I think the midfielder position is where he wants the most, but if the team's need is urgent to achieve victory then he must be willing to become a left back. He was a striker, but as we can see he has a low scoring in any clubs he played e.g. Rennes, Real Madrid and France. So I don't think he's used to play as an attacking position, he's better in ball control and tackle, so defensive midfielder should be his best position.

Anyway don't forget he also able to play as a goalkeeper, we only need to wait his career as a manager.
