The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

So those are 4.5 GH/s USB powered Jalapenos that people ordered, or are they baited and switched to some other inferior product?

Haha I knew something like this was coming. I mentioned the goalpost shifting in another thread. "It's a scam because there's no ASICs" has become "It's a scam because they missed their power targets".

Are the people who bought singles and little singes going to have wait forever?

Nice way to downplay the bait-and-switch scam. They weren't just "targets". They were "honest abe", guaranteed, power levels. They didn't ship what they guaranteed they would ship. Classic Bait And Switch SCAM.

The thing is that the original 4.5GHs unit has become 5GHs (5.3GHS actually)  and nobody gives a rats (except the critics) that it pulls 30watts. Some people care that the case is bigger, I like the cube shape myself, reminds me of the Borg.

BFL is the least of my worries, I'm more worried about ASICMINER.

Anyways, that's why I did the whole group buy thing... less risk on my side.

If the Avalons don't make any money, I lose 7 BTC... big whoop.

Nice try tho  Tongue

You've been a hater from day 1, I wouldn't expect you to change your tone:

this is crazy. people cant give their money/btc fast enough to this guy... this has epic fail written all over it. i really hope your batch 3 shipments arrive well before bfl's 'product'

tldr; btc NEVER goes down in price, avalon batch 3 will ship long before bfl, pep's have more dollars than cents.

gl coinhorder, hope to never have to see that scammer tag under your handle...

don't you mean BFL customers are going to get slaughtered by avalon batch 1, batch 2, and ASIC miner?

6 out of 33000 Grin We should get a post going "my Order# is" and "I received on date" to estimate their manufacturing throughput. I think it would be most scientific method since they really can't commit to any concrete estimates.

Here is the currently estimated timeline, and while this is subject to change of course, it's pretty solid at this time. Completed items are crossed off:

Week of January 13th
Travel to packaging facility for final prep and walkthrough - Complete
Confirm travel plans and trip details with lead ASIC engineer for trip to fab - Complete

Week of January 20th
Final assembly facility prep - In progress

Week of January 26th
Leave for fab/bumping facility at the end of the week
KC facility starts assembly process of units to drop PCB into Units being prepped!

Week of February 3rd
Final chips roll off the line
Arrive at Bumping facility
Chips Bumped
Arrive California for Packaging (May spill into following week)
Chips packaged

Week of February 10th
Packaged chips sent to assembly house
Assembled PCB is set for final testing and MCU programming
Notify users to start sending their FPGA units or BTC for trade in participants
Bulk assembled PCBs arrive in KC, we start dropping PCBs into waiting units
Boxing/labeling for shipment
We implement the 1/3 shipping plan en mass
1/3 of our assembled units will go to new orders in FIFO
1/3 of our assembled units will go to upgrade orders
1/3 will be randomly selected from both groups

We descend upon the Post Office like horde of angry locust. DHL, UPS and FedEx send trucks.

Quote
Indeed, you can be sure it won't be happening again if I have anything to say about it.  The ship dates were announced before I came on board with BFL and going forward, unless I am explicitly overridden, we will not be making any shipping date commitments.  It will be Valve time from here on out if I have my way.

Looks like the PO is going to be overwhelmed by the swarm of locust.

You left out the most important component: the Jalapeno is 6 months late. You could have mined 50 BTC in that time with 5GH/s.

Have you not heard the expression "better late than never"

A friend of mine bought a one bedroom apartment as an investment "off the plan" ie. when it was still a vacant block. He forked out hundreds of thousands of dollars sight unseen, the builders used the money to build the apparent block as expected, projected timelines were missed, it took years, but eventually it was completed, so he was happy. He could have argued that he missed out on rent for all that period it was being built. This is a pretty normal situation when you pre-order something that hasn't been built yet.

It will be Valve time from here on out if I have my way.

Funny but Valve time is not exactly a positive indicator:

Valve Time: The expanded time Valve uses when talking about anything that will involve them working. Like a new york minute, but in reverse. The conversion factor is approximately 2-6 times whatever the stated interval is.

So its official take whatever time was announced and multiply it by 2 to 6 times.  Grin

Hang on, minirig is doesn't exist yet, last announced was case redesign for a single, then the is the big single then the minirig. I would guess minirig prototype is 4-6 months away, so by then it could be $1million dollars!

Yep. It is indeed better than never.

He could have argued that he missed out on rent for all that period it was being built. This is a pretty normal situation when you pre-order something that hasn't been built yet.

If he was going to rent out the apartment, then he did indeed miss out quite a lot of money. Years of revenue lost.
I hope your friend doesn't get ripped off like that again.

I bought a house, off the plan, when it was still a vacant block of land.  It was built and completed 2 months ahead of schedule.

Your friend who bought an apartment off the plan reminds me of my friend who signed up years ago to build a block of apartments through a spruiking/high pressure sales company.  They were offering to pay my friend 20% interest on money they borrowed from him and to give him a discount on an apartment.  I asked 'why doesn't the builder just go to a bank and get money much cheaper?'  *crickets*  My friend has remained very silent about the deal ever since.  I suspect the whole project fell over and my friend lost all his money.

That's the risk one takes when preordering a product that doesn't exist yet.  Heck, if BFL fell over before my order was shipped there is nothing I can do about it.  PayPal doesn't care, BFL is in a different country and just filing papers in US courts would cost more than my order ever did.

They shipped 6 units of an bait-and-switch inferior product, 6 months late, that is at least 10 times weaker than other products that have already made it to market.

The only people who will even potentially make their money back will be the first people to receive these devices.

Typically what happens in the case of an apparentness block, the developers don't get sales as fast as they predicted, to be assured of the funds to start the project, so they wait for more sales until they have enough to feel comfortable to proceed. This is common across all sorts of industries, not just dwellings. If you have a contract that includes performance clauses then you might have some recourse for compensation, however I don't see anything like that for pre-ordering bits of electronics.

No risk, no reward.

Smoothie, why are you being so cruel to BFL customers? Was everyone screaming bloody murder that BFL was going to be 7 months late on their delivery when they were accepting BTC preorders? Everyone putting any money into any mining venture is taking a risk. Sometimes those risks don't reap rewards.

disclaimer: i haven't put any BTC into any of my mining-related activities, except maybe some stuff from cablesaurus.

Sending money to a company 5 months in advance with no due diligence (research into the feasibility of BFL being able to deliver devices like 1.5TH/s in the size of the mini rig case) is something a retarded person would do.

Most people that bought BFL preorders in June 2012 threw money at BFL without question the same day the announcement went out about their supposed products and specs.

So no, this wasn't tough to see that this "investment" was fucking stupid.

 Cheesy
If you pay attention to the BFL order numbers and dates people have quoted in these forums, you would have seen that most people actually ordered between Feb and April, not the time period you claim.

Sorry, I think the demand to see thermal imaging is a little much.  More finished product videos coming from known pre-orders would be best.

BFL needs to learn the definition of shipped.

I'll give them a hint... it doesn't mean having products on a cart in their office, or running a unit for Luke-Jr from a work bench in their office either.

Status shipped, yea right  Grin

Where is that hundreds of units assembled per day happening if the cart has only few units to be shipped (propably to the devs etc). I would like to meet a person who is placing an order at BFL after these "shipping confirmations", it must be very easy to make him/her to believe in random rumours.

One of the first Avalon customers to get his unit posted about 20 thermal image pics. I guess that is a lot to ask from BFL's user base though.

No ones said it because they haven't ever shipped empty boxes? Its the shipping and missing deadlines and targets thats the problem. Lot of people keep forgetting that BFL has already sold fpgas to people.

A cart in BFL HQ, with empty boxes... just as the boxes at the bottom.

I see boxes with shipping labels. But people will see what they see. they also did say they have some on the way to devs and the devs seem to know that so 1+1 may just =2.  Of course trollfest will continue until they start shipping customer stuff(and probably farrrrr after)

Actually i believe at least one person has already received their demo unit.  THere is a thread with the unboxing on it.

I am pretty sure they will try to move more jally's out the door this week or next - but i think that is the only model they will be shipping at the moment due to technical difficulties.

I wish i had ordered at least 2 or 3 of them in addition to the singles - but hindsight is 20/20 and i knew it would likely be this way with BFL.

The whole ASIC adventure (?) has been very entertaining to watch on the forums..

Monday 4/22 shipped 4 Jalapenos. 1 Customer and 3 developer units.

Tuesday 4/23 3 more to ship today to customers.

As we get ramped up here I won't be telling you how many we ship each day--just what day the orders were made that we are shipping. Right now I just want you to know the magnitude of the number of units so you can see we are not blowing these products out the door in great numbers. That will come later.

lol, I just looked at the german translation (http://www.butterflylabs.com/de), they even translated their company name.
Quote
Schmetterling Labs stellt eine Reihe von High-Speed-Verschlüsselung Prozessoren für den Einsatz in bitcoin mining, Forschung, Telekommunikation und Security-Anwendungen.

Also a newsletter gets a "Mitteilungsblatt", LOL. Every german website calls a newsletter "newsletter".. They obv. used google translate or something like that.

Hey BFL, I'm a native german and I can do all the translations for you if you want for a couple of BTC. Cheesy

Twitter says 31 more shipped

I read this:

Code:
BFL_Josh (Shoutbox) - 11 packed today, but I think they missed the ship cutoff time going out, so they'll go out (...)

tomorrow with another ~10 or so.... so a total of 20 tomorrow.

So it seems they manage to ship 10-20 units a day. Not exactly the 400 per day that Josh predicted, but hey, it's Bunch of Failing Losers. What could you expect?  Wink

I hope those guys that ordered in 2013 bring a lot of patience, because it might be 2014 when they finally hold their Jalapenos in hands.

Nice "Butterfly Labs" logo on the boxes. It will make it easy for thieves to pick out the money machines.

Josh said they would ship in "neutral" brown boxes with no logos. Oh well, another one of Josh's bogus messages ...

I'm looking forward to the next couple of months for the forum to be full of messages like this: "help!!!!!!!!!! my BFL shipment got lost!!!!!!!!!!!".

This is very concerning. Post men are smart, this is just silly. Even Apple knows not to ship its products like this. Come on BFL.

Yes, that too.

I mean big companies, like Intel, spend a lot of time for stability- and long-term tests. BFL barely managed to get a prototype running. And now they started to ship those prototypes.

By your logic, video cards should be in plain brown packaging too, as they are also money machines.

The merit to plain packaging, is that it protects the original box. eg. wrap it in brown paper.

I'm 390xx, 50GH/s, April 10. I would have thought there'd be more orders between us. Rumour has it that a lot (~50%) of orders end up unpaid (i.e, buyer's remorse), so there could be fewer than 3,000 orders between us.

If they have taken that many orders, then I would expect BFL to outsource the assembly to some contracted high volume specialists, and dispatch to some fulfilment house.

lol

Too funny that BFL cares about some payment processor's demands while totally ignoring FTC prompt delivery regulations.

"NP, we'll just package up a few of these half baked frankenboxes and call them Jalapeno v0.5s! That'll get those annoying fools at fleabay off our backs while we continue looting people with our pyramid bait and switch scam!"

EDIT: In the comments section, quotes from BFL_Jody:

Quote
Because we have not shipped for such a long time PayPal is requiring us to ship a small number of the orders made through them and send them the tracking numbers.

Quote
It's not because of chargebacks. The customers are not triggering this. It's to give PayPal themselves peace of mind

Holy crap this company is a disaster. The only thing they ever seem concerned about is the supply of incoming funds. Roll Eyes

This is good news (I appreciate it was designed as such) for a ASIC mining wannabe like me.
Perhaps I will not have to write-off my BFL pre-order after all.
At least they have a working product, not yet up to their initial expectations but, it is a working product.
I have no more idea of an expected delivery date, just a little more convinced that there will be be one at some stage.

It's because of people like you that BFL isn't belly up yet.

You do realize that "at some stage" might be too late to even make your investment back? In August there will be an ASIC flood - if you receive your device after that, well, good luck then, but you'll be fucked.

Of course I realise that "at some stage" may be too late, but I'm not going to be 'fucked' because its money I can 'write off' if needed, it was a gamble when I pre-ordered, and there is no point in taking a gamble if you can't deal with losing.
No one is arguing, BFL have royally screwed up, mis-management, poor decisions no doubt, but I doubt it was wilful, its very easy to be a smart arse after the event.

The point of my post was for anyone who is still waiting on a pre-order from BFL, this is good news, there were rumours that BFL were a complete scam and they had no intention of ever delivering an ASIC device, everything was smoke and mirrors and they were just stringing everyone along until they did a runner. Well this looks less likely now.

It is always a gamble, no matter what anyone says. It is not like there is a store shelf to take a unit from. I liken it to trading at gox with 30min lag, maybe you make a good trade or maybe you are fucked.

I have to say that my window of opportunity is closing fast and when it does I will reassess, get a refund or pass the risk onto someone else. There really isn't anything else to say on the matter.

[/end all BFL threads]

EDIT: By the way I will NEVER use a preorder again, the company should take the risk as in the real world.

It's really no different than the Avalon pre-orders going on right now in this forum. It's just another kickstarter style method of capital raising ro cover the development and initial production costs. If you are scared of pre-ordering  then make sure you use Paypal or some other method that can reverse transactions if necessary. Do not pay in BTC or cash.

Nope. Stockholm Syndrome would be if the person would still LOVE BFL for it.

If I get my ASIC in December, im gonna write it off too. but im gonna be pissed as hell and never ever buy anything from them ever again, spread the word and so on. If i get it in october, im gonna jump around a bit and not be happy, but id say "shit happens."

When I ordered in July, I was aware of the negative sentiment towards pre orders and "the BFL experience" with the original BFL Singles.
I prepared myself that this would be similar - it was.
They are now delivering. Slowly. Just Like Before.  Smiley

No need for insults.

After August it will be hard for every ASIC to be profitable. Whether it's a Jalapeno, a Single SC or a Mini Rig. And I doubt that the majority of BFL customers will have their miners by then.

It's about twice the size of the original single, and it has two fans inside, at opposite ends.

New single case

That's a fancy box of fans they've got there.

In all seriousness, I think it's just a box of fans. There isn't even a power brick plugged into it.

If there aren't push/pull fan configuration in that new case - .....

I'm just going to hope BFL did the obvious.  BFL is good at dashing hopes, though.

At least you'll be able to connect them in series.

Note the external cooling fan.

Yea right, troll away, it's about the same size as a Core 2 duo and it's heatsink/fan, which runs at 65watts all day. So the Jalapeno at 30watts is going to be a lot easier to cool.

Not when they stick it in a closed case with minimal ventilation.

You mean the "closed case" with the airflow slots across the bottom and the fan that's as bit as a 65watt core 2 duo fan, maybe bigger?

Avalon employees are not ashamed to identify themselves as such.
I wonder why the BFL employees are afraid to?

I wanted to answer this so badly with a pic of a three letter acronym, but instead found the following more appropriate image while searching for NDA:

We all know that BFL will ship all of their 5GH's miners before any major movement of the larger miners, otherwise if they didn't they would be delivering 5GH/s miners that would be worthless do to the difficulty rise made by the larger miners they shipped at the same time.

I think once all the 5GH miners get shipped, then they with move onto the 25 GH/s miners mainly and work from there up, otherwise it makes no business sense.

Shipping Jalepeno orders from November and still shipping first day Single orders makes no sense to me.

Nobody would of ordered a Single if they knew Jalepeno's were gonna go first.

Hardly anyone speaks English on this forum.

Think of all the people who upgraded their Jalapenos to Singles. They upgraded with the promise that their order wouldn't be delayed.
