The CPU miner is just a reference miner. It was built for CPU so that everyone could try it out (not all people have ASICs to try the coin out).
You are free to build a private ASIC-compatible miner.

The founding members have been mining, current block height is around 65000.
The coin is in its infancy.
No extra mining other than this.

This is an important question: use a clean and empty Bitcoin setup for this or connect to one of the publicly available metronomes (not available yet, but will be in the future). If you are too worried, you can always check the source code and compile it yourself.
