There is a reason they are called major altcoins, and they have survived for long and keeps maintaining their services and products to remain at the top. Other altcoins what have they done to improve? It is better to hold a token which has survived many bear markets with solid platform than a one which the future is still uncertain. An altcoin like ETH, is the first altcoin which is worthy to be in ones portfolio and it is a major altcoin and it is not losing its value as well. Anyone telling you to look past major altcoins for long term holding is not telling you the truth. If you aren't ready to hold altcoins then hold BTC that's better.

When it comes to Investing, it is always good to start by checking out what you want or in this case the type of altcoin you want, and then studying all you can. Most advising people about the type of altcoin to invest doesn't always end well especially when it doesn't go as planned with respect to the nature of the crypto space. Nevertheless, if am to point out my opinion, major altcoins aren't losing value rather they are still dominating and thus good for long term investment; such major altcoins are Ethereum (ETH), Stellar (XLM), Binance Coin (BNB), ADA and maybe LTC. Lastly, holding BTC is also a good investment call.

That's true only lunatic people will risk their money on those new projects. Almost all of new projects being introduced even at IEO of major exchange still go down and its really not that feasible unless the project can sustain value and liquidity. But this market is full of clowns who keeps playing with this.

major coins will always get fund allocation frome each traders and investors. so we will always see high liquidity on it, and price tend to rise slowly. investors will try to get as much as they can major coins in their bag when its price dumped in bearish market condition. so far major coins will get high portion our fund than coins outside top 10 cmc.

There is no argument there is always a time when the market dumps and all coins not only major altcoins will be hit but what signifies or shows how valuable some coins are is their ability to regain their price when there is a positive growth in the market. Ethereum for example dumped but this year it has regained its value although not as expected, but better than it was. Therefore, in my own way of doing things, Ethereum as a major altcoin is good for long term.

Be sure to choose the best on the top 50. I'm telling you that it's a wise idea but don't get into that idea because they're all in that top number. Not everything that you can see there is worth of your time and money to invest. I see some good long term altcoins there but some of them are heavily out of my choice for some reasons. Imho most of the altcoins won't make it through this decade with positive value gain results.
So you got to make sure what you are investing in - we are not in 2018 and market is showing signs of maturity not following btc all the way.
Each project has potential ,but you should believe in their results.

Long term holding is simply for major altcoins or those altcoins which are having large popularity such as ethereum and ripple. Just observe how these coins' market value behave. The market price as far as my observations, are a bit stagnant at a certain point. Although there are price downfall but in general, prices do play at a certain point.
 The market price of the new ones or those which are included on minor altcoins' market value drops upon being listed on exchanges and that simply proves how popularity affects the market value of a crypto not only altcoin. The prices of these cryptos moves a lot in a downward motion unlike those of the 'big guns' of this industry.
