My learning from the hacking case makes me prefer buying a paid wallet which is safer in my opinion to secure my assets from hacking. This has been proven because what is happening right now is that my assets are safe in the wallet. I bought a nano-s wallet after hacking that previously my assets were in Myetherwallet

Copy and paste is fine if you know what you are doing and also you know well that your computer is not affected by virus otherwise it could be keylogged and your data will be stolen.
As I've experienced using a hardware wallet is really fine but not really worth it for people who just has few bucks in their address and also the need to always plug your hardware wallet for the sole reason of having the access to your wallet.
Using a desktop wallet or mobile wallet is still relatively fine if you always enable 2 factor authentication or some sort of additional security measures just incase. Honestly, I've never seen people who accidentally paste their privkey and send it to someone else though, the privkey that you copied in the clipboard will easily be replaced everytime you make a new copy of text so that's kinda rare. you could just copy some random text after copy and paste your privkey.

In my own personal opinion, it is hard to predict whether you are being hacked or not because there are really a lot of hackers nowadays, and as you said no one can afford a hardware wallet like ledger, that is why i suggest if they would split their profit in different trusted crypto wallets for them to avoid losing a lot of profit.

You can buy a new cheap smartphone or use your old one, install a version of any trusted wallet on it, throw your coins there and disconnect the phone from the Internet, as well as take out the SIM card. When the phone has no connection to the Internet it will then be a cold wallet.

I also used the address from MEW and that's been fine until now, which needs to be done to avoid phishing and viruses that can steal your private key.
Repeat, bookmark the official address to open your address.

Always hackers is searching your weekness like forced you to follow scam address, fake reward offer. Bookmark your address, write you private key or print, turn secondary security and secret question. You should use a difficult password.

Most of the time people lost their account or it getting hacked because of their fault. Hacking a wallet is not easy. Most of the time we lose things up and hackers got the chance to take it. Hardware wallets are still the beat but even just as safe as they are, keeping your private keys safe is still the right way to go.

I use stainless steel dogtags which is restaurant to fire and water to save my private keys because paper can be destroyed easily.

As long as it's still connected to the internet connection, I'm not sure my wallet will be safe from hacker attacks. The only way to be safe from hacker attacks is to use a hardware wallet like Ledger.
