Just out of curiosity, how would you do that swap from Bitcoin to Gold without it being a taxable event?
Was just looking into it as a like-kind exchange (IRS section 1031). Doesn't look very promising. Vaultoro. Maybe Bitgold/Goldmoney too.

"Diversification is key to any long term sucessful wealth"

I wouldn't have given him that advise 5 years ago. Only when when ONE MAIN investment (which is also of high risk) reaches to a point in which it would be somewhat lifechanging if it failed entirely. Otherwise, not that much need to diversify. Everyone's portfolio is different. For example, I am still diversifying INTO Bitcoin. And yes, sometimes you need to exchange potential profits for lower risks/safety to protect your wealth in the long term. I was warned to diversify back in 2010 by old system investors. “Diversification is protection against ignorance. It makes little sense if you know what you are doing.” -Warren Buffett

And I am not even sure what situation you are now, apart of some very slight idea from your own comments. But if I had most my eggs in a high risk (cryptocurrencies are) investment I would diversify at least SOME of it. It's funny Warren Buffet said that when he is, and has always been, one the persons with a most well diversified wealth in the world (You just have to look how many and how wide diversity of assets Berkshire owns). And not everybody is Warren Buffet... Heck, not even Warren Buffet would be THAT Warren Buffet without a bit of luck on its side.

I'm gonna play the devils advocate here and say, if you are young, are smart and do your research, and have a good career (and thus money to invest), then diversification is a terrible idea.
Here's why.
When you're still young (in your 20's), you still have you're whole life ahead of you to invest. So it's smarter to do the research, and focus on some higher risk/reward investments earlier on. If you try and fail, you're still young and have more time to start again.
If you divest too much when your young, then you'll just lose out on big potential gains early on that compound later. Sure you'll eventually retire with a nice safe $500k, or maybe $1-2M, but that'll take you 30-40 yrs to get there. And it won't be enough. If you focus on higher risk earlier on and diversify when you get older, then you'll realize maybe 2x-4x gains over that amount.
It's a different ballgame when you get older. You no longer have the benefit of time (or $$$, as your expenses have increased and likely your relative income has decreased) so you have to play it much safer moving forward.
Either that, or if you are starting over at an older age with next to nothing saved, have to take BIG risks to make up for lost time. Sadly many have to try and do that today. #YOLO

Yes, but age matters too. The 20 yr old with $1000 invested will likely end up retiring with MORE $$$ than the 40-50 yr old who invests $100k.

Not really. It's mostly about percentages and relativity. What would you say about a guy such as loaded that has 40.000BTC in one Bitcoin addresses that he haven't even touched in years? Should he sell or not? All or part of it? If he is already well diversified (in fact he invested in Bitcoin after being already "rich") he can take the risk and go on for the great profits. If he would give you all that 40.000BTC... you would better start diversifying INMEDIATELY. Got my point?

You're right, bitcoin is not a currency. It's a payment network.
I'd call it a "distributed truth ledger".
