Topps Allen & Ginter Reference Thread

Last Updated: Sept 21, 2019

This reference thread is intended to contain information about all versions of cryptocurrency cards found in the Topps Allen & Ginter baseball card series.  Some have referred to this card as Bitcoin's "Rookie Card" because it is the first time a mainstream collectible card series has recognized bitcoin or cryptocurrency.  Topps released this card as part of the 2018 Allen and Ginter baseball card series, and it is numbered 83 out of 300 within the base set.

Allen and Ginter was the Richmond, Virginia, tobacco manufacturing firm formed in 1865, and created and marketed the first cigarette cards for collecting and trading.  In 2006 Topps revived the brand and began issuing Allen and Ginter cards as part of their product lineup.  The Allen and Ginter cards are known for featuring hand painted cards of current baseball players, as well as various insert sets featuring standout athletes in other sports, pop culture icons, and historical figures.

The 2018 Allen and Ginter series was released on the week of July 18th, 2018.  Following the release of the regular 2018 Allen and Ginter series, Topps released the more limited 2018 Ginter X series boxes a few weeks later on August 8th, 2018.  The X series feature cards which have a black or dark background.

The various versions of #83 cards are listed below, and are grouped by which type of packs or boxes the cards were found.  In total, there are 25 varieties of the #83 Cryptocurrency card documented in this thread.  23 of the 25 types of cards have been identified and photographed.

The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Am really enjoying seeing all the different photos of these many rare cards produced by Topps.  Incredible 1/1 poster and of course the printing plates considered to be the holy grail of the bunch.  Very cool indeed Cool Cool Cool Cool

The gold mini parallel cards come from the "retail" box's....the reason that we havent seen many of them yet, is because those box's are the cheapest, and collectors go for the most expensive box's first.....each box comes with 1 three card clear cellophane packet of the gold parallel's.

Agree, spot on FC.  Collectors go for the most expensive cards possible first.

Thanks, I updated the OP.  Do you know the odds of finding a gold mini bordered card within a retail pack?

Well that's me out Cheesy - Maybe I should consider myself lucky that they don't have something like this on my end of the pond. Great job compiling this @hybridsole. Given the way that this has turned out and how their 1/1 auction is proceeding I think we'll be seeing plenty more crypto related cards coming out of Topps HQ.
Are total printing numbers ever disclosed for something like this? (I'm talking the standard cards).

The price inflation begins......now we'll have to buy boxs because all the dealers see this, and will hold their cards unyil they see how this all works out.  Cry

A little backstory based on my observations collecting cards as a kid:

In the late 80's / early 90's, baseball cards (and sports cards overall) skyrocketed in popularity, which led to the period known as the "inflationary period" where the companies, to keep up with demand, printed themselves out of business.  The way they took advantage of their customers by over-saturating the market, along with a players strike which cut one of the seasons short, essentially killed the entire hobby of baseball card collecting (from a mainstream point of view) after the mid 90's.

Fast forward to 2018, the card companies that have managed to survive should understand very well the issues of "hyperinflation".  And they seem to be rewarding their remaining loyal customers at this point with more special inserts, along with lower mintages to keep pace with demand.  From what I understand reading the baseball card posts on reddit and elsewhere, the Allen and Ginter stuff is not very popular overall within the baseball card collectors, so it's a niche series within a niche hobby.  Although the sports card collecting market seems to be on the rebound overall.  It makes sense why A&G would take risks like this to bring in more collectors from different communities, especially by looking to something like cryptos which would attract the younger millennial baseball fans.  We will see how this all plays out, and I expect to see fully private-key-loaded baseball cards coming in 2019 or 2020.  This might be the beginning of something big, hence the reason I've put some effort to documenting it.

Got a few 10x14s coming. What is the best way to display/protect these?  Simple picture frame?

I'm guessing if i don't open it, it'll appreciate more though, right?  can't have your cake and eat it too.

Cool. Thanks.

Any appreciation potential for the 10x14.  I see the website says numbered to 99, but also mentions may be back in stock.  A bit confused.

This is a default part of their listing format. All their products would show this when sold out regardless if limited or not

You need the printing plates to make more and the plates are gone.
