1. Don't depend on what people say here in this forum; instead be resourceful. There are a lot of topics here asking what to invest and most do give out great tips for longer term.

2. Research a lot! Trust me, it will be of your benefit and not ours.

3. Since you are asking ideas of what to buy now and keep longer, check this website coinmarketcap.com and you'll find things you need when trading (ideas of coins to buy that is).

4. And I surmise you barely know anything about Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies that much yet, then just stick to what you know first and go for long term with what you are familiar with like for example Bitcoin; if that's what you are accustomed to.

For long-term investments you can choose bitcoin, because bitcoin is the strongest coin and will last a long time. And for alternatives you can choose ethereum because ethereum also has good potential and can last long.

In my own opinion, in terms of long term investing in what to buy is to look first for a very successful ICO that was just recently finished by researching which coins or tokens is to going to increased rapidly in short amout period of time because if you found out what coins or tokens it is, you can earn a lot of profit easily. Just be patient to look for coins or tokens which have a big potential by reading and learning about its ICO.

i think if you want to a long term investment, then investing in ETH is a good decision, because rightnow, Ethereum is one of the most famous altcoins on the market just after btc, thanks to advance technologies, it has become the most favorite altcoins of most investors on the world, the more ETH is being hunted, the more valueable ETH can be in the future.

buy exist coin if you want keep it for long term and my recomendation are :
1. ethereum : the price will probably going high after casper release and it will enter staking phase
2. Neo : the reason to buy it is coin in circulation is smaller then ethereum and the price is still way below ethereum price
3. eon form exscudo : the reason is the coin will be launch this q1 2018 and if it is under $10 when it is launch buy it because thats under value..my prediction this coin will goes to top ten easy

I think you could invest into GEMS. Now it very cheap, it trading at 0.39x from ICO price. Gems is trying to become the decentralized version of Amazon Mechanical Turk and Crowdflower. Gems eliminate consensus by redundancy through the use of staking and trust scoring mechanism.

There are a lot of choices for you but at first you should know how much money you could spend to invest then you'll know which one is the best coin that you should invest in. If you just have a little amount of money to invest in crypto I think you should choose coin with low price like XRP, XLM but if you have more than 1k$ to invest I think the best choice at the moment is BTC or NEO.

Buy long twrms holds only when they're low. IOTA, ADA, are great long term holds.

TRX and OCN are long term holds for this year specifically. Not sure when IOTA will ever be integrated into real world use.

I have bought TRX this year, it will take more time to hold it  since the price is still lesser the time I bought it, but I think in long term progress and some real good improvement will still keep it going. I plan to hold Sia and verge, and adbnk too.

You can analyze market price movements, choose the type of coin that has the potential to be used as a long-term investment. If you have enough capital, vary the type of coin that will be invested so as not to focus on one type of coin only. One of the types of coins you will make as an investment is bitcoin, because bitcoin will continue to increase in value even though the movement is slow but slowly going to the moon.
