Does anybody have a good idea to raise some funds? Is it crazy for us if we ask other online wallets, trading sites, or organizations (coinbase, blockchain.info, mtgox, bitcoin foudation, coindesk, bitcoin magazine...) to sponsor this project somehow in order to get some good publicity and unlink the name of bitcoin with scammers and hackers?  As I said somewhere before, I´m not an expert. Sorry if I´m saying something stupid but I just can´t keep myself silent after this catastrophe... I just don´t want to imagine a scenario in which some people received partial refunds, others none, and at the end, everything is forgotten... until the next big rob happens.

Hopefully we all learned the lesson here... some of us cheaply, and some at an extremely dire price: Be wary of every and all third parties when dealing with BTC, online wallets are just looking for trouble and zero liability is asking for even more trouble.   But yes, at this stage, an incident like this must not remain forgotten, especially if we want Bitcoin to be widely adopted. It was not okay in the MyBitcoin days, and it's certainly worse today.

Agreed - something positive should come from this disaster. EDIT - I do actually have a few ideas for this, but it would require TF help/discussion.

I like your thinking & I am inclined to have the same thoughts. I do not find it crazy whatsoever. Is it a possibility to gather some donaters? Yes, I believe there is a possibility there are a lot of big holders that were early adopters . Am I totally convinced it will happen, not entirely. Especially at today's prices. As far as idea's to raise donated funds, my ideas are coming up null but I think this thread is a good start and is the least we can do. I know that TF is getting a ton of crap for all this and his rep is tarnished. The moment he slipped up he was exploited BUT the fact is he is human, owning up to his actions and showing a massive amount of community by working to repay the users. He could very easily disappear and start a new account. so much to say on the issue.

One further point I want to concur with you is that I cannot bear to remain silent about this. Ive beat this point in the ground and I know that we are all in the same boat whether you jumped in at BTC/3$, 7$ or beyond. Ive (we) have worked very hard for my BTC. Selling items and a ton of manual daily trading with the ups and downs of the btc and security markets. This was my entire holdings lost in coinlenders. I would deposit, pull out , deposit and pull out. When you have single digit BTC holdings, it almost justifies the high risk of using a service that offers 22% fee rebates. In hindsight, it seems like it was a poor decision on my part but the point im trying to make is we are a community and times like this it calls for pulling together and thinking outside the box. I have a powerful idea, that I have been exploring prior to this disaster and I think it would be good for the bitcoin community in general if it's done right, but it's not really appropriate for forum fodder or it will likely be exploited.

I would like to discuss it with tf but I know it's not a good time right now.

But in the longer term, we need better prevention for theft and some kind of justice for the crimes.

I asked them if they could somehow help this project. Maybe I´m quite naive but I really had great plans for the money I was collecting so hard...

I wouldn't get my hopes up someone will "bail out" TF after what happened. I was lucky and wise in not investing my every single BTC in this, but it's still some money I could really use for right now for unforeseen RL expenses. I'd be more focused in raising awareness, like with this thread, so it never happens again.

I am a contractor by day.

I have been burned many times before.  And have experienced financial difficulties my self, however I have always (and will always) repay debts.

Bankruptcy is never an option.  Until there is no option.

This guy played the game and messed up but still needs to pay.

A statement of his affairs needs to be published listing all his assets and liabilities, personal and business.

I'm sure there must be guys on here from a legal background who know the way forward with this.  I for one would be happy to contribute to their fees to see everyone's money returned with costs.

In my experience in these matters patience is definitely not the correct policy.
