I must have missed the boat on this one... You're kind of missing the point. You can also use a credit card at newegg, which for the vast majority of consumers would be easier and more convenient than using bitcoin. Can't use a credit card to buy drugs, though.

Nothing to add... Another example of a shoddily-written article on bitcoin by the mainstream media. - The article seems to imply that Mt Gox went bankrupt because its owner, Jason Karpeles, could not mine enough bitcoin to pay off his loans. wtf?? - The article points out that bitcoin is good for mainstream uses, being accepted by places like Amazon and CVS, and bad for buying drugs, because of its traceability. These things are true, but it makes one wonder whether the author couldn't remember whether he was writing a pro-bitcoin or an anti-bitcoin article. - If the author were actually trying to delve into why anyone would use bitcoin for non-drug related purposes (e.g. on Amazon), he would have pointed out that you can get 3% cash back if you go through gyft, more than enough to cover the spread (you lose 1 to 1.5 % on the spread when you purchase bitcoin from coinbase at the same time that you purchase the amazon gift card). EDIT: Plus you don't have to worry about your credit card info getting stolen from Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Home Depot, Starbucks, or any of the other places accepted by gyft.

Squareup.com turns every drug dealers iPhone into a credit card processing machine. I was just reading an article about how apps like that are allowing drug dealers, bookies, etc. take CC payments.

Way to get famous: 1. Be a criminal who uses Bitcoin 2. Go to university and enroll in sociology program 3. Write a Thesis on the influence of criminals on the development of society (good or bad) 4. Profit and world wide attention Damn I wish I was younger.

Popped back in for a quick look. USD borrowing costs at all time low and long interest has collapsed to 15 million dollars US. Shorts just under 25k - sky high in BTC terms. Selling tame by BTC standards and a few walls on finex trying to box the price in.
Wouldn't be surprised to see us at 160 or 230 tomorrow. But I will just hold now. Price remains in a great zone for aggressive accumulation here in my view. Timing the absolute bottom is difficult. If BTC isn't doomed then buying coins for these cheap prices is low risk.
Things are looking ever more ripe for a short squeeze. But as ever the thin market is at the whims of those with strong liquidity to boss it around.

Allow me to rephrase: using or accepting credit cards to buy drugs would probably be a very dumb idea.
