Hi,

I cashed out of this mess, and accepted a 87% haircut, so I am no longer following this thread as it only makes my stomach hurt.
However, I did read about this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/11/23/heres-who-probably-did-that-massive-150000000-bitcoin-transaction/ where Sarah Meiklejohn, a computer scientist at the University of California traced a big transaction to what she believes to be a Bitstamp account.

Do you think it would be worth it to involve her in the theft of 4k coins, and have her take a look at it?

It’s probably a longshot, I know …

Certainly worth a shot.  I'd much prefer going after the thief directly than going after TradeFortress in a lawsuit, given how the price of bitcoins increasing, I'd be surprised if he'd ever be able to pay it all back even if he's making a lot of money in fiat, unless there's a massive crash in the value.

Due to the nature of bitcoin I would say the coins are gone and no amount of armchair investigating will get them back.

Most likely, that's the case.  Can't hurt to try though.

Edited to add: I'll be happy to contact Sarah myself and take ownership of this.  Does anyone know the bitcoin transaction id of the transaction where the bitcoins were stolen?

And why didn't you tell us this earlier? Even if they were bad news, instead of just keeping us waiting.

About how much liquidity do you have right now? Enough to pay a percentage of all of the CL account holders' balances?

If your talking about TradeFortress I can provide you several that are owned by him and in use.

Here is one with 379 bitcoins in it.

I've had enough of this silence from TF and with the increasing price of BTC legal action is becoming more of an option.

I'm in Australia but on the west coast; has anyone in the eastern states looked at or already started legal action?  What sort of cost are we looking at?  What are our chances?
If you have no working knowledge about this as it relates to Australian law, please refrain from posting about what you 'reckon' will happen.

That would be my guess!!!

Looks like CL Deposits were in excess of 10000. This hack has already been generously offset by haircuts. Its starting to look like we have truly been scammed.

Here's what Sarah had to say:

"Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find out much.  If you follow the stolen bitcoins from the initial 1EMztW address to the main 1Cdc4GY address, you can see a lot of smaller peels coming off this bigger amount to other addresses.  If you go look at those other addresses though, a lot of them haven't actually spent their bitcoins at all (and even if they have, if you follow an extra hop, you'll still get to an address that is just sitting on the bitcoins).

So basically, there's just not much to go on, and all I can really say is that it doesn't look they immediately cashed out.  The only other, very speculative, thing I can think of is that the "self-change" behavior of all the addresses is the default behavior of MyWallet, so there's a chance the thief is using that wallet service and you might be able to appeal to its operator (as was done earlier this year with Strongcoin; see here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=14085.msg1885921#msg1885921).  Then again, using the same address to collect change is also a behavior of many advanced desktop clients, so that's very possibly a dead end.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't be more helpful, and sorry to hear about the theft!"

I didn't recognize MyWallet off the top of my head, so I looked it up and discovered that that's Blockchain's online wallet: https://blockchain.info/wallet.  So if her speculation is correct, we could ask them for the money back.  Although based on what it says on the My Wallet page, it doesn't look like even they have access to the money stored in there since it's encrypted before it even hits their servers.

So it's *possible* that it's stored on Blockchain's servers somewhere.  It's also possible that it's sitting in the thief's Armory wallet, in which case, we're obviously totally out of luck.
