I'm fine with investing more, like 2x or 3x.

But some of the pie-in-the-sky ideas I hear here require spending 100x or 1000x more. Is it possible?

Even worse, some daydreamers don't even think about the costs. Or even laws of physics.

They think the 'magic of technology' plus 'magic of positive thinking" can solve absolutely everything. And soon.

One issue is that space has been not only politically unpopular for spending money on (something I nominally agree with as a libertarian) but also heavily controlled and regulated by the government for private companies (something that I don't agree with). The latter has somewhat been relaxed recently but not by much. We went to the moon for political reasons which meant we used technology that wasn't ready then dropped it when those political reasons were no longer present. If it had been for financial reasons, we'd have waited a few years for better tech and probably have moon bases by now or maybe not. Satellites have been financially viable and now there are 2,666 operational satellites of which 1,646 are commercial (data from April 2020).

I'm with the other guy who thinks we should be grounded in reality for now. Space elevators are fun and all, but we could still cover a lot of surface area on the planet, maybe even in the oceans, for plenty of solar panels / arrays to power the world (or a bitcoin miner.)

So it's not updated, but you can line up a whole bunch of solar panels near the equator and not much is needed to power the world (not including bitcoin miners) ...

That is a nice photo of symbolism to a video I was just going to watch as I hadn't have time to in the last week since I found it on youtube shuffle.
Bitcoin price keeps some people infront of their monitors watching the action take place but just like that, you got to keep active because you know idle hands is the devils workbench.
Or something like that.

Youtube had temporarily removed it about a month ago due to it crossing one of their conditions restrictions but then put it back up.

You need a counterweight to stop it all coming down to earth 

yup, geosync orbit is the midpoint of the elevator. well, more or less. as you say it needs a counterweight further out so it doesnt need to be the actual midpoint. one can go with no real dedicated counterweight, just make the cable twice as long and use the mass of the cable itself thats past geosync as the counterweight.

i believe you can sling stuff off the far end too if its just cable past the geosync point. iirc.

but you know this of course, this is for those who havent looked into it.

Exactly space elevators are a great concept but not possible with the current materials.

There is another way to get you to geostat in 30min without using rocket fuel but it's pretty insane but doable.

Indeed. The value of gold is largely supported by speculation and those who want a hedge. As soon as any concrete measure in the direction of asteroid mining occurred, the price would surely drop like a rock.

you can guess again ... touched 50k (50010) and we go back down again ... the third time this day! And continue until someone put so many money into, that we wet up to 52k ... (look the 4h cahrt) ... but it seems weaker ... last times(!) we went straint down under 49k (48,5k) ... now not yet...

One of the big things right now is the minerals required for high efficiency generators, solar panels and batteries for storing it all. Mining space would be a good way to handle that over some of the ethically questionable methods currently used.
