UPDATED: Please update to v0.8.11.1 using the links below.  The new build adds checkpoints and updates dns seeds.

We are pleased to announce the release of Molecule on 14 December 2013.

Molecule is a CPU minable alt coin based on Quark, which was in turn based on SifCoin.  The coin uses a combination of algorithms that makes it resistant to GPU and ASIC mining.

The purpose of creating this coin was both for my own edification to learn about creating one, as well as to provide a coin with economics/coin design that I think works and provides a broader opportunity for folks to mine some coin.

Molecule will be backed by promotion and publicity efforts, with the intention of spreading awareness and growing a community.  Branding, Awareness, Community, and Marketing is what I believe will differentiate molecules from other coins.

About Molecules:

200,000,000 max molecules will be created
784 molecules per block
Reward halves every 120,960 blocks (~42 days)
30 second block targets
Low starting diff
Difficulty retargets every 20 blocks, max adj. 100% up/200% down
140 confirms per block
NO PREMINE (premine was deleted in forked blockchain)

Port: 11879
Default RPC Port: 18474

How To Mine
Wallet
To mine with the wallet, you can either add a line to molecule.conf:

Code:
gen=1

Alternatively, open the debug console (Help -> Debug Window) and type setgenerate true

Miner
To mine with a miner you need to ensure your molecule.conf file has settings for RPC, and then point your miner at the local rpc server.  molecule.conf should be placed either in %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Molecule on Windows or ~/.molecule/molecule.conf on Linux.

Example molecule.conf:

Code:
listen=1
maxconnections=80
gen=0
genproclimit=-1
rpcuser=myuser
rpcpassword=mypassword
server=1
rpcport=11875

Example minerd command line:

Code:
minerd64_sse4.exe -q -a quark --url http://127.0.0.1:11875 -u myuser -p mypassword

Really excited to release this and hope you all have fun!  Looks like a few have already discovered it and are collecting Molecules.  Download the wallet and get some Molecules for yourself today while the difficulty is low!

Difficulty doesn't seem to adjust either, they said 20 blocks it has been like 15000 and no adjust... I even checked the logs and the retargets are happening but they end up exactly the same.

Quark was publicly mineable and many people decided not to do so. Very different.

If anyone is looking for a non-premined quark clone this is one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=366762.0

200M total ~ 1451520 total blocks.  I pre-mined ~1.5%, and a couple other folks jumped on and started mining while I was testing.  I noted this upfront in the post...

Looks like I may have a bug on the difficulty retarget, will push another build shortly.

You mined ~1.5% of blocks but ~5.5% of all coins.

People hate when someone mines any blocks. Your coin is dead already.

Personally I think a pre mine is okay if the dev is using it for giveaways and bounties. Plus look at quark 95% of coins mined and still at top of marketcap list.

best to start a give away thread - i would say give 70% of what you have mined back to the community or the coin is a non starter.

1-2% premine is a LOT but yours is 2% of the blocks, that is much more.

From Quark to Molecule??? where was atom ffs

This coin just started and 10k+ blocks are premined?  Something tells me this isn't going to go far. Complete "premine" coin. Or peecoin for short
