The Cuckoo Cycle for the Proof-of-Work is interesting because it has some great properties.

1. Memory bandwidth bound.
2. More energy efficient.
3. Memory technology is very competitive, so any ASICs built in theory should not have any advantage over a GPU.

I also think it's just a damn cool algorithm! The fact that it's asymmetric (difficult to find, but easy to check) has a huge impact on verification speed.

I believe invite-only has some nice properties.

0. provides a system of identities on the blockchain. You can use an alias instead of an address to send/recieve MRT.
1. Fundamental to allow Proof-of-Growth to work. Merit essentially performs a decentralized tree based lottery typically called a Lottree. We use a variation of an algorithm called the Pachira Lottree, which provides a balance of rewarding staking/growing the network. We didn't want it to be a requirement to grow the network, so Pachira allows us to do that. It balances fairness and growth and defends the network against sybil attacks.
2. Make a valuable identity on the blockchain. We believe people will use Merit over other currencies for daily use because they have a valuable identity that allows them to transact really easily.
3. Prevent spamming.

The invites help drive proof of growth and other features of Merit.

So when a miner (using Proof of Work) finds a block, It has 20 Merit. 10 go to the miner for a reward, and 10 go into a lottery where the growth rewards are distributed. I can go into much more detail, but at a high level people also call it "growth Mining" kinda cool concept.

I'm relatively new to crypto.  (Brand new to BCT).  I have to admit that Merit is the first crypto I've ever used.  And it's relatively awesome.  

I've since gotten the chance to get some other coins, and I didn't fully appreciate Merit's usability until after.  The Desktop wallet (and even the Web Wallet) are super easy to use for a newbie like me.  (Though, I sometimes wish the Web Wallet was a little faster.)

Also, it was very easy to begin mining.
