Description : A translated topic made by Steamtyme, I already asked his permission.
I've deleted this post. Reason:
I think this is where I should draw a line: translations of good posts shouldn't be reported in this topic.

Am I really going to have to set a rule saying that Newbies can't link their own post on their first day at the forum, especially if their post is all about sMerits?
Sure, you should. Real newbies are not able to know about Meta board, and have their first targets as merit hunting. If an account created, and jump instantly into meta board to beg for merits, it is not a real newbie. I am sure about that. I suggested to restrict that accounts should have more than 30-days old to be accepted.  Smiley

A newbie should not even know a merit is something that has an importance, I think a newbie can be spotted real quickly if his only purpose is to gain merit...

Just as an account with 100-200 activity and 0 merit usually isn't a real asset as well Roll Eyes or more a trolling person ....
What, it’s literally one of the first things you see in the Meta board. It’s right underneath the activity line on your account as well. It’s not like you’d have to go hunting for info on them. Are you saying that no newbies would be curious enough to learn just wtf they are?

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to"Non-custodial"

Actually, sowns, I think that you raise  a decent question, because personally I would not conclude someone is a troll merely because they have high activity and 0 merits,  yet I would presume that most active members would at least attempt to "look into the matter" in order to attempt to figure out what merits are....

On the other hand, no member needs to earn any merits if they merely want to read posts and make their own posts from time to time, and if they find little to no value in ranking up... which is not an unreasonable position, especially someone who might have an old account but logs in on an irregular basis (and maybe posts irregularly, too).

Maybe micgoossens wants to respond further, but it seems to me that he was getting at a certain suspicion that older members have with new account, and especially in recent years there has been a decently large increase in shilling, trolling and farming of btctalk accounts - and the merit system has been meant to be a vehicle that makes it more difficult, at least for the making of money off of the farming of accounts and the shit posting that had been going along with such attempts to make money off of such historical BTCtalk account farming efforts.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  There is no such thing as "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

It does not often occur, but sometime translation topics received more merits than original ones. That is ridiculous, maybe comes from local-board effects. I don't offend anyone and their time to translate topics & make contributions to their local boards (and generally for the forum), but I support your decision.

Hi LoyceV,
I appreciate your great work you have been doing for the good of newbies and others, but I'm here for a help that has no relation with your thread (a question that may sound off-topic here). One of your mates suggested me to check your thread (this one) and share my sMerits to users who report posts which may or may not deserve merits.

My thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5108474.0

My question:
Can't I keep my own thread and do it my way? I have my own measures set for the users who come and ask for merits at that thread.

You are one of the most experienced users of this forum, so can you take some time in checking my thread and let me know what's wrong with it due to which it is being moved to Off-topic repeatedly?

There is nothing wrong with your topic, that move to Off-topic because your topic does not relate to forum issues. Sometimes, such topics originally posted in Beginners & Help board, they will stay there, but if someone originally post such topics in Meta board, they will be removed to Off-topic board by forum mods for sure.

Yes you can use your own thread. You can also monitor this thread in addition to running your own thread. Or you can only monitor this thread. Or you can be on the 👀 lookout for merit deserving posts when you are reading threads you are interested in.

I'm not the one who can tell you if your thread is acceptable. If a Mod keeps moving your thread to Off-topic, and you keep moving it back to Beginners & Help, you'll have to ask the Mod why he does it. I've seen more "merit earning threads" get moved to Off-topic, which makes them useless as Off-topic is filled with spammers. But some topics (including this one) were left alone.

Please read the "unmerited" in the topic title. I count 17 merit transactions received for 3 posts made by the two of you. I haven't been very strict on posts that received some Merit already, but this is too much for the spirit of this topic.

Don't want to go off topic here Loyce, so feel free to delete this post if you like (I won't take offense).

I'm kind of disappointed this thread seems to have turned in to a sort of communal report your own posts type merit giveaway thread. When it started, it was people coming across genuinely good and non merited posts and linking them here because they had no merits of their own to give. Now it is largely people just linking their own posts, some of which are barely a few hours old and many of which have already been merited.

How would you feel about a "no self posts" rule? There are plenty of other merit giveaway threads across the forum you can report your own posts in.

I don't really want to stop users from reporting their own good post, as I believe there are (some) users who's posts are really overlooked by Merit sources.

I'll keep track (starting now): if there are no unmerited good posts left that get reported by other users because they're out of sMerit, that means this thread has served it's purpose.
I'll give it a few weeks to see what happens.

This Post brought me here, I see that there isn't a lot of action going on here, allow me to point something out from my personal point of view, which could very likely be the same for some other members.

The report format is a "bit" of work , i feel bad saying this, but it really is a bit annoying and time consuming, i know you need the topic to look neat and that the format makes it easy for merit sources, but I don't tend to want to spend the time doing all that instead of simply posting the post/topic link, at the same time , i don't want to be the only person who doesn't follow the format.

After all this is a voluntary work,IMO it should be done with minimal efforts for it to survive, sorry if this is a bit off-topic.

@mikeywith @ETFbitcoin: I made it a bit more "optional" and took something in between ETFbitcoin's first and second template:
Make it easy for Merit Sources, use this format:
Code:
[b][url=https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1234.msg1234#1234]TITLE[/url][/b]
Description : <optional, but either description or category must exist>
Category : <optional> {guide, opinion, news, question, technical question, technical answer, share technical improvement/upgrade, etc.}
Section : <optional>
