I have banks of unmodified Gridseeds running on Windows 7 with the girnyau's gridseed fork of cgminer compiled for Windows by Sang with his config settings at 888MHz which are getting as good or better 24hr averages on the pool side... 350Kh/s to 360Kh/s over 40 units over 24 hours.

I'm going to let them run overnight and see how the average looks in the morning.
Then I'll back them down to 850 clock and see how they do over another 24 hours.
That's the breaks in R&D. You win some, you lose some.
There are a few others trying these mods out too.
Let's wait and see what happens.

I forgot to mention folks, that they were down for around 3.5 hours this afternoon due to the usual USB burp that occurs without regularity while I was out in the field doing my usual miracle work for a customer.
When I got back, I of course reset and fired them back up. Perhaps this is why the current results? I let them run another 3+ hours to make up for the glitch so I may have been a bit pre-mature in posting the results. It's not an actual straight uninterrupted 24 hour period. My bad! Sorry about that! DOH!

so anyone tried swopping out the oscillator crystal (x6 tink its marked no?) for a higher frequency one?

alos whats wiht the reistor values, i mean where did the 39k reisitor value come from? could it be higher?Huh (in line wiht chip u9 upo1111)

and laslty has anyone got or know where to get hold of the data sheet for the 2-bit VID buck converter chip u2, (up1509)

and for ref r211 is labeled a 3.65k -1% 04 and R212 10k 1% 04

And final why do the solder bridge to short out vid0 and vid1 ? then replace the matching reistor. Why not just replace the corresponding resistor to vid0 open and vid1 open? which i believe would be R139 default value set at about 22k. )

or did i miss something.

i try but i dont have the values and compents sizes -at the moment - to try.

Are you an electronics engineer? I'm interested in any hack that works well and is the easiest one to do.
I found one other shortcut that negates the need for the pencil mod part. I'm still testing its results.
So far, 135% to 150% stable gain in overall hash rate has been achieved at 1000MHz.
1100MHz throws less red nonce HW errors but it's still too much.
1200MHz stable is still pretty much impossible at this time with current mods.
PM me if you'd like to correspond and we can figure something else out together.

thanks ill take that as compliement - electronics engineer - but no. i did study appplied physics wiht computer over 12 years ago. didnt really get into it as a carreer started travelling instead. now ive forgot more than i know. still know the basics and beyond and dabble in it as a hobby - heck been into the electronics and computer since a kid wiht my dad. assembled a circuit at 5 and wrote a compuiter program on spectrum 48k at 7. ahh back in the days. problem i now have is though that i live in finland and dont know where tyo get most of the stuff from - language also an issue - so i result to online purcahses most of time which takes time to delivery. heck if i had the parts the crystal would be swopped out now along wiht the reistors. heck im itching to use my new rework station. oh and have things moved forward so much in 12 years. so im a bit behind. but i catch up well - just wiht coding you know the basics you can pick it up and understand it. so anyone know a good site where i good hunt for the datasheets for the chips?

Do you live in Helsinki or close by? In Helsinki (or you can just order online) there's at least this shop for electronics that I know of: http://www.partco.biz/verkkokauppa/index.php?language=en .

As soon as someone finds a way to replace the pencil mod with resistor or something (and/or when wolfey2014 reveals the new, better mod), I think I'll try to mod one of my gridseeds as well (and then the rest if I don't brick that one..Smiley

Same here. My unmodified miner gets poolside results of anywhere from 250-500 kh/s. Using the 500 kh/s spike to make any claims doesn't make a lot of sense. My average rate is somewhere around 360-370.

As has been said many times in this thread, a faster hashrate does not necessarily mean better overall performance. The rest of the miner needs to be taken into account. I can think of several issues off the top of my head that would prevent improved performance (and even worse performance) with overclocking. Even the firmware could become an issue (ever played an old DOS game that didn't have an FPS limiter on a modern machine?).

I'm waiting to see what the numbers look like after another 24 hours.

I'm waiting to see what the numbers look like after another 24 hours.

There are no problem or performance issues at higher frequencies, except if HW error rate is increased. I'am using 230400 serial baudrate and the hashrate/freq ratio is constant.

As in black square, not only the 24 hr hash rate is same as running at 850Mhz, but also the pay out is same for LTC. ~0.06/24 hr.
Coz i also mined past 2-3 days litecoin & my pay out is similar.

I respect you wolfey for doing great work, helping others.
But one thing i cannot understand why u hate cgminer or bfgminer & like cpuminer too much.

Since i read your past posts also, i came to know that it took you too much time to know how to run cpuminer, so now u dont want to run any other miner, as you fear, it will waste your time.
Running cgminer is very simple, i dont know abt bfgminer.
but cgminer requires zadig_2.1.0 usb driver. you can install the usb driver in a SEPARATE system & run just ONE miner in cgminer.

Use girnyau's cgminer, because it contains per chip statistics and per chip frequency adjustment in 12.5MHz steps. (And OC supported up to 1400MHz.)

Thanks for your comments.
I'm giving very strong consideration to changing over to something else for the same reasons.
So I can see 'client side' results and have better control over 'overdrive' frequency Wink
This has become more important now due to the mods I've made.

I don't recall it taking me very long to figure out and start using cpuminer. At that time, I was totally green and a complete 100% newb to this game. I started this from scratch! Had never mined in my life but within the first day I was up and running within a few hours. So that's why I fell in love with cpuminer,,,,so to speak. Wink

I saw all the convolution going on with cg and bfg miner and it scared me away from trying it for more reasons than one. Just my personal preference of course. I know others out there love cg and bfg miner too. To each their own. That's how I see it.

My opinions are 'my' opinions and anyone should keep this in mind when reading my/others 'opinions'. Just different viewpoints being expressed by different 'beings' on here. This isn't the borg, eh? It's not a collective single mind, is it.....  Cheesy Resistance is futile! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Kidding!  Grin

I am happy to share my successes and failures along the way. That's life and I am happy and honored to share mine with you all.

That isn't what the results indicate so far. If you're running at 1000 MHz, you should be hashing at around 420 kh/s. The stats so far indicate that even with no errors the performance isn't noticeably better than an unmodified unit. There could be a number of reasons for that.

That being said, you can't make the claim that there are no other issues when overclocking without knowing how every part of the system works. If any part of the system is being saturated or starved, increasing chip speed isn't going to help (and may even make things worse depending on the software/firmware/architecture).

Again, hashrate does NOT equal performance. Hashrate is a measure of how fast the chips are hashing, not how much work is actually being done. That's why you need to look at the whole system when you're trying to improve performance. More hashing power is pointless if the problem is actually IO, for example.

If after another 24 hours elapse and the performance is still about the same, then other parts of the system may need to be investigated for potential bottlenecks.

OK.. Before I start modding some units... It would be nice to run these GDS miners stable for weeks with no crashing...but I cant even get 24hrs...

On linux (xunbutu 13.10)  I have noticed:

1. A 10 port hub into USB 3.0 > Much Quicker Crash than USB 2.0  (why?)
2. A 10 port hub daisy chained into a 10 port hub into USB > Crash and "zombie" errors after 4 hours
3. Running all night at 800mhz... half are OFF... then crash... WTF Am i doing wrong?  I can mod until I can make them stable.
4. Once I get a crash on one unit with "OFF" status...the whole cgminer kicks off and stops...

The most stable situation I have come up with so far:

One 10 port hub, into 1 MOBO at 750mhz. 

Someone please tell me WTF...

Or have you done something else?
What are the frequency steps that can be done with cgminer 3.7.2?

Is it easy to install and configure compared to cpuminer?

I'm seeing much better results at my pool on this latest trial run.

As soon as someone finds a way to replace the pencil mod with resistor or something (and/or when wolfey2014 reveals the new, better mod), I think I'll try to mod one of my gridseeds as well (and then the rest if I don't brick that one..Smiley

thanks i checked them out bookmarked for fuure but for a few smd reistors im not paying nearly 10 euros shipping. i can get a couple of hunderd of different types shipping from over sea - uk - within a week for less. typical.

Same here. My unmodified miner gets poolside results of anywhere from 250-500 kh/s. Using the 500 kh/s spike to make any claims doesn't make a lot of sense. My average rate is somewhere around 360-370.

As has been said many times in this thread, a faster hashrate does not necessarily mean better overall performance. The rest of the miner needs to be taken into account. I can think of several issues off the top of my head that would prevent improved performance (and even worse performance) with overclocking. Even the firmware could become an issue (ever played an old DOS game that didn't have an FPS limiter on a modern machine?).

I'm waiting to see what the numbers look like after another 24 hours.

There are no problem or performance issues at higher frequencies, except if HW error rate is increased. I'am using 230400 serial baudrate and the hashrate/freq ratio is constant.

That isn't what the results indicate so far. If you're running at 1000 MHz, you should be hashing at around 420 kh/s. The stats so far indicate that even with no errors the performance isn't noticeably better than an unmodified unit. There could be a number of reasons for that.

That being said, you can't make the claim that there are no other issues when overclocking without knowing how every part of the system works. If any part of the system is being saturated or starved, increasing chip speed isn't going to help (and may even make things worse depending on the software/firmware/architecture).

Again, hashrate does NOT equal performance. Hashrate is a measure of how fast the chips are hashing, not how much work is actually being done. That's why you need to look at the whole system when you're trying to improve performance. More hashing power is pointless if the problem is actually IO, for example.

If after another 24 hours elapse and the performance is still about the same, then other parts of the system may need to be investigated for potential bottlenecks.

Again, there are no bottleneck or performance issue.
