The relevant probabilities are:

Probability that he faked his confession. He knows about bitcoin, because of his name. He thought in the past about what he would say if a journalist shows up at his door. He despises journalists and decides to play a practical joke. Seems plausible enough for me.

I would do the same if I was called Satoshi Nakamoto.

Have you considered the possibility that:

1.  Satoshi wanted to be outed someday.  What good is being a genius without recognition?

2.  Even though the world knows that he is rich, he will be okay.  Bill Gates is the world's richest man and his life has not been compromised, yet.  Satoshi's $600 million is tiny compared to Gate's $70 billion.

3.  Even though the world knows that his invention is loosely tied to some shady activities(assassin for hire), he will be okay.  Alfred Noble never intended explosives to be used for war nor did Einstein envision his E-mc^2 formula to be used to create the atomic bomb.  At the root, only thing that Nakamoto did was create an internet cash-like currency.

4.  Satoshi has the money to provide security for his family if he cashes in some of his coins; if he is already outed anyways.

I don't think he is satoshi, even if he says "yes i am satoshi" it means nothing, it is like if i say "i'm santa claus", ye well i'm not santa claus no matter what i say  Cheesy

No, his name is Satoshi.

He just might not be the Satoshi. Wink

It appears that Newsweek has taken down the photo of his house and car off the online article. probably worried about lawsuits if the guy turns up murdered for his coin.

Gates has money in shares and in banks. He has privacy, big houses with security and travels privately.

This guy, if it is Satoshi, has $600m on a few USBs and anyone can walk up to his front door and say hello.

CEASE THIS FAGGOTRY!!!

This guy has been on the list for YEARS

This article brings NOTHING new to the scene, not one iota

another day, another "I found Satoshi" attention whore article

I am disappointed in you all.

This is not some pseudoeconomic post-modern Libertarian cult, it's an un-led, crowd-sourced mega startup organized around mutual self-interest where problems, whether of the theoretical or purely practical variety, are treated as temporary and, ultimately, solvable.
Censorship of e-gold was easy. Censorship of Bitcoin will be… entertaining.

Your thinking is foolish.
Gate's fortune isn't easy to come by/steal, while on the other hand you have Satoshi who (if he has them) holds his Bitcoins on a few USBs, HDDs or whatnot.
He has no security either.

There are very few known locations on Earth with almost half a billion dollars up for grabs. Money that can be irrevocably moved across the globe within seconds.

You could break into Bill's house and not find anything anywhere near that valuable. And stocks/cash transfers? All reversible. You're just trading on a central exchange or to another bank after all.

The reward for breaking into Bill's house and holding him at gunpoint is perhaps $100,000 at most.

I stand corrected.  He should probably start hiring security.

As for why he'd use his real name as a forum ID, well, at the earliest stages, could the inventor think it with both be so huge AND that his identity would need to be fully hidden?

I think the most obvious explanation: He didn't think it would ever get this big, at least not this fast. He only started getting nervous around the time started trading for real money, and only went off the grid when they were used to donate to wikileaks for the first time (which he was against)

I'm guessing he just expected things to progress a lot more slowly, and never thought bitcoin crest at over $1000 just 4-5 years after launch.

Yeah right. He probably hid all of his BTC on the other side of the globe. At least now he would...

I can totally see this.

Imagine he was mining at least 3000 bitcoins a day, I bet he never thought that it's kind of like mining $3,000,000 a day, all you do is wait 5 years.

Bitcoin probably took off beyond his expectations.

I am not condoning the journalist method, for revealing his ID. But there was great interest to know who created bitcoin.
Satoshi didn't expect Bitcoin to be such a success, thus anonymity was not paramount at the start of the project.

He signs as Dorian S. Nakamoto in real life.

He is a physicist with a passion for mathematics, engineering, computers..

“I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it,” he told the reporter.

Pretty good concordance that its our man.

How Ripple Rips you: "The founders of Ripple Labs created 100 billion XRP at Ripple's inception. No more can be created according to the rules of the Ripple protocol. Of the 100 billion created, 20 billion XRP were retained by the creators, seeders, venture capital companies and other founders. The remaining 80 billion were given to Ripple Labs. Ripple Labs intends to distribute and sell 55 of that 80 billion XRP to users and strategic partners. Ripple Labs also had a giveaway of under 200 million XRP (0.002% of all XRP) via World Community Grid that was later discontinued.[29] Ripple Labs will retain the remaining 25 billion"

Grin How ridiculous can Bitcoin get with this hype over Satoshi? That would just be hilarious.
