Thanks Mods for banning those bots! Interesting enough, without the bump bots there hasn't been any new post in that thread for 6 days. I won't manually check my other list, most of the accounts have been banned, if some got away I'll catch them in their next run. Banning them is the motivation I needed to continue my hunt, so prepare for more lists to nuke
I noticed 🔥[ANN][ICO] Seal - The Currency of Authenticity 💖 still fills with Brand new spammers, but they don't instantly delete their posts now. I wouldn't be surprised if the spambots adjusted the delay between posts in that thread.

Anyone noticed this bot spam in Off Topic recently? I think they're related to the Russian bump bot services. Probably farming accounts getting ready to use. Pretty easy to spot though giving the naming of them: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2161508 Scott Spiegel May 28, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2105501 Robin Smith May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2107797 Kathryn Lentz May 12, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2162230 Marisa Summers May 28, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2105481 Mark Clem May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2161478 Albert Cornelius May 28, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098397 Davis Vanbuskirk May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2162962 Noah David May 29, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2125721 Letitia Bolden May 16, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2126601 Barbara Pieper May 16, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2108071 William Jeffers May 12, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2108082 Kayla Schmidt May 12, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2158933 Med Johnson May 27, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098383 Madelyn Jackson May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098408 Rebecca May May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2107000 Alberto Del Rio May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2105580 Peggy Almaraz May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2099190 Loraine Stewart May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2107802 Eileen Johnson May 12, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2127951 Ruby Erickson May 17, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2125759 Edwin King May 16, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2151070 Lillian Keely May 24, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098408 Rebecca May May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2162161 Carolyn Hendricks May 28, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2162949 Jordan Zane May 29, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2105387 Carolyn Roberts May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098383 Madelyn Jackson May 09, 2018, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2111229 Lillie Bowman May 13, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098455 Angel Roldan May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2108102 Roger Jackson May 12, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098869 Vanessa Gravel May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2104456 Russell B Martin May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2098347 Simon Peterson May 09, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2105076 Christa Wrigley May 11, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2100852 Karen Stearns May 10, 2018 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2151078 James Singer May 24, 2018 They're copy and pasting from the looks of it: A man starts with good health, but he is not happy with it. The result being that he does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die and then dies having never lived at all

Look at this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4438289.3780Filled with 'joined' posts by new accounts. Those posts make no sense and aren't serving as proof for any part of the campaign, they're clrearly using them as a distraction to keep bumping the thread. 190+ pages of spam in 5 days... Edit: Another bounty that seems to be doing the same https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4418531.2480Edit2: Announcement thread that appears to be utilizing spam bumping Lots of one liners from new accounts https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3213051.2360

I've been thinking that something like a shadow ban could be useful in these situations A shadow ban works only on the account you use, the spammer who has 35 accounts in his bot is unlikely to read the forum from any one of those accounts. Unless you mean their current bots won't get a banned-error and don't realize they need to switch to the next batch of accounts > that would work! I'm sure mitchell could hook up his bot to automatically flag these phrases What bot is this? This is the first time I hear about it. I would love a captcha that would make them read the rules on the forum, like typing the second word, the last character or the first of a random rule around here. I love it! It won't stop bots, but it will teach humans how to behave on the forum. I agree with (mostly) all that has been said. But, to be honest, from a couple of weeks I have begun to think that the best solution can be: 1.- Newbie's jail. Yes, I don't completely like it, but, given all the spams, newcomers, etc, I think this is the moment to implement that again. The forum is becoming a newbies-spam-fest and the place for "forever Juniors" because it is easy to create an infinite number of new accounts and just use the ctrl+C and ctrl+V buttons in your computer. If newbies can only post in one board, probably it will change it. 2.- 5 Merits to become Jr. Member. Why? When you become JR, under my proposal, you will be able to go out to the jail. If you have to earn 5 merits in order to do so, maybe the Jrs will have some quality. Just take a look at all those "forever juniors" we have in the forum: people with hundreds of posts and no merit... Of course, it can make the merit farming and trade more "popular", but also easier to detect, for all the newbies will be in a jail, and the ones receiving non-deserving merits will be easier to discover. This is just an opinion. I'm tired. I'm tired of just seeing how each day the newbies and Forever Juniors come and spam and spam the forum, endlessly. I think in this jail, also we maybe will find some deserving merits newbies and ease the work to some concerned sources.

+1 for the newbie jail, but I think it won't come back (neither as a merit jail) If the newbie jail would come back, it could raise the prices of the jr. accounts (with or without merits) so the 5 merit seems fine to escape the jail, because in this situation, the thousands of jr. member account without merits would become worthless... In order to be able to handle the situation that this change can cause, the beginner's board (or any board which will be dedicate to let the newbies spam post there) should have more mods in the beginning and more merit sources. If we concentrate the newbies into one place, mods of the other boards will have less work, so they can help in the beginner section also. Also, mods of the beginner board should give no mercy to those who copypaste or spam, because account farmers would still try to raise their activity in the beginning... I know there's no solution that will be good for everyone, but something should be done, the sooner the better...

Anyone here with more technical knowledge and insight that could be able to speculate as to whether those spamming efforts might be automated? My feeling is that it might be a possibility. It seems to me like threads will shoot back up at the top as soon as they leave the front page and it feels like this is done in automation.
I know that there are limitation in place already like a time limit. But the time limit can't exactly help in posting not being automated... Currently those accounts are being created and start posting faster than the mods can purge them. When spam responses to each spam-promoted thread are shy of 500 per day it would be hard for a handful of humans to keep deleting accounts and moreover pointless if the spammers can utilize newly created accounts.
My suggestions for the simpler solutions I can come up with: 1. Remove pumping powers from new accounts. 2. Implement reCaptcha for each post to new accounts posting in frequently spammed sub-forums.
#1 Would no longer allow spammers to use new accounts for their effors. Anyone would be able to post anything but it wouldn't have any value in 'bumping' #2 Would make it harder to automate posting. I can't be sure if anyone has managed to automate posting on bitcointalk but it would be a countermeasure for reassurance.

If you mean about the removing of the pumping power that if a newbie posts in a thread it won't jump on the top of the list (if it's sorted by latest post), this can be a solution. Unfortunately, this would impact the 'normal' newbie accounts too, and they won't get help (or it will be real hard to ask for help) if they can't get the topic to the top of the list with an important question posted in the topic. A kind of solution could be not to implement this feature on the beginner's board, to let newbies ask for help, but restrict newbies (even jr.members also) on the other boards from bumping...

Yes, there could be exceptions for certain boards.

I think putting that restriction only in Announcements (Altcoins), Tokens (Altcoins) and Bounties (Altcoins) should be enough, at least initially. There's no reason to restrict them from boards such as Technical Support, or Development and Technical Discussion.

Possibly, but they can ask whatever they need in their "newcomers" board. Anyway, seems a great solution to the spam problem: Newbie jail (it can be in more than just one board) and 5 merits required to Jrs. The point about having them in just one board is based on the willing of easing the work to mods and merit sources. From time to time you can find a great newbie making his/her best, so maybe the "newcomers" board can be a great place for merit sources to look for them. Besides, as told before, it will ease the work of many other moderators. The Bitcoin Discussion board, as well as the Politics & Society, Marketplace or the Altcoin board, are a mess. You just can't enjoy a good debate anymore in those ones, even if you try to start one soon will become a spam-fest. Something needs to be done. The forum is decaying too fast.

Surely it will prevent farming, but to implement that is kind of difficult, isn't it? Anyway, I don't see it coming. Merits, for the moment, are helping on the ranking-up matter for those who don't deserve to rank-up, but each day some new boards become a spam-fest. Beginners&Help is almost all about bounties now, as well as so many others. Even here in Meta most of the new topics are about merits, rank-up, or scam persecution (necessary as hell, given the situation), but, I don't know, I think we need to come back to good discussions and to help the people interested in knowledge instead of some bucks from their airdrops. Anyway, I don't see any action to be taken, at least for the moment, sadly.
