You can actually do both, practice to win and be consistent in winning or practice on how to minimize your loses and stay discipline while gambling even if you are losing. When you master this, it will certainly not gonna put your finances at risk as you'll enjoy gambling regardless of the outcome.

Yes, practice makes perfect. I am sure we can practice controlling ourselves because that is the important thing for us to have control.
It will be too difficult to do that thing for new people, and it will be hard to control themselves and stay discipline, especially if they win for some rounds.
Maybe they can use smaller money to gamble while learning to control themselves, so when they can master the lesson, they can start to use medium amounts to gamble.
But that will for some time before they can master both lessons, and I do not think they can survive for a long term to do that lesson because the greediness will be behind them.

It won't be sustainable if that is your only stream of income, the problem with gamblers by profession that do not last long in the game is that they do not have any other steady stream of income be it passive or active which can help them in the times that they do not earn a lot of money when they are gambling.

I have a friend that does Sports betting full-time and he specialize in horse racing, because he has been doing that for most of his life. He gets some inside information from the Jockeys that gives him a bit of edge over the other gamblers, but he rarely win something big.

I also have friends doing part-time Poker tournaments, but they say they will never do that full-time. The competition is just too tough and it only last for a few years. (Younger talented players are constantly pushing older players out of the circle and sponsors also look for young and new talent)

No I don't think so, in casino gambling game I'm ok it's very hard to win on the long run because the probabilities are fixed and remain the same, but in activities where probabilities move like in sport betting you can win on the long run and even earn your life with it if you are able to better evaluate the probabilities than the bookmakers(and the edge they take).

Yes, that is a very high risk to take, especially because you are relying on others skills and mindset to make profit. We never know for real how the players of a team are feeling physically and psychologically during a match, so everything can happens and someone's financial life shouldn't depend on that.
