Not clear why a lot of alt-coins exist other than as trading vehicles (think arbitrage opportunities). There is a huge mining race for BTC. It seems like the alt-coins do not have the same level of race. All the new HW is for BTC only and so perhaps there are still opportunities for GPU mining of alt-coins. You could then exchange into BTC of course. But unless commerce directly accepts anything other than BTC the alt's will have limited use. I've heard some people talk about LTC as silver to BTC's gold, but not sure if that analogy works since we no longer even have a gold standard for currency. Besides, the metals have other uses, e.g. jewelry, electronics, etc.

Incredible how LTC has exploded.
Any guess which altcoin could be next? PPC?
I would say PPC and Megacoin. I agree with PPC, I also think XPM will be interesting to watch, depending on what uses the primes have.

I would say PPC and Megacoin. I can understand PPC as it brings something different to the table from what I've been reading, but why do you think Megacoin? It seems like it is somewhat of a Litecoin clone like many of the other altcoins.

Is there any software (preferrably for mac), that can accept wallets of any kind? It's frustrating that you have to have a wallet software for each and every altcoin separately.
I think electrum might introduce a litecoin wallet some time in the future so it's a first step for a wallet with multiple coin support. If they do, that will be amazing, but you'd need to be careful not to send BTC when you meant to send LTC. Litecoin addresses start with an L so the built in spell check will kick in anyway.

I don't know if yoy guys know this but it seems a some of you dont. The reason Litecoin exploded like that was beacause was somenone was pumping it. People are manipulating the prices to earn a profit. The funny thing with Altcoins is that they seam to stay at the new pumped up level. I feel like Litecoin should be wort something like 50 USD since its the second one that came out. In other words, expect sudden explosions in value on altcoins.

Zerocoin is easily the most interesting altcoin, even though it can't yet be mined. The prospect of anonymity was one of the things that got me interested in Bitcoin, and upon hearing that it was pseudonymous at best, I (and I imagine several people here) were disappointed.
I'm also interested in Namecoin due to its properties of being a decentralized, distributed DNS, and Primecoin due to its proof-of-work being used to look for chains of prime numbers.

I also think NMC will be a big riser because of the DNS and its so often mined with btc so has the network for stable use

Just like there is room for different physical currencies, there is space for several cryptos with different and unique attributes.

Hi everybody. I'm a newB to this forum, and crypto currency in general. I feel like I hopped in at a decent time, when bitcoin was a mere $200! I bought 1/2 bitcoin for $100. Been effin around and now I have around $1000 in crypto-currency. It's been a good week. But, I figure if you're a Texas hold em newB and every hand is 5 aces, it's hard to lose. I made plenty of newB mistakes, and I'm sure I'll make more, but hopefully I can always improve my game plan. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it. Buy low sell high, hold onto the winners! CGB FTW!

Lots of pumping for FTC, TRC and PPC on BTC-E. Not sure if any of those are worth it. But the prices of all the altcoins is likely to rise in the short term because of the hype around BTC. Probably any other altcoin which can reduce our reliance on a central authority will have some future. NMC is the only one that comes to mind right now. Could replace DNS, SSL. Not big on any of the other bitclones.

I doubled my investment in FTC already. But I don't know how long it'll last. Not investing a significant amount for a long term.
