What is program trading?

Wikipedia defines it as: “Program trading is a type of trading in securities, usually consisting of baskets of fifteen stocks or more that are executed by a computer program simultaneously based on predetermined conditions”

How does this work in practice?

If you read the post above about arbitrage, a profit can be realized by crystallizing a pricing disparity on different exchanges. However, this idea can be extended to pricing differences between index baskets too.

Further, the arbitrage can be extended to consider the pricing of the index and its constituent parts. Imagine then an index with 50 stocks. How can you quickly assess whether the index is under or over performing its constituents in time to take advantage of a price delta?

You need a program trading system!!
