Looking to power (4) rigs in my basement.  Each one pulls about 1100 watts.  Already have ATX power supplies that will take 240v or 120v.  Was trying to figure out how to get enough 15 or 20 amp 120v circuits.  But, I think going 240v is the answer.

I read through this writeup - thanks philipma1957
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2192299.msg22020934#msg22020934

I would buy / install:

30a 240v circuit with L6-30R plug
PDU rated for 30 amps
appropriate power cords

I think I have just enough space on my service panel to do this.  Don't have room for more than two new breakers.

Is this a good plan?

Anyone know where I can find a decent PDU in stock?

As I looked around tonight these things seem almost as hard to source as GPUs.

Doesn't have to be new or fancy, although having one with a meter might be helpful.

30amp derate to 24 amp

https://www.ebay.com/p/HP-E-04500-Series-PDU-Control-Unit-228481-001/1128925207?

extension bars

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-2-252638-001-HP-100-240V-12A-8-Outlet-Modular-PDU-Extension-Bar/282281082272?

monoprice   cables

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24192

buy    6

cost 49 + 23 + 24 under 100

up to 6 rigs  at 825 watts each

6 x 825 = 4950 watts

Thanks Phil, you da man!

I only have 4 rigs, not 6.  So can I skip the extension bars and plug each rig's power supply into one of the 4 ports on the PDU?

Edit: wait a minute.  I'm thinking 240v, the first eBay link the pic of the devices says 120v.  I need 4 x 1100 watts or 4400 watts.  Was thinking 30a at 240v for 7700 watts derated by 80% to 5760 watts.

you are correct I saw the 24amp  which is 80% derate of 30 amp and I missed the 120 volts

give me 5 minutes for proper link

these are 30 amp derate to 24 amp
240 volts I think

What are the advantages of using a PDU for 4 rigs over 2 double wall outlets? Is it all about power quality?

My electrician is booked in to install two double wall outlets wired to two 20A breakers with 20A cable inbetween. Each socket is rated at 10A.
We use 240V in Australia, so 4800W per breaker, 80% is 3840W. That's 1920W per socket.

Why should I consider investing in a PDU? (or two)

Thanks guys for the replies to my ONDA B250 question. Today I already received tracking number and expected delivery for the motherboards is on Monday. These are moving fast.
I am building my first (mining) rig and have more questions. I am posting them here because I am trying to follow Philip's suggestions from page 1.
Actually it's my Amazon "shopping cart" and would like to ask you if everything looks fine and I didn't miss anything:

1) I will initially order 4 1080TI, atm nothing in stock. I've read that I should take the 3 fan version for better cooling. The cards will be max 5cm wide.
2) using ONDA B250 from Sidonia. I will use the PCIEx slots only.
3) 1xRAM for 2 boards https://www.amazon.de/Gskill-F4-2400C16D-16GRS-Memory-2400-Ripjaws/dp/B017UC3VOM
4) 1xCPU https://www.amazon.de/Intel-i5-7400T-Prozessoren-lga1151-64-Bit/dp/B01MZ9GJ1N
5) 1xSSD https://www.amazon.de/Samsung-MZ-7PC128D-EU-interne-6-0Gbps/dp/B005OK6VTA/
6) 1xPSU https://www.amazon.de/Corsair-CP-9020008-EU-Platinum-1200Watt-Netzteil/dp/B008O0ZKMQ

Will the Corsair AX1200i have all the cables for 4x1080TIs? Will I need some extension cables for power?
Have I missed anything?

The AX1200i is a bit of a pain in the ass with regards to cabling. It comes with two double headers and four single headers. While this is 8 PCIE total, it uses up six of that PSU's 8-pin sockets, when it could be 4. Not a problem for a 1080ti rig, but a real pain for 1070/ti rigs.

PS: EVGA SC BLACK is my favorite 1080ti - low heat, high hash, low power and a very small footprint.

Thanks, I see EVGA SC at 800 euros and FTW3 900 euros. Is it worth adding 100 euro for the 3 fan model?

All my Colorful mobos have Colorful markings with serial number

is this the one with K17 (without CPU) and K35 variant (with CPU) ?

Colorful is  totally different from K17
Colorful have 8x 6 pin at the GPU side , 3 fan headers , single ram slot , 8 pin CPU in with special out cable from board , Sata power out on board with special cable.
K17 have 6x 6 pin at the CPU from , 6 fan headers , no CPU in , or out or sata out .
Also colorful board have larger GPU spacing
My K17 died and killed 8 RX570 GPUs + Msata HD after running 8 GPUs for few minuets  , on the other hand the Colorful been running for like two weeks now .
My colorful doenst have any colorful markings and no serial number .

 Nope.
Unless you are going to push the card for max hashrate, in the 200+ TDP range, you won't see any significant difference other than the SC might run a degree or 2 warmer.

PDUs are useful when you CAN'T change your wiring and outlets (most apartment situations), and in some cases might be a lower-cost option to calling in an electrician to rewire your place when that IS an option.

I replaced that with http://www.corsair.com/en-us/force-series-ls-120gb-sata-3-6gb-s-ssd-b because the Samsung one was not new.
I finally pressed the checkout button and made the order. Ordered all the above plus added a preorder for 4 x evga 1080ti SC. Order was accepted but I wasn't charged yet, hope they will accept the credit card Smiley
Thank you all for the replies.

Crap. I have had a K17 based rig running for a week and have a K35 on the bench to be built but now I'm wondering if it's a good idea to use them at all. I'm running 1060s at 65% PL which shouldn't be stressing them too much… Do you know what failed on the mb?

Hey guys sorry I've been so MIA lately T_T been trying to adjust after having my life/schedule flipped around last month (not a pity post, but seriously I miss being more active in this thread)

On a positive note I'm kind of impressed with the numbers the 1050 TI's put out for being old tech on equihash wi/ DSTM miner, these ASUS pulled ~190 sols @ 60 watts

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2724055
my full post on it

Here's the video if any of you guys are interested

Anyone else using 1050 TI's? they are one of the only cards that's actually available lately. . lol

Thanks for the replies guys and
thanks for the info about the ONDA board, but the shipping and VAT most likely
kills that idea unless she writes a low value for the customs.

And I already went ahead and bought four pci-e risers.

I was thinking about getting this mb, which lets me to expand up to 6 GPU's if needed.
ASUS PRIME H270-PLUS
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRIME-H270-PLUS/

I have five of those boards and they work very well and are good value (at least in my location). You can expand it to 8 GPU using two M.2 to PCIE adapters (these ones are cool because they connect directly to the riser usb)

That said I recently setup my first riserless rig running linux off a usb stick and if you're expanding it might be worth the shipping + vat once you factor in buying a CPU, SSD, risers and time to set it up.

Was looking for this Asus Mobo but newegg is currently sold out... but came accros this MSI H270 that looks very similar in specs. and it's on sale for only $85 after rebate!

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130980

Has anyone used the board for mining and confirm that it can take at least 5 GPUs?  Seems it could probably take up to 8 with M2 adapters but mainly I need to just make sure others have mined at least 5 cards on this board :-)

1050 ti aren't old tech - SAME Pascal generation as the 1060 through 1080ti.

I won't bother with them due to the excessively low rig density, but they look to be a tolerable entry-level mining card for folks on a LOW budget, and they come in "low profile" options for folks with small cases that want to upgrade from older stuff.

On a different subject, I got a ".01" payment from Nicehash today - and noticed they changed their "payment policy" to "irregular" for small payments.
Perhaps they are now going to cluster together the small payments to keep the fees under control?

Spent all day. Trying to find what was dead .

It was not the k17 mobo.

It was not the pdu

It was not the 2400 watt delta.

It was not one of three week old 1080tis

It is either a riser   Or more a rosewill tokamak psu.

Once I determine which of the two i will get back.

Either riser Killed the psuor psu Killed the riser.

That cascaded back to the pdu which cut off one other plug the one that powered the k17

So everything is up  shifted moved etc .  I can not get the psu to work and will return it.

But the riser may have killed the psu causing the issue.  Well at least every gpu works

Yes they paid me 0.076 BTC, 36 hours ago when BTC dropped in price. Nicehash fee was 5% 0.00385 - $57 or so. I assume this includes the bitcoin tx fee.

I need just one more rig to get to a level where I can generate 0.1 BTC in less than 7 days. Payouts over this amount have a lower fee of 3%.

My gear is set up in my unfinished basement, about 28 feet away from the breakers.  It's just where they ended up, near a workbench and where I had some portable shelving.

As I look to add new outlet(s) I was thinking I'd just put it next to the panel for now because it's easier.  I saw someone mention EMI and other interference when you travel some distance, and I'll be pulling about 4400 watts, so it might be nice not to have all that right over my desk (my desk is between the panel and my shelving / workbench.

Is it a good idea to locate your mining rigs and power outlets right next to the breaker panel?
