On the other hand, one of these alternative currencies will become the future bitcoin...
Seems to me with the bitcoin cap some alt coins will be needed to provide more liquidity to the market litecoin seems very stable now... but not all will make it in the long run

Ah don't we all wish?
If you follow Mt. Gox's twitter, it looks like as soon as they announced the possibility LTC shot up a few hundred percent. Someone made some serious money!
I've been using Vircurex for my alt-coins - love them. Their GUI could use some improvement but they've been good to me.

They all are behind the bitcoin. No place accepting the others for payment as normal stores are starting to accept bitcoin first. Who knows, when bitcoin is widely addapted the the rest might follow the same path too. But for now ltc is second, the rest comes after.

Almost all of the alt-coins are there are going to be a waste of time. They're being created to take advantage of people who get super excited about different things and then get pumped and dumped.
Be careful about wasting time with too many alt coins.
I bet thats the kind of thinking many had about Bitcoins in the beginning but look where it is now. I am not bashing you in anyway, I just feel like qualifying your statement. People should really research what their going into because maybe one of the Alt-coins will have a boom like BTC. Agreed. Many alt-coins out there have great potential and some-not all will hit it off big. Nope.

Yeah, maybe the next coin will be more ASIC and/or GPU resistant so that more people will be able to mine it easily. If it's well designed, has fast transactions, and supporters get a lot of services to accept payment with it, then it could be a success.

I list a number of coins on a site I set up last week - www.WhereToMine.com ... I give a list of which coins would be most profitable for your hash rate. It's a constant work in progress, so let me know if you would like to see anything added to the site. Hope you find it helpful!

The whole altcoins thing is interesting, but I wonder how many of them are just people annoyed that they didn't get in early enough with btc? Anybody got a chronology of when different altcoins came online?

This is the best resource for that as far as I know. https://github.com/ppcoin/ppcoin/wiki/History-of-cryptocurrency
