With Proof of Work, the probability of mining a block depends on the work done by the miner (e.g. CPU/GPU cycles spent checking hashes). With Proof of Stake, the resource that's compared is the amount of Bitcoin a miner holds - someone holding 1% of the Bitcoin can mine 1% of the "Proof of Stake blocks"

Actually I've been studying what they're trying to do and it looks pretty impressive to me. Atomic swaps potentially through Lightning Network  off-chain, that's really cool. But you're right, given that I get free coins just for holding bitcoin, I'd be happy if it becomes a cheaper bitcoin and gains value let's say of bitcoin cash, without any features at all...
