Out of curiosity, for the veterans here, how much of the difficulty increase has already been absorbed by Z9's at play? Looking at ZEC from nov-now, for instant, one can see a big rise from roughly 5 Feb to 5 March:

https://www.coinwarz.com/difficulty-charts/zcash-difficulty-chart

Prices were tanking during this time, 2x GPU markups were at play, so it seems unlikely a concentrated wave of new GPUs hit the network around now.

If difficulty increase has already been at play, how much more would we expect from new batches?

Similar scenario with eth, it's hovered in 3-3.2 for some time. Yes that is a different animal with Casper etc. but I'm referring specifically to difficulty increases being "baked in" by the pre-launch mining long before these asics are announced--in which case, we are vastly overestimating future asic-related difficulty spikes b/c they have already occurred.

Study the Dash difficulty chart.
From 1.4m to 96m in 100 days: about 1m a day.
38TH to 2626TH:
26TH increase per day (1,500 D3's)

I think Bitmain will play this smarter - hence the mini version and '1 limit per customer'.

There is 750MH of equihash ATM. About half of profits is ZEC. Even if everyone except ZEC forked, all nVidia rigs will be down to 50-60% profits assuming some go to ethash/lyra etc.
1.5 million GPU are on equihash.
1,500 Z9 per day shipped seems like a good number. (15MH) we will be at 1,500MH within 50 days. I don't think they want repeats of D3 coupon debacle.

Looks like the intro of Z9 is going to be complicated soon..... seems that ZEC devs "wont" mind going ASICs.

There are plenty of coin teams already joining together to work on ASIC resistance.

Having Tpruvot as part of the LUX team, is a step towards having the edge in cryptography compared to ASIC devs Cheesy

I suspect, given lead time on ASIC development and deployment, that most of the current "big wave of new algorithm ASIC miners" out of Bitmain is due more to the big price jumps LAST year, coupled with saturation of the market for the S9 leaving them with unused capacity for chips to be made at TSMC allowing them to introduce the new stuff now.
Keep in mind that development of a new chip on the current nodes takes at least 6 and more commonly 8-10 months, from "first design work" to "final chip design is verified and production quantity deliveries start", then add in another month or two to get the actual miner production design verified and production up to speed.

I'm quite certain that Bitmain would LIKE to have had more of these new models in production 6 months sooner, but probably weren't able to do so.

The new Z9 model is going to be somewhat like the L3 when it first showed up - there's enough existing hashrate that it'll take a while for them to make GPU mining unprofitable, not like the D3 where a single batch could more-or-less match all existing hashrate or the X3 where that single batch blew away the existing hashrate.
We're still looking at months to get the GPUs switched out into something else for profitability, or retired entirely.

It's not going to be like the E3 though, since the Z9 actually IS a ton more efficient than existing GPUs.

Yeah, the ZEC devs are looking pretty rotten right now. I've always been put off by their indecent 20% of every block thing, so we don't have any stake in them ourselves. I definitely hope that ZEN and Komodo do something (either algo switch or fork) since those are the two current Equihash coins that I'm fond of.

That is absolutely true about ZEC devs, they are going to get their 20% no matter who is mining it.

ALGO-of- the-month coin   is my new idea.

this new coin switches every month to a new algo.
the developer launches coin with 36 algos ready to drop for 36 months in a row.

Interesting idea philipma. The only problem is if they have a number of ASICs of all algos available. There would be months where GPU mining would be profitable (when there are no ASICs for that algo) and there would be months were it would be not (when there are ASICs for the algo, ex: Equihash, Ethash). Hopefully this can be a take off point for other algo-switching ideas though.

Agreed. Good summary.

The way I see it, the shift will be relatively gentle for both GPU and ASIC.

The only way a bet on z9 fails is if ZEC joins team fork.
The only way NVIDIA miners lose is if no-one is in team fork.

What happens is likely somewhere in the middle. Some fork, some don't. Those that fork vary from fast to slow implementation.

I see a future for both Z9 and NVIDIA miners in 4-6 months.

Right now I'm at 60% capital NVIDIA, 40% VEGA.
Diversity is the key word for home-grown miners ATM.

With that in mind, I'm looking to shift to:
30% NVIDIA, 25% VEGA, 15% Z9 and 30% FPGA.

The energy efficiency of the last two is a huge plus for me as I want to limit power draw to current levels (6,000W).

I have ads up to sell half of NVIDIA rigs.
Paying BTC for z9, as we pay no tax when 'buying' things with crypto in my country (32% tax when turning to fiat).

Paying AUD for FPGA, starting small. Two card rig from a leftover NVIDIA rig.

Exciting times 😀. Hedge your bets IMO!!!!!!!

I'm thinking about moving my rigs outside of the house, most likely into a shed. I'd be housing around 50 GPUs in there with a view to expand the farm.
Average temps outside:
Month High / Low(°C)
January 7° / 2°
February 7° / 2°
March 10° / 3°
April 13° / 4°
May 16° / 7°
June 19° / 10°
July 21° / 12°
August 21° / 12°
September 18° / 10°
October 14° / 7°
November 10° / 4°
December 7° / 2°

What should I get? Metal or wooden shed? Suggestions are much appreciated.

Those are some nice mild temperatures.
Go with wood, the initial cost is cheaper. I also find them to be sturdier. Also if you are thinking the typical metal shed everybody's dad had in the backyard, they are pretty flimsy after a while and separate at the seams. Lots of insects that way.
Whatever you get paint it white; helps to keep things cooler in the summer sun.

Well, these temperatures are averages. It will go up to 27C today. But more often than not, it rains so I was wondering whether wood would be the right choice, don't want it to rot within a few months especially with expensive equipment in there. On a different note, how would you secure it? It's probably a lot easier to break into a shed than my house.

House/shed neither are hard to break into really. A smashed window is all a house takes. Depends on what you do to secure either one. In one of the rougher cities I lived in I actually had 3 different mastercraft padlocks and then for good measure 2 screws through the door to the frame. It was excessive. I'm also guessing that you have a fenced backyard, pretty much a must if you are putting this gear in a shed; just my opinion.

Every wood shed package has the option for siding usually a couple hundred bucks, but even just painting/staining the wood will allow it to last 10+ years easily. What I like about wood is that you can easily cut supply and exhaust ventilation holes where you need to in between studs without affecting the overall structure.

tbdice is a good hunting ground for me since 2016, my first Scrypt miner A2 was regular lucky blocker there and those were the days when a winning block nets you 50 LTC. Whole different ball game now, even 100 or 200 GHs doesnt even make a dent in getting a block - however you never know like my A2 which was only 120Mhs then. If you have 600GHs, which seems to be the sweet-spot in loshia's solo pool, you can hit a block or two everyday. I normally rent at MRR to try my luck in tbdice and solo.ckpool, every month-end.

My current pool for my group's 35 x L3+ is at Prohashing.com, and get in return 4 different coins.

In these times when tech progresses benefiting creation of Asic miners, it will be a matter of time when Asics will eventually rule the cryptoworld.... I like the idea of converging all types of Asics into 1 single pool - and get coin/s of my choice in return - like prohashing.com and MPH.

That way, I don't have to bother in pools/hash/algo/coins/confirmation/ROI BS, and get paid in the selected coins that I want to focus on.

Hello folks,

There is a solid group of people with lots of GPU expertise reading this thread so I figured I'd get a decent set of suggestions for upgrading my current GPU rig (see my sig) from a single MSI R7-370 4GB GPU to at least a new single GPU or maybe a dual GPU setup. The mobo can handle 4 GPUs, but I do not want to use risers, hence the two card limit. I also want to tune the cards to optimize output while keeping the fan volume low enough to carry on a normal conversation or watch the TV that is on the shelf above the mining rig (the TV doubles as the monitor for the rig). This rig is currently powered by an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 which I'd like to keep if possible, but will upgrade if needed.

Combinations that seem interesting to me so far are:

I'm not to averse to AMD GPUs so a pair of Radeon RX 500s or a pair of Radeon Vegas are also options, and I am OK getting another SSD and putting another OS on it, though I would prefer a linux variant over MS Windows.

Also, given the current state of the mining space, what would be a good place to point this miner to maximize my returns? Yeah, I know it's not going a monster rig, but it's what I got.

Thanks a ton,

- zed

IMHO.

If this is more of a hobby to you, go for it.
For anyone that's investing and seeking a return, buying GPU's today seems ridiculous.

With that PSU, I would add two 1070ti and be done. Adding two 1080ti is not ideal.

It is indeed a hobby miner, but that doesn't mean that I don't want the upgrades to pay for themselves eventually. This rig was originally mining eth and produced enough coins before prices/difficulty got crazy so that it has paid for itself many times over.

Regarding the 1070 Ti versus 1080 Ti and the PSU, what is "normal" power draw for an optimized 1080 Ti? 200 Watts? 300 Watts?

No mining at the moment.

... from a single MSI R7-370 4GB GPU to at least a new single GPU or maybe a dual GPU setup.

- zed

200 Watts? 300 Watts?

A hybrid 1080ti using prebuilt waterblock runs quietly

I have ten left and would sell to you at a good price.

You can go as low as 125 watts. Or as high as 250 watts

160 watts gets max sols for watt.  Zec May fork right now equihash pays close to 3 bucks a day at 160 watt setting.

All my hybrids have more then two years on warranty.

Shoot me a pm.  Are you USA based?

1080ti are good if price is right

I paid well under the 929 price for the Evga.

I would pass that to you.

I also have Msi Corsair I paid 800 for . They list for 1000 on Corsair site.

Got them in Jan  I can sell them under 800.
