We don't really need BTC. I hate when I see people trying to convince others to sell everything they have to buy BTC, it's disgusting. I do not think we need btc compulsively right now. Some find out that btc is interested in its technology and that it usually only uses btc for daily payments. Others come to btc to invest and make money from it. Indeed, no one using btc is obligated to do so. I think so. But that is the present, the future may be different.

Bitcoin exists to keep your money (and your financial privacy) away from the eyes and hands of prying people / government. It is an uncensorable form of money.
You may argue that any altcoin satisfies these conditions, but the truth is Bitcoin has the first mover advantage, has the largest number of users and has the largest hashing power backing it.
