The first ever board form Tehcnobit was HEX16A - 16 Avalon chips making 7-8GH/s, prety good miner with a great price tag. The HEX16A's successor is here, the new board is codenamed HEX16A2 and is populated with 16 Avalon Gen2 55nm chips. The design of the board is open source and compete for Avalon's design contest.

The miner looks identical with the other boards from the HEX line, no surprise here. That concept proved to have several advantages like stacking, decent cooling, great power module and 16 chips board is great for the customer as a price point, especially for newcomers that don't have or willing to risk a lot of money for mining equipment.

Performance:
At the Technobit's site, HEX16A2 is advertised as 24GH miner, let's see how it handles varius settings.

@eligius

Here is a chart with the performance of HEX16A2, keep in mind that the consumption may not be very accurate:
  • 1000/0900mV ~24W - 15.86GH/s - 1.51W/GH (less than 1% HW)
  • 1300/1020mV ~56W - 20.30GH/s - 2.76W/GH (less than 2% HW)
  • 1400/1060mV ~74W - 21.28GH/s - 3.47W/GH (less than 2% HW)
  • 1500/1120mV ~92W - 22.85GH/s - 4.03W/GH (less than 2% HW)
  • 1600/1160mV ~108W - 24.15GH/s - 4.47W/GH (less than 3% HW) - hot
As you can see the efficiency drops dramatically when overclocked. The power connector of the boards is a standard molex which is rated to deliver upto 132W at 12V, HEX16A had similar power consumption and that was not an issue. However I recommend you to stay bellow 1500Mhz, the hashrate gain just ain't worth it.

Cooling:
HEX16A2 is equipped with the same cooling solution as it's predecessor. At higher clocks it runs pretty hot, but nothing to worry about. If you need quiet miner you will have to lower the clocks and switch the fan's connector from 12 to 5V. At 1000mhz the massive heatsink is more than enough to cool down the board even at low fan speeds.

Pricing:
HEX16A2 is selling for 299,30€ chips included, which is a good offer for a starter. Compared to the bitfury based HEX16B, they have identical price per GH ratio, but the Fury is more efficient. With the bitcoin price of over $1000 both miners are bargain.

Here is the updated comparison of the recent products from Technobit along with new 20nm product from KnC:

Software:
Technobit's HEX line still lags proper mining software for Windows. You can only mine with their special HEXMiner, which has some improvements in the latest version 1.0.0.3 such as the automatic connection restart - that compensate the memory leak. But still if you connect more boards to the PC you need a lot of CPU power to handle board's work requests. For whatever reason you choose to mine on windows host, you'll need the driver for the board and HEXMiner. The setup is similar to HEX16A so you can check nemercry's video tutorial for Windows.

As with the previous HEX board I highly recommend that you get one cheap TP-Link TL-MR3020 and flash it with the firmware from Technobit's website. You can also order it directly from them at slightly higher price, but pre-flashed and ready to rock. Of course if you have a linux host it will best to just compile cgminer with the latest patch from Technobit or download my build for Ubuntu x64.

Pros:
  • Price tag
  • Availability
  • Software voltage control
  • Cooling
  • Stackable

Cons:
  • no cgminer/bfgminer for Windows
  • no CAN-Bus

Conclusion:
Yet another great product from Tehnobit, even that I would recommend the BitFury based HEX16B. To be honest I'm not very pleased with the new Avalon chips. The efficiency is far from great but still better than BFL 65nm. Don't get me wrong, the Bulgaria based company once again did a great job with this challenge. Hopefully in the near future they will solve the issues with mining software under windows.

Any ideas on how you can link them together so uses one usb controller? What PSU would be the best ?

Do not need to be powered anymore.
Only Avalon gen1 based HEX16A requires powered hub.
With HEX16B and A2 you can used passive hub and to power even tp-link router from the boards and hub .

My 5850...took a beating for 2 and a half years, having been overclocked and overvolted in the past, mining 24/7 for weeks(in the overclocked state), reaching 90C sometimes, VRMs going over 120C without me noticing, and never once did I get a hardware error. And I still haven't.

So how come this device has any hardware errors at all?

With that said, me being from OP's and marto74's country, if I order this device, when exactly will I get it delivered? Will I have to pay duty or VAT? Delivered to my doorstep? I assume it's fully assembled and everything, I won't have to do any soldering? Apart from a PSU, it works out of the box?

I asked marto74 a couple of questions via pm, he answered one but ignored the shipping date question. I asked again and have gotten no response.

Great review, very informative indeed.

Regarding

"As with the previous HEX board I highly recommend that you get one cheap TP-Link TL-MR3020 and flash it with the firmware from Technobit's website."

What is the need for this? Can I not just plug this miner to my pc psu and usb download the driver and the miner and ready to rock?

I bought a couple of these boards and really afraid it will be hard to get them working now. Obviously research is key but info about this product is next to none on the web, so once again I thank you!

Yes, you can just plug it into your windows host, install the driver and start mining. I recommend the router or any linux host as a better, flawless solution. You can give it a try with HEXMiner in windows and if there are some problems buy the router from you local retailer and flash it.

750 W at least if I read the power figures right. Pay attention to 12v rail it should be at least 60 Amps. That power will let you run the boards overclocked
If I were you I shall go with 850 wats 70 amps 12v with tplink all powered from PSU only sharing common ground

Scam-Busting PSA: Beware of Black Arrow Software

Just a quick PSA, but if you're waiting for delivery, check your order history on the Technobit website, look at the bottom of the order details page and check if you've got any messages there. I've been waiting for an update on my mine, and just noticed that a note was added to ask me to clarify my delivery address a week ago. It's my fault for not checking this page regularly enough, but I didn't receive any email notification saying there was a query with my order or hint that a message has been posted to the site about it so I had no clue until I was just scouring the site for more details on my order progress. I've received all the regular 'newsletter' email updates, so I don't think it's a spam filter problem, more likely just a case of no notification emails generated when a query is raised on an order. Not casting any blame, just want to alert others to check their pages and avoid any delays like I've just had.

Thanks for asking, I receive a quite some PMs about order numbers and ETA, hope that this makes it clear.
I'm a customer and definitely not part of the business.

I get early delivery because usually my order is one of the first and I get the chance to receive pre-production sample or first batch device. And of course my shipping is less than 24h - same country Smiley

There is no can-bus support in this revision of the board, so you'll need powered USB hub for more boards.

Do not need to be powered anymore.
Only Avalon gen1 based HEX16A requires powered hub.
With HEX16B and A2 you can used passive hub and to power even tp-link router from the boards and hub .
10x to our board designer for the efforts in this direction

Nice move! The TP-Link router doesn't seem to want to be fed 5v into the USB socket itself - so I am guessing there is a series blocking diode in the router so 5v output only from the USB... But I suspect it will be fairly easy to hardware mod the router to be able to take its 5v from the hub/HEX16A2/B by linking the 5v from the power input to the USB connector (or locating & shorting the series diode)... Then it is a very tidy solution.

I already ordered two in the december batch.... really considering maxxing out my credit card and buying two more for january delivery... What do you guys think the diff will be like at the end of january? Or should I just buy shares in a prospero or neptune? It somehow just seems nicer to have them at home so I can mine altcoins whenever I want.

Oh and how many can you chain off a single host?

Thx 4 the awesome review!!

I would seriously question about maxxing your credit card out... This business is a big gamble and the number one rule in gambling is never bet more than you afford to lose. As it stands currently there is insufficient confidence in BTC to make large investment questionable. Don't forget that when mining becomes unprofitable (the electricity costs more than the returns) you are going to be left with hardware that has no value. Many people already are questioning whether there is much money left to be made mining as the Terrahash hardware is only just around the corner. If you were seriously considering the credit card option it maybe more viable to pre-order and wait for this hardware - but again risky especially if delivery dates shift several months as past experience has shown... So, factor in interest payments into the proposition and I would say 'not for me' as it is debatable whether you can actually break even mining with the ever decreasing payouts that will occur - rather like that frog that starts from the centre of the pond and jumps half the distance towards the edge edge hop - he never quite makes it...

It is hashing for sure with all technobit products. You can get it preflashed from their site to save some time and troubles for almost same prace. If you are new just by one from there
http://technobit.eu/index.php?id_product=37&controller=product&id_lang=1

It is cheaper compared to 40 euros

If you have just on board you are good to go. You just need an usb cable and power. Otherwise consider buying USB hub(s) to connect more boards.
I guess you have a proper sized PSU to power your boards from?
In my rigs I am having 15 hexa connected to single tplink so I guess 10+ Avalon2 boards should be no problem

Hi Ioshia,

I understand about 10-port USB hub, but the device on technobit site looks like an USB hub too??!!

I've tried to order that thing there on technobit site, but it looks like an usb hub, so I don't know if that is what I need to produce Bitcois...!? Also, please let me know how much GH/s you get with one of those things?

http://technobit.eu/img/p/8/8/88-thickbox_default.jpg

Sorry to disturb you and Thanks for answering.
Hey,
The picture posted is not a miner. It connects your miner via USB to Btc network. This device produces 0 btc.
You have to look for assambled board with chips included. This device produces coins not the tplink

What a mess! Where can I find a mining machine or something that can produce btcs? I know there is a huge competition and manufacturers prefer to keep the miners for them but there still must be somewhore honest people who really sell something real not just taking and using people's money then send the expired mining rigs to the naive people who pay thousands of dollars for these ilusions... Am I wrong? Or not?
Thanks.

Here is the promised cgminer for Ubuntu

cgminer builds:

cgminer 3.8.4 / Ubuntu 12.04 x64:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8082585/cg/cgminer-hex16x-3.8.4.tar.gz

cgminer 3.8.5 / Ubuntu 10.04 x64 (should work on later versions)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8082585/cg/cgminer-hex16x-3.8.5.tar.gz

The cgminer is compiled with support only for HEX16A/A2/B boards

Options for HEX Boards:

For HEX16A - Gen1 Avalon chips:
--hexminera-voltage 1340 --hexminera-options 16:450 --set_default_to_a

For HEX16B - BitFury chips:
--hexminerb-voltage 900 --hexminerb-options 16:540 --set_default_to_b

For HEX16A2 - Gen2 Avalon chips:
--hexminerc-voltage 1060 --hexminerc-options 16:1400 --set_default_to_c

Great work.

Today I tested your cgminer 3.8.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 x64 using my recently purchased HEX16A2 and it really works fine.

It could be great, if you could build a "Windows" version of cgminer that supports HEX16A/A2/B boards.
In fact, I have been forced to move my HEX16A2 board on a Ubuntu 12.04 x64 machine with your cgminer 3.8.4, due to the fact HexMiner 1.0.0.3 for Windows was too unstable.

That is why tplink exists. You can try it and you will see how good it works . 200w of electricity savings will pay pout the tplink for a month or two. More over woithproper hub 10-15 boardas are not a problem

You should contact Technobit.eu and ask them for ETA, the price is visible at their website.

did you evaluate to setup a "support ticket system"? There are a lot of available open source support ticket systems. This can help you to categorize better all repetitive emails coming from single customers, and can improve your customers' experience

I have now filed a PayPal dispute with Technobit - if that fails it will be a chargeback. Marto has lied to me about supposed despatch via UPS Express 'at his expense' 2 weeks ago - unless he can come up with a tracking number to prove different?
He now just ignores everything I write (be that PM, message here, contact via website) because he knows there is no answer and the excuses have run dry. This is a business destined to failure - he claims to have taken on an extra staff member - but how do you contact them? He talks about buying January orders 10-20 a time - LOL! He cannot fulfil October/November orders letalone January! If you go via the Technobit website - you get the same non-response. Personally I think he talks rubbish and I believe very little that he has to say. He claims he is not a scammer and is prepared to refund 'within 5 minutes' - what utter BS. He does not refund - period.

Martin many thanks for your refund (proof you lied to me that it was dispatched when it clearly was not) - I make no apology for my words and opinions and if you seriously value being in business you would not treat customers in this way - have no fear my friend I shall not be placing any more orders from Technobit - account disabled or not.

Good luck

I can only talk for my self. I'm pretty satisfied with the Service of technobit. The miner arrived in a reasonable time frame and the price performance ratio is very good.
The could improve the comunication with their costumers but i can understand if they dont focus on answering 1000 times the same question and focusing instead on delivering the miners.

I actually do think it is a shame. My first order was fine and I am very happy with the quality of the hardware for the price. It was a little late but that was OK. The second order I placed 3 days after the first for some Nano Furies. These were 'shipped' and a tracking number was given. But a day later when I tried the tracking number on speedy.BG it said 'canceled' 'system returned'. I Pm'd Martin and he replied that the boards had been returned for unknown reason. That he would send the package next day ups express at his expense... After about a week of waiting (ups quote a day from Sofia to London) i start asking for new ups tracking number and whether it had been shipped... But martin then did not reply once - the next time I heard from him was my refund. So clearly the package was never sent ups... The fact that about 7 nano fury orders seemed to been 'canceled' by speedy suggests that these were deliberately pulled back from the couriers by Technobit for reasons unknown but whatever that reason is - is the reason they could not be delivered by ups because they were no longer available.  I don't think we will ever get to hear the real reason. so I would have been more patient if I was not being blatently lied to. This is not a business relationship I want - I would rather pay more and know that I would be treated as a customer should be and not lied to. I am thankful I managed to get a refund and consider myself lucky. It is a shame because the potential for Technobit is huge but reputation is everything - especially if you have removed safer methods of payment like Paypal.

I do genuinely hope Martin turns it around for the others out there sat waiting and wondering...

If they reply to the first mail that a customer sends them, the customer isn't left in wondering and won't send any more mails. If the customer isn't lied to about the delivery date, then he won't send any mails asking about shipment.

Putting some time in customer service isn't a waste of time. Technobit is also getting so many mails with the same questions because it's a big issue that was left unanswered. Ignoring the client is one of the stupidest things you can do.

Any reasonable person will pardon a delay if they are given a legitimate reason.

I have faith in Technobit. International shipping to various countries is not an easy thing to manage.  I belive with the adition of UPS express option this will help everybody out both purchaser and buyer.  I sent Marto 5 Bitfury chips in a barter agreement and have made a December purchase. I am not concerned and believe he will deliver on both ........... now my Hashfast pre order which is a diffrent matter all together.

I received my board on friday, but I didn't manage to compile a running cgminer with patch on my raspberry pi, because it seems that the driver is not found while "make" process.
So i installed Linux Mint on my HTPC and used 2GOODs precompiled version, which works fine at the moment, but the goal is to safe power and use the pi instead.

Any ideas why it won't work with pi?
I already tried different patches and versions of cgminer, but there is always the same error message:
Code:
CC     cgminer-usbutils.o
CC     cgminer-driver-hexminerc.o
CCLD   cgminer
cgminer-driver-hexminerc.o: In function `hexminerc_send_task':

make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/pi/cgminer'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

With what parameters do you guys start cgminer? My board is only hashing with 20GH/s at the moment.

thanks in advance

I built the patched version (for the hex bitfury but doesnt matter same patch) on pi without any issues.

Are u sure the patch u used matches the exact cgminer commit?

Whats the full name of the .patch file u used? and where did u download cgminer from?

I built it with the following steps posted in another thread:
Code:
1. sudo aptitude update
2. sudo aptitude install libudev-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libfox-1.6-dev autotools-dev autoconf automake libtool libncurses-dev yasm curl libcurl4-openssl-dev libjansson-dev pkg-config uthash-dev make pkg-config yasm

Code:
Code:
1. mkdir cgminer
2. cd cgminer
3. wget https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer/archive/v3.8.1.tar.gz
4. tar -xvf v3.8.1.tar.gz
5. cd cgminer-3.8.1
6. wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/5suzudn2t06087u/2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch
7. patch -p1 < 2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch
8. ./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-bitfury --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerb --enable-hexminerc
9. make

I also tried this with cgminer 3.8.5 and this patch (afe7710858e4ce28bb60f6ae6e167a18d687634f.patch)

Furthermore, I tried only using --enable-hexminerc
So far I am always getting the same error.

6. wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/5suzudn2t06087u/2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch

8. ./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-bitfury --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerb --enable-hexminerc
9. make

I also tried this with cgminer 3.8.5 and this patch (afe7710858e4ce28bb60f6ae6e167a18d687634f.patch)

Furthermore, I tried only using --enable-hexminerc
So far I am always getting the same error.

u should use fetch from git. the patch filename is the commit id ur supposed to use
Lets say you wanna use 2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch

Code:
git clone https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer.git
cd cgminer
wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/5suzudn2t06087u/2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch
git checkout 2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c
patch -p1 < 2e9afa38e39678a5dc5bf8be6d20baf1849b548c.patch
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-bitfury --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerb --enable-hexminerc
make

doing the git checkout thingy makes sure u r at the exact version the patch was made for.

Alright, thank you, the make process worked fine now.
Unfortunately, I am not able to test it right now since I'm not home, but i will give feedback.
Thanks man!!! Smiley

Well,

I am not able to get the board running again:

After make process, i tried to start cgminer with the following instructions:

1:
Code:
--hexminerc-voltage 1060 --hexminerc-options 16:1400
error message:
Code:
-bash: --hexminerc-voltage: command not found

2:
Code:
sudo ./cgminer --hexminerc-voltage 1060 --hexminerc-options 16:1400 --set_default_to_c
error message:
Code:
[2013-12-26 15:19:19] ./cgminer: --set_default_to_c: unrecognized option

3: Cgminer only starts this way:
Code:
sudo ./cgminer --hexminerc-voltage 1060 --hexminerc-options 16:1400

but only recognizing HEXa:

Edit:
with the parameter
Code:
sudo ./cgminer --hexminera-voltage 1120 --hexminera-options 16:1500
it starts mining for 5 seconds and the pi freezes

i dont have a hex16A2... but u could try

Code:
sudo ./cgminer --hexminera-voltage 1120 --hexminera-options 16:1500 --text-only --debug

that should spit out loads of things... paste the full output here maybe something stands out...

pi freezing also sounds like power issues.... how are you powering the pi? and are you providing enough power to the miners?

I was not able to run stable A and A2 on the same Ubuntu host, either one is working fine alone.
Also AFAIK it is best to power the Pi/usb hub from the same power source as HEX16A.

I don't understand why the A2 board was recognized on monday as HEXcand has been running ever since und your Ubunto version, and now i wanted to try it again, because on my pi it won't work,
it is also only been recognized as HEXa which is wrong in my opinion.

Edit:
I claim, that the patch is not working, because if I use ./autogen.sh --enable-hexminerc, there is still the undefined reference to SHA256 in the make process.

I believe the problem is with my HEX16A, mine is one of the first devices with older firmware and it is recognized by cgminer as:
Code:
 .USB dev 0: Bus 2 Device 11 ID: 04d8:000a
  Manufacturer: 'Microchip Technology Inc.'
  Product: 'CDC RS-232 Emulation Demo'

while HEX16A2 is:
Code:
 .USB dev 0: Bus 5 Device 4 ID: 04d8:000a
  Manufacturer: 'TECHNOBIT HEX ASIC Miner.'
  Product: 'HEX16C-Avalon2 ASIC Miner'

When both are connected on same host either one is detected wrong, I was able to run them manually with --usb select but it was not a good solution and I've moved the one to other host - problem solved for me.

This was with the old patch - 7ddb94d6964f2451d2e76f70b069dfdf2b3d4d6f.patch
It might be possible to edit the patch and force it to detect 'CDC RS-232 Emulation Demo' as HEX16A, but never tried it.

That is why set-default-to-a is there. In case of USB detect errors Wink HexB and C are ok though and are detected fine. The issue is that devid/vendid is equal on all hex boards and HexA is missing proper description string - not present. You can try 1.3 cgminer 3.8.5 all works even nanos

Hi all,

I hope someone can give me an answer / solution to my problem. I just received my HEX16A2 today and connected it to my Windows laptop to test it, but got issues with Hexminer. Following error message is being spammed in the entire miner_proxy. Tested both older and the newest version, but still the same error message. It seem to be able to connect to the pool but when start mining it doesn't seem to be able to get any further.

Have I configured it wrong or what could be the reason of these errors?  Huh

Thanks in advanced!

Did the driver installed correctly?
Did HEX MINER software setting point to correct com port & use right baud rate? Use the same baud rate that shown in device manager(default 9600).

Maybe you could post screen shot of device manager & HEX MINER 1.0.0.3
What i see in your mining_proxy seem normal.

I just received HEX16A2 & run it in WIN 7 64 bit. check my post on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=323727.msg4168053#msg4168053

This is the settings I'm using, checked that the drivers is installed and working and also that HEXminer is using correct rate.

You should enable auto reset(10 min is fine). I hope you not forget to switch on the PSU to powering the HEX16A2.

Please correct the Serial Bitrate to 115200 then the miner will work.

Since my board work with 9600 so i forget this, sorry. Then change the baudrate on windows device manager to 115200 & select that too on HEX Miner.

Edit:

I just found out that baudrate can increase & decrease your hash rate. Try each baud rate to find best performance Grin
115200 make my hash rate decrease.

I have tested both with 9600 and 115200, changed it within the Device Manager and in HEXminer, still the same error. The PSU is turned on and seem to be working, could try with another one as this PSu haven't been in use for a while..

Any other ideas if it isn't a PSU related problem?

Many thanks!

Pos and neg/gnd leads connected to the board the right way round, and taken from the psu the right way round? Have you got any photo's showing your setup which might answer silly little things like these?

From the proxy screen I see, that your user pass is wrong or you are using settings for different pool

Hi Marto,

BTCGuild doesn't require an specific password, or am I wrong here? - I know it says in the proxy log "Authorization required", why is that - a setting/line in the .ini file that's wrong for me?

But Marto, why is the LED red, what does that LED indicate usually and should I be green if all is OK?

Thanks in advance!

The lights  are OK on the picture.
So now in order to test make a slush pool account.

Run proxy from Windows not from hexminer
then put your slush account miner data and try.

Okay, I've now an account with Slush's. Started it and started the proxy, using following address: stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333

But I still have the same error, feeling like an idiot that I can't get it to work..  Embarrassed

Ok then you do not have 12 Volts delivered to the board.
Please check it with voltmeter

I don't have an voltmeter at home, but can perhaps get one tomorrow. But I have tested with two different PSUs I have at home, I know that they both have been functioning and one have been in use not long time ago.. Is there any way to check there if there could be any problem with the HEX board?

Marto, I tested on a fresh installed linux laptop now too... Turned on debug etc, maybe something of this gives you some ideas of the root cause of my problems?

But you think it is an PSU related problem..?

Can you test it with lower rates, please?

1000/0900mV ~24W - 15.86GH/s - 1.51W/GH
1300/1020mV ~56W - 20.30GH/s - 2.76W/GH

there should be enough power for the miners, it has been running under linux since sunday without any problems

700mA is is not enough. The pi producer is recommended to use min 1.3A if you are powering usb device.
Try it with lower rates (1000/0900mV ~24W - 15.86GH/s - 1.51W/GH) or use an active usb hub.

Hey,
1. Try with latest combiner 3.8.5 board recognition is buggy in oldest releases
2. Use set defaut-to- read change log
Best

The red LED should not lit, in my board it lit when no 12V from PSU. In normal operation the red LED is blinking. If the fan is on then maybe some part of the board not receive 12 V.

I don't know, but you should eliminate all possible sources of errors to limit the fault.
Another options is to use 2 instances of cgminer. One for each kind of miners.

If you had multimeter, try to measure the connectivity between molex pin to fan terminal. both 12v & ground. Visual check the solder pad of molex connector on bottom side. See if there is any crack in solder.
If all good then you need to send back the board to marto. But if you found crack, you can solder your self  Grin & save time.

The patch is working, the problem is you can't enable only hexminerc. You need to enable hexminera too. For the reason you can try ask marto  Grin

So i test with
Code:
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-hexminerc

Then this is what happen when you give "make" command: undefined reference to sha256_k

But if you run with
Code:
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerc

Then "make" command will success

Thanks, it worked!!!
It is a real irritating mistake which cost lot of time to "solve". Just forgot the enable hexminera, but I am most certainly sure that I did try this, maybe only with version 3.8.1.

The patch is working, the problem is you can't enable only hexminerc. You need to enable hexminera too. For the reason you can try ask marto  Grin

Thanks, it worked!!!
It is a real irritating mistake which cost lot of time to "solve". Just forgot the enable hexminera, but I am most certainly sure that I did try this, maybe only with version 3.8.1.

Thanks again! Smiley

Gratz  Grin

It's not forgot, because we all think that we can enable/disable separate HEX miner. It's clearly not now  Grin cause some driver are connected.

Hello

blitzwilli
You need to run seven instances of cgminer limiting each one to one board HEXc is the driver abbreviation + seven different cog miner con figs
The other option is to run them at once one instance with load-balance and add 4 pools manually to miner.sh preferable option

I just got 3 of these boards, used.  All three mined fine for about an hour, then one stopped.  The stopped one now doesn't even light up it's Red LED.  The fan is still going OK, and I don't see any signs of component damage.  It is being picked up by cgminer, but obviously it's not hashing.

Any ideas what I can do to get this thing working again?

Hi guys,

I recently bought a HEX16A2 and having some trouble. I successfully patched cgminer 3.8.5 but it's not hashing:

I compiled cgminer as follows:

Code:
wget https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer/archive/v3.8.5.tar.gz
 tar xvfz v3.8.5.tar.gz
cd cgminer-3.8.5
wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/bqn2fzpglcs20be/afe7710858e4ce28bb60f6ae6e167a18d687634f.patch
patch -p1 < afe7710858e4ce28bb60f6ae6e167a18d687634f.patch
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerc
make

... and start cgminer using the following line:

Code:
 sudo ./cgminer --hexminerc-voltage 1120 --hexminerc-options 16:1500 -o stratum.btcguild.com:3333 -u user_name-p pass_word --set_default_to_c --debug

(--debug flag is for testing purposes only)

Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

Everything seems fine, anyway you should try the latest version from here:

Code:
git clone https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer.git
cd cgminer
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8082585/cg/b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704.patch
git checkout b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704
patch -p1 < b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704.patch
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-bitfury --enable-hexminerc
make

P.S.

The board need 12V, i.e. the Yellow cord from the PSU Smiley

Hi

I have a big problem.
I have 5 miners and all of them work fine IF a let them work one by one...even two together work fine.
BUT.....

If i want to let 3 miners work together, the PSU crashes.

The miners, the hub and the MR-3020 are ALL conected to the same PSU-Molex cable-tree.
The PSU has 550W....

What can be the problem?

Can it be that the PSU is too old even it has NEW 550W?

Pls help me ..... i cann't solve this problem

I made a shortcut betwen the green and black cable to turn the PSU on without motherboard.
So
1. Chosse a single rail PSU
2. When board is OC-e it is eating about 9.5 Amps
So if i were on your shoes i will connect just two boards to this PSU when i am absolutely sure that each board is connected on a separate 12V rail. Does this explanation clears up a mastery crash;)
And do not push it to much magic smoke will come out sooner or later. I am not joking here i am serious

So you say that the PSU is too poor to run more then 2 boards at once?

Will a new PSU work better and how much power do i need to run all 5 together?

Would this one do the job?

Dude,

First please excuse me i just saw that it is Avalon2 boards. So i do not know what the board consumption is but i know that it is getting close to Avalon1 And definitely i say that i would not run more than two broads on this PSU. Whatever you do choose a SINGLE rail PSU. Do you know to what rails are the boards connected i guess no.. and so on

PS:
http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/v-series-psu/v1000/

Yes it will do and you will have a room for more boards this one is too powerful.
My advise is to measure exact board consumption on 12V and choose appropriate one you can save a bug for sure. If this is not an option for you go with 1000W  Wink

what is the rating AMPS of PSU 12V rail is it a single one?

PSU-Model: pentium iv & pfc model lc6550G version 2.0

MAC DC OUTPUT:

Voltage 230V:
+3.3V -> 35A
+5V -> 40A
+12V1 -> 16A

Current 4A
+12V2 -> 18A
-12V -> 0.8A
-5V -> 0.5A

Frequency 50Hz
+5VSB -> 2.0A
BLK - > COM
GRN - > PS-ON
GRY -> PG

I just orderd one of these PSU's and in a few hours i will try it out.
Hopefully it's gonna do the job.

Thank you very much for your help so far. I'll gonna give a feedback when it runs.
;-)

It will do the job. Just make sure you use all molex cables. Do not connect more than one miner to a single molex cable even though it has two more connectors in parallel. Unless you ought to Wink
This is the best advice here. If you  have more miners then Molex then use a ATX 4 pin extender to molex or 4 pin extender and cut the cable off one end. That way you still get 12v but it is not all on the same cable.  Even a single one can cause the molex wires to be warm.

Well....

I have the things pluged together and everything works just fine and smooth.
Two Molex-Cable and three SATA-Cables with Molex-Adapters.
Every miner has its own powercable and the cable keeps really cool.

My configuration for the miners are:
[Frequency] => 1400
[Core Voltage] => 1000
and i get
[MHS 5s] => 22.33G
[MHS av] => 21.39G

I know that i could go up to Frequency 1500 and CoreVoltage 1100, but i get not more hashes.
I need just more Watts.

Thanks for your help and advise to everybody here.

Happy mining

okay, its not just the PSU's fault, its also yours.
1) when you say you run 2 or even 3 boards plus other components on a single 'molex tree', are you referring to a singlular cable with multiple 4-pin molex connectors along its length?
if you are - thats problem #1. There is only a single 12V lead in that cable, meaning two things:
a) it will be tied to only one of the PSU's 12V rails. lets assume the lower, 16A: 16*12=192W. This is barely enough power for 2 units at full speed/overclock.
b) check your cable. its unsafe to pull more than 60-100w through a single 18AWG cable like your PSU probably has. You can easily melt the plastic and start fires.

2) In order to properly power more than 2 of these on your supply, you need to identify which rail supplies which 12V power cables. Usually 1 rail is dedicated to the 4/8-pin square ATX mobo plugs and the other for the PCI cables and molex accessory cables. using the above math, you can assume you have 2 rails each capable of 2 devices. You 100% will not be able to fit 5 without massive underclocking of 3 of them.

my advice: snip the heads off the PCI and ATX mobo connectors, and use a wire pair per device.

Everything seems fine, anyway you should try the latest version from here:

Code:
git clone https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer.git
cd cgminer
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8082585/cg/b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704.patch
git checkout b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704
patch -p1 < b535bc08267aef90511afff23cb9ec48c4a6a704.patch
./autogen.sh --enable-avalon --enable-bitfury --enable-hexminerc
make

P.S.
===
The board need 12V, i.e. the Yellow cord from the PSU Smiley

Thanks, but when I run make I'm getting the following error:

I got one of these today. I plugged in the power and turned on my computer and the power cable going into it melted. Is my PSU the issue?

Form FactorATX
Wattage750W
Modular CablingNo
Fan120 mm
Input Voltage100 ~ 240 VAC
+3.3V25 A
+5V25 A
+12V 150 A
+12V Rails1

Is your board with molex or terminal connection !?

Did it burned right away or after some time, maybe something is shorted ?!

at higher speeds it can draw over 100W. Molex cables are usually designed for 60W. IMO its not a good idea running these off a cheap/thin cable because it WILL burn through.

I had a chinese 6pin pci extension that was marked 18AWG on all the wires but burst into flames within 5 minutes of being used to carry 180W for an antminer. make sure your wires are thick

Has anyone managed to get a hexminer to work with cgminer 4.0.1? Do I need to compile against 3.8.5?

Also, is there a new proxy for stratum for hexminer? I've got a HEX16A2 that I have not been able to use because I can't get anything to run it and it is killing me! Sad

There is no cgminer with HEX support for windows, you need linux box.

I believe the stratum proxy is included in the package, there is a link to a video how-to in the OP

Hmm.. maybe it's my miner, then... I get no lights on the bottom, although the fan runs. Hexminer >seems< to detect it as COM PORT 41, but I get no work out of it...

I have a diode (I think) from the 12V molex pin to pin 2 and  pin 3 (if 12v is pin 1)... I don't see that in any of the pictures online. is this a revision, or ...?

EDIT: OK, got the miner to work with hexminer under windows - Kind of sloppy, IMHO. Now I just need to figure out how to get cgminer to compile, and I'll be a happy camper.

Just picked up one of these miners recently. thanks for this post, and the link to the older tutorial for setting up HEX miner using the proxy. I was having a bit of trouble setting it up.

I got some different results than that of the OP when upping voltage. I noticed better hashrate by keeping voltage generally lower (1.200v-1.35v) and clocking the ship to somewhere around 1540-1580 MH/s. My current settings are 1560 MH/s @ 1.350v. This gives me ~22.3 GH/s, and my voltage never tends to top out over 1.220v. It runs a bit on the warm side, but I'd expect it to do so. Running under 1500 MH/s @ 1.200v-1.300v lefter me with a hashrate under 20 GH/s.

Unfortunately, I don't have the tools or knowhow to test heat, and it seems that these do not have a sensor. Although it was advertised at 24+GH/s, that is indeed misleading. You have to run it pretty hot to get 24-25 GH/s, and I'm not sure it's worth it. My current settings leave me with a warm miner, but it's nothing like a couple BFL 10 GH/s units I own that would reach as high as 82C before I began running them without part of the shell, and even had to take one apart to adjust the tension of heatsink, since the way it was put together had warped the PCB, leaving partial gaps between one of the ships and the sink. Now that one never goes above 72C. I don't think this HEX16A2 is getting near that kind of heat.

For the price I gave (at the time equaled ~$150 USD, and I had no cash, only BTC), I think I got a fine deal. Buying gone new for over 220 Euro seems pricey, but if they push them out the door within 48 hrs, and it may be not so bad of a decision. I'm pleased with my little unit, and if I can find a second one for a similar price, I may well ad another and see if I can figure out enough of Linux to run them on a Raspberry PI or something similar.

As for using CGminer, even with the patch, I couldn't get it to work properly. Not sure what I was doing wrong, and I don't have enough skills to get into the nuts and bolts to try to sort out problems myself. After watching the tutorial on how to use HEX miner, that was good enough for me. I think if you mainly have 55 nm tech, you'll be pleased with the lower power consumption this has compared to any BFL units you might be using. Compared with 28 nm products, well, there isn't really any. My KnC Mercury runs at around 143 GH/s, and pulls ~139W from the wall, so less than 1W per GH/s

If you got lower hash rate at 1100/1500, then i suspect that your miner had dead chip
You can check by running ./cgminer-api stats command under cgminer ofc. You need to compile cgminer-api first  Grin

I am waiting my new HEX16A2 Grin , now i have assembled a reinforced molex with 2 cables for each pin, i hope that it can deliver all the current necessary for the miner without burning.
Can someone explain how compile cgminer-api, i have compiled with only the options
Code:
./autogen.sh --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerc
make

are requested others options?

Thanks in advance Luca

Don't forget to apply patch before compile   Cheesy
Code:
1. git clone https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer.git
2. mv cgminer cgminer-3.12.3
3. cd cgminer-3.12.3
4. git checkout e447b697d90c4d1e4c6a2dc8bd9bfc3eab23115f
5. wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/hfx7l4hz5ywgw3x/e447b697d90c4d1e4c6a2dc8bd9bfc3eab23115f.patch
6. patch -p1 < e447b697d90c4d1e4c6a2dc8bd9bfc3eab23115f.patch
7. ./autogen.sh --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerc
8. make

To compile cgminer-api, on cgminer folder run command:
Code:
gcc api-example.c -Icompat/jansson-2.5 -Icompat/libusb-1.0/libusb -o cgminer-api

Then add api allow & api listen to cgminer.conf
Code:
"api-listen" : true,
"api-allow" : "R:127.0.0.1",

You can run it on compiled cgminer foder with command:
Code:
./cgminer-api stats
or
./cgminer-api summary

Or you can copy cgminer-api to /usr/bin so you can run "cgminer-api stats" anywhere  Grin & without using ./

Zich, this consistently fails for me, and it suddenly occured to me that the cgminer git is now at 4.0.1 - Is there a patch for 4.0.1 or should I try to load the 3.12.3 from an archive?

There is git checkout command that will make sure you are at right version. if you follow the step by step, there should be no problem.
What is the error message? Maybe one of dependencies is not installed.

Code:
1. sudo aptitude update
2. sudo aptitude upgrade
3. sudo aptitude install libudev-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libfox-1.6-dev
4. sudo aptitude install autotools-dev autoconf automake
5. sudo aptitude install libtool libncurses-dev yasm
6. sudo aptitude install curl libcurl4-openssl-dev libjansson-dev screen
7. sudo aptitude install pkg-config uthash-dev make git-core

New patch already publish by marto but for cgminer-4.0.0
Code:
1. git clone https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer.git
2. mv cgminer cgminer-4.0.0
3. cd cgminer-4.0.0
4. git checkout 2786526d9f1acb7bd903ece3c822c2c9203aa0b7

7. ./autogen.sh --enable-hexminera --enable-hexminerc --enable-hexminerb --enable-hexminer8

If you run it at 1400/1040mV - 21GH/s or lower settings lets say 1300/1000 you can put Arctic F9 Standart:

I get a message that my HEXMINER proxy is outdated, but I can't find a new proxy on the Technobit site... Does anyone know if there is a new proxy? Today Eligius stopped accepting any hashes from the current proxy, probably part of the hashrate exploit fix.

Great review, and thanks for the overclocking results! Just picked up a few of these, and I'm running them on windows now, but I'm really interested in their apparent ability to run on a router with ddwrt. Should be an interesting project!

Zich, you really are my hero.

Any word on a working windows version of cgminer or bfgminer? hexminer refuses to work with more than one HEX16A2. It's really starting to make me angry...

Until now there is no working cgminer that can work with HEX board under windows.
If you insist on windows, you can use virtual pc with ubuntu then compile cgminer.

But more efficient to use TPLINK TL-MR3020 as host  Cheesy

I think I will try that out... I"m ready to smash things - I never could get the cgminer patch to work on ubuntu, either... very strange.

cgminer for Windows here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8082585/cg/cgminer_technobit_win/cgminer.rar

You need Zadig:
http://zadig.akeo.ie/downloads/zadig_2.1.0.exe

just edit config file and run it

tested with HEX16A2/B/A1

Does Not detect units on startup so unplug & replug, Then works fine.

Big thanks. Hex miner was driving me crazy!

The only thing i find i have to run this cg miner only for my Hex 16 C units & i run the latest cgminer for my BFL unit.

Hello lads, I've got a little issue. I'm trying to run one Hex16A2, I'm using a 500W PSU with 12v 16a for the yellow lines, I've tried switching from the molex lines to CPU lines but the PSU crashes if I set the MH/s above 380 in HexMiner/CGMiner for the 16 avalon gen 2 chips.

The PSU is currently powered by 220V if it matters.

Here's a screenshot of my current HexMiner settings.

(ATX) C3Tech PUF-4050S, they don't seem to sell this one around anymore though. The manufacturer which used to build it is the same which builds for Corsair, Thermaltake and OCZ. Made mostly out of chinese components, however.

(ATX) C3Tech PUF-4050S, they don't seem to sell this one around anymore though. The manufacturer which used to build it is the same which builds for Corsair, Thermaltake and OCZ. Made mostly out of chinese components, however.

So I should try replacing the yellow +12v rail for the +5v rail? Won't that cause a red light on the Hex16A2?

No, i mean add additional load on your +5V PSU rail. The miner still use +12V. You can add HDD or old cdrom drive.
Some people say this do the trick to make the PSU more stable.

Connected an old HDD, it worked, the PSU won't crash when raising the MH/s or voltage. Thank you. Oh, also, another Hex16A2 unit came today, I wonder if adding it to another rail will remove the need for the HDD or if the trick just works with the +5v rail.

Nice, i read about this trick on thread  Grin. Additional HEX16C only use 12V, so you still need load on +5V rail.

If the host is Rpi or TPLINK, then get the power from PSU +5V. Then you can remove the hdd.
