Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

It's certainly the most convincing to date, but the author has been incredibly reckless with this man's personal details.

If this is true I think this is very irresponsible. She posts the photo, house photo, legal name, and more information of someone that wants to be anonymous. Not to mention how dangerous this would be if true. I imagine many people would do terrible things to get his private keys.

Myself and several others have sent emails to the author of this report.

This article is blatantly disrespectful, a breach of journalist integrity, and has placed this entire household in potential life-threatening danger.

I will be sending emails to voice my opinion here.

Furthermore, her entire argument is speculation that "this guy with a similar name has a profile that would not be out of line with the creator of bitcoin."  She presents no factual evidence, beyond a quote of questionable accuracy and dubious intent:

"I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it," he says, dismissing all further queries with a swat of his left hand. "It's been turned over to other people. They are in charge of it now. I no longer have any connection."

But then later, the article is refers several times to him being a private person and that he won't likely admit to it even if it's true.

What. the. hell.
No matter if true or hoax, any family living in a house which halfway fits the description will soon live in a nightmare.
People get killed for a few hundred dollars. Now imagine a single place on earth with millions and millions worth of anonymous money, and being absolutely zero prepared for anything.

Also, come on. Satoshi going through all he went through to stay anonymous, but using his real name?
Really?

I wasn't that furious to anyone for years. Thanks, Leah McGrath Goodman.

Yeah, I think it's gotta be illegal to publish personal information like that without a person's permission, so he should totally be able to sue if he thinks this is damaging to his security.

It reads like a truther article. Really immature journalism at best. A mistake that might cost someone their life at worst.

Yea, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A pseudonym takes around 8 seconds to create. This guy is so smart and anonymous that he forgot to change his name?

Maybe it's just an elaborate sting, and there are film crews lying in wait for whoever might show up.

and yet we all read it and are even here posting about it. If he did say something to the effect of ' I am no longer involved,' if that quote is real, WOW!

He gave himself away which is weird for a reclusive calculating genius.

Yea, all it would have taken was "sure lady, I'm worth hundreds of millions. And I live here. I also killed JFK."

My favorite quote about the article:

Quote
This piece is better suited to TMZ. Then again, they might have rejected it for ethical reasons.

There is never a dull moment in Bitcoin land.

Our family was terrorized by Homeland Security.  Read all about it here:  http://www.jmwagner.com/ and http://www.burtw.com/  Any donations to help us recover from the $300,000 in legal fees and forced donations to the Federal Asset Forfeiture slush fund are greatly appreciated!

Sounds like this reporter is hell bent on making her career ("the reporter that discovered Satoshi") at all costs.

The article presents ZERO evidence that this guy named Satoshi Nakamoto is the inventor of Bitcoin... NewsWeek is going to get burned on this...

But a lot of circumstantial evidence, which when put together, could make her claim legit.

If that guy disappeared or anything happened with him, she will be next.

Leah McGrath Goodman and Sharon Sergeant both have Wikipedia articles about them and the latter seems to be a well-known forensic genealogist. Newsweek seems like a reputable source as well.

On the other hand I find it hard to believe that someone who wanted to stay anonymous, especially someone who is an expert in cryptography, would use his real name in public. Many people have claimed to have "discovered" the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. Just look at his Wikipedia page for example. Here's hoping that this will be just another one like the rest.
