitro OCs. Not sure if that info is accurate though or if there are any other models. I'm hoping to maybe offload my Hawaii cards and get some 470s. Gonna have a 2nd rig soon with an 850W PSU and I'd love to be able to run 3 or 4 cards in it (I can't even run 3 Hawaiis without being at or above max output).

4Gs are all good, keep an eye on 8Gs...some of them come with micron memory...

So every single model of 470 4GB is guaranteed to have Samsung memory?

It's a lottery, I have Gigabyte 470 4 GB with Hynix, and my friend bought his 4 cards in the same shop a week after me, and got 1 with Samsung, 2 with Hynix and 1 Elpida. My 480 Nitro OC 4 GB version has Samsungs, but Nitro+ (with a plus) has Elpida.

I may have read someone say that powercolor 470 4gb red dragon has always had samsung. I have 2 of them (single fan) and they both have samsung

If you bought cards with the same exact code you can know the memory they have Nitro+ or without + or nor is not sufficient to distinguish memories

gpu? which memory 4 different variants of RX480, but all are 8GB cards with Samsung RAM and perform identically with the same clock speeds.

FWIW, I've noticed all my MSI's with samsung memory have mandarin (or hanja, i dont know) on PLU/SKU label, and a asian support sticker on outside of box, along with a sticker on back of GPU with mandarin/hanja on it. My Hynix have none of this.

Sounds right to me! You can even experiment with the 1625 strap if you want with hynix, it seems like it has the potential to get like 0.5mhs more if you can clock the mem high enough

I have been watching this thread with anticipation of jumping into the RX480 world. Last week tried to order a bunch of MSI RX480 X Gaming 8GB. Both Jet and B&H Photo said were in stock. Just got an email from both saying manufacturer shortage. They each cancelled the order. Sounds to me like Vega release might be imminent. Sorry, I know it's off topic, sort of.

In case you didn't see my PM, how high are you clocking your mem with that strap? EDIT: for those interested he said 2025
