Hi WOers.
Just got a new Android phone, and thinking of installing a wallet app for petty cash. I've never done anything with Lightning, but would like to get into it, so I'm looking for a non-custodial Android app than can do both on-chain and LN transactions.
My priorities are as follows:
Stability Security Open-source (if possible) Appearance/UI <-- this is important, my OCD won't allow a crappy UI.
Having used Proton's email services, I'm eyeing their Proton Wallet app, but I don't think it can do LN. I've heard of Wallet of Satoshi, Muun, Blue, based on posts here in WO.
Which one would you recommend? I don't mind a one-off payment if it's a good app.
Thanks.
I still find one of the most interesting wallets out there currently to be Aqua. This is Samson Mow's company. https://aquawallet.io/Good interface. Unique coin strategy. Non custodial. A little complicated under the hood, but super, super simple to use. I have used it in the past two days to send both 75 bucks and 5,000 dollars over the lightning network very simply. Small payments are going to have Crazy little fees. I think it was about 90 sats for the $75 transaction. I did have to pay about five bucks for the $5,000 transaction. But I gain privacy because it goes through liquid and lightning. And it just works... to run a lightning node to send that much you would have to do a lot of work. So the caveats are you are basically storing almost everything as liquid Bitcoin Which I think is quite clever and smart, but some people might object to. But you can store layer one Bitcoin the wallet treats it like cold storage. And you hold the keys to everything on this, so even if the wallet went away you could still get to all this stuff. The other thing is it does have a bunch of liquids, assets like tether, USD and other things. And which some people might appreciate, it certainly is good for people in the third world. But it junks it up a little in my opinion and I don't really use that, but some people might. For a custodial lightning wallet that can also handle on-chain transactions, I think wallet of Satoshi is still the king if you're outside of the U.S. And they've announced recently that they're going to do a non-custodial version for the U.S. and the rest of the world. So I read sparrow was removing its privacy features after the samurai guys got busted but now that they have been released did it change course on that? I haven't updated the wallet since the rollback of features but would like to update it or go to a new wallet soon. I figure your the guy to ask as I seem to see alot of conflicting info ot there and to be honest I just don't have the energy to do my own research these days. *Been listening to Sabbath non stop since I posted that Hand of Doom link, I forgot how Unbelievably awesome Masters of Reality is and am hooked again!

Yeah, the whirlpool stuff is gone out of Sparrow. They were actually using Samurai's Whirlpool server, so when it was seized, it quit working anyway, and then Craig Raw, I think, removed the code that connected to that, so it's just not in the software anymore. And I would doubt that older versions of Sparrow would be able to do anything even though the menu items are probably still there. It won't be able to connect to those servers. And I don't know if Ashigaru has spun up any tor-based whirlpool servers or anything. I don't know. I actually never really did any coin joins, mainly because I was always worried that I would end up with something that though not technically tainted would show signs of having been mixed and then could be problematic in the future. I have no idea if there's any merit to that line of thought or not, but I just never did it. There are still the other privacy aspects that Sparrow includes, like the Paynym implementation. And you can still do the simulated two-person coin-join-looking transactions that are not using a third party server, but do things that are confusing with UTXOs that kind of throw heuristics into fits. I don't think it's super ironclad privacy, but combined with other things can certainly help. I do think Sparrow is still the ultimate power user, Swiss Army Knife, bitcoin wallet.

My thought on this is if you never do it but one day need to then it will stick out like a sore thumb.

My thought on this is if you never do it but one day need to then it will stick out like a sore thumb. Yeah, I've thought about that too. It's kind of a catch-22, isn't it? I don't know what the better way to go is and now that the most respected coin join is down... I also was weirded out by other things, the fact that samourai uses your xpub or did, and then there's wasabi, and that whole feud, and then accusing each other of being spooks, but I wasabi still going, which is weird, isn't it? Also, I found this thing that might go into more detail. I haven't listened to it yet. https://app.podcastguru.io/podcast/1565412491

If you check my old comments on the samurai/wasabi thing I laid that out pretty clearly back then.

Nearly time for full send - We are all getting girlfriends. @CryptoJelleNLThere we go, local support reclaimed. Funding rates negative across the board. Looks like another successful shakeout - send it higher. https://x.com/cryptojellenl/status/1931243286712254809

Black Sabbath is great...Hand of Doom is complex, but amazing. ...sometimes I also like to listen to some rapid tempo "simple" stuff like "Paranoid", especially when they were young: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qanF-91aJo

I've been using Wallet of Satoshi, thanks to a good friend that showed me how well it works (and sent me a welcome transaction for good measure). It does work well. Fast, easy. No advanced features (multisig, multi-out txs) etc., but it feels good. Oh, it's custodial. I'm using it for pocket money.

Too many girlfriends already. But I will take the rocket when it goes... I am not usually the "they are suppressing the market" type paranoid. But I think this has been held down as long as it can be. RSI on the daily looks decent... I think we have a good base to jump from.
