Looks like we have six members interested in a fantasy football league, we're 60-75% there.

Here're the members who expressed interest so far:

@figmentofmyass
@nutildah
@bbc.reporter
@South Park
@tyKiwanuka
@DireWolfM14

I'm calling out some of the members who were active in the Essential NFL thread throughout last season.  Maybe we can entice two or four of them to join as well.

@Hueristic
@wheelz1200
@DaveF
@Gyfts
@rdbase
@ralle14
@morvillz7z

Shit I didn't even know about this thread!

I'm in but only if it is a NON PPR format.

I've played in a few leagues and PPR ruins it for me, I feel it takes alot of the fun of finding new talent completely out of the equation.

Looking forward to my Pats getting their Asses reamed this year! Grin Grin Grin

Thanks for the ping @DireWolfM14, not sure how i missed the discussion but you can count me in.

I think we can get 10, but if we need 1-2, i remember ChiBitCTy had a fantasy league going on, maybe some of those guys might be interested?

I was in that league (it started as the Monero league) but they went full PPR last year so I didn't play.

Just an FYI guys after playing in a few leagues I've learned that you should make a rule that this is an invite only league so a few straggler accounts that collud cannot just join. Its a shame but there are lowlifes that will ruin a good league for a few pennys.

BTW, My absolute most Hated QB is Cam Newton. I literally could not have picked a qb I would want less on the Pats!
He has no clue what the word team means.

As some of you might have heard, there are some MLB players that opted out of the shortened 2020 season. Only a few until now, but I expect more to come. Zimmerman from the Nationals stated the following:

Quote
I have a 3-week-old baby,'' Zimmerman wrote. "My mother has multiple sclerosis and is super high-risk; if I end up playing, I can pretty much throw out the idea of seeing her until weeks after the season is over. There's a lot of factors that I and others have to consider. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer; it's everybody's individual choice
Source: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29384355/nationals-ryan-zimmerman-joe-ross-opt-2020-season

I think this is also a scenario that is very likely to happen in NFL and something that could put the NFL season in jeopardy, if you have too many players refusing to play or some bigger names opting out.

the opt out scenario is basically already guaranteed for the NFL too. i wonder when this hard deadline will be:

Quote
Before the opt-out goes into effect, several things still have to be figured out. One big one is when players would have to opt out by. According to NFL.com, general managers around the league were told this week that the opt-out will come with a hard deadline. Although the date for that deadline hasn't been set, any player who wants to sit out 2020 would have to declare themselves out before the deadline.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-reportedly-intends-to-give-all-players-the-choice-to-sit-out-the-entire-2020-season/

naturally, any fantasy draft should take place after that deadline.....

He has no clue what the word team means.

Lol, I wholeheartedly agree.  Absolutely one of my least favorite quarterbacks ever.  It'll be interesting to see if his personality clashes with Belichick.  Personally, I expect some fireworks from him if the Pats don't do well, if only to get his name mentioned by the media.  Roll Eyes

In other news; I read in a local rag recently that Belichick is writing off a quarterback this year because he anticipates an opportunity to trade for Garoppolo before the 2021 season.  Unless Garoppolo transforms into superman this year, his contract will be too expensive for the 9ers in 2021, and will likely need renegotiating.  Of course that always leaves the door open for a trade.  Further fueling the speculation is the fact that Kirk Cousins' contract with Minnesota expires this season, and Shanahan and Cousins would both welcome a reunion.  Knowing Belichick he'll position himself to take either Garoppolo or Cousins.  I would surmise that both are capable of doing great things in his offense.

Interesting thought as the Pats are not known for paying the big bucks so it would depend on the size of the contract.

There were rumours since some days that there are some more things brewing in Washington than just a name change. And now it seems there is a little earthquake happening with an article published by the Washington Post. Since the article is behind a paywall, I will quote the top headline from another site:

Quote
A group of 15 female former employees of the NFL’s Washington Redskins accused top team executives of sexual harassment and verbal abuse in a damning report on the team’s internal culture on Thursday.

I was hoping they would start the season without an actual name settled upon, and would have blank grey helmets and uniforms, and the announcers would call them "The Team Formerly Known as the Washington Redskins," and the fans would summarily shorten that to ForeSkins.

It could happen.

The NFL has sent to the NFLPA the proposal so players can opt-out of the 2020 season by August 1, it seems the date is still not confirmed and it is possible the NFLPA could ask for a bigger window of opportunity for players to opt-out but it seems the parts are getting close to an agreement on this issue, also once a player opt-outs there is no possibility to return and must sit out the whole season and players will not earn any of the money owed of their base salary.

the redskins are now known as the "Washington Football Team".

Pretty lame, but it's just temporarily, they had to rush a bit Grin I would have liked Washington Team Football better, since it makes for a nicer abbreviation.

I'm wondering: how do you use the coronavirus mess (introduction of unknowns and special circumstances) to get an edge when placing a bet? I'm curious to know if you've thought about it.
With reduced preparation/pratice time, this will definitely be advantageous for teams like the Chiefs, who were able keep everyone. If you have a lot of young and new players and maybe a new QB on top of that, you are doomed imo, since it takes a lot of time to get everyone in sync (and NFL ready for the young players).

Found these two interesting tweets regarding this topic:

Source: https://twitter.com/FB_FilmAnalysis/status/1285732609595772932

Source: https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1285578100659621893

Raiders are 1.83 to win @Carolina in week1, but well, the Raiders are the Raiders and they have their own issues I guess, so probably not that interesting. What is maybe more interesting is the regular season wins, where the line is 5.5. Last season they were 5-11 and that NFC South has gotten even more brutal. Carolina has way more winnable games in first few match-ups of the seaons imo, but that is when they still should struggle a lot:

Raiders
@Tampa
@Chargers
Cardinals
@Falcons
Bears

After that:

@Saints
Falcons
@Chiefs
Tampa

Lions
@Vikings
Broncos
@Packers
@Redskins
Saints

Put "sure losses" in red. If they are lucky enough to win 2 of the first 6 games, they would still need to get 4 wins from the next 10, which looks very unlikely imo. They still have CMC, but lost Kuechly on defense and I have my doubts about Bridgewater making any impact. Odds around 2.00 are probably not very attractive for single longterm bet, but if I find some other good season bets to parlay, I might include this one.

Some more well known players have already opted out in Dont'a Hightower and Marcus Cannon. Both big blows for the Pats, while RB Brandon Bolden, FB Danny Vitale and G Najee Toran will also not suit up in 2020 season for them.

Other players to opt out:

Thomas (Ravens)
Duvernay-Tardif (Chiefs)
Warmack (Seahawks)
Canady (Cowboys)
Brantley (Football Team^^)
Peko (Broncos)
Smith (Ravens)

With the latest news from the Miami Marlins in MLB, I expect a wave of opt-outs in the next days. Not looking good all in all and I find it kind of non-exciting to watch NFL, when probably a lot of teams are weakened by core players opting out.

Funny that my first thought was that the XFL is really screwed.
Talk about unlucky, as soon as they launch again this hits.
The NFL will weather this but they may not.

The NFL and the NFLPA have finally signed the revised CBA and there is finally a deadline for when players can opt-out the 2020 season, they have until Thursday at 4 PM to do so, previously it was stated players will have 7 days after the CBA was signed but NFL pressured to shorten the time span, however there are two exceptions to the opt-out deadline, if a player receives a new diagnosis that puts him at a high risk or if a family member gets seriously infected because of COVID19 or something similar.

Everything is lining up for this season to be one of worsts for NE, they have lost now 8 players, the most of any team, and several of them are key players and when you add no certainty at the QB position, no preseason and probably a new offensive system this does not seems as if it will end well.

Add to this that the Jets have lost two of their best players in Adams/Mosley and the AFC East is looking even more pathetic. The Bills have only lost Lotulelei as of now, but still they are only 2.00 (=50%) to win the division, while Patriots are 2.60 (38%). Both were 2.30 before, which I found a bit weird already and now with NE losing so many players (Chung is also out) on top of all the other problems you mentioned, these odds for the Bills look very tempting. But I won't place any bet yet I think - who knows what will happen in the next days. I even find the 9.00 for the Dolphins somehow sexy.

And the positive news, since we have a lot of fans of it in here: The XFL is back - most likely Cool

don't worry, it's all part of bill belichick's master plan.

they gotta replace tom brady, right? Grin

in all seriousness it looks terrible for the pats, but there's nobody who i'd expect to adapt and turn things around in this situation better than belichick.

66 player have opted out of the season after yesterdays deadline passed. I think the teams might lose some more players here and there in the upcoming weeks and during the season. I sorted them division-wise, taken from here:

New England Patriots: LB Dont'a Hightower, FB Dan Vitale, RB Brandon Bolden, OL Najee Toran, WR Marqise Lee, OL Marcus Cannon, S Patrick Chung, TE Matt LaCosse
Buffalo Bills: DT Star Lotulelei, CB E.J. Gaines
Miami Dolphins: WR Allen Hurns, WR Albert Wilson
New York Jets: OL Leo Koloamatangi, LB C.J. Mosley, WR Josh Doctson

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens: KR De'Anthony Thomas, OL Andre Smith
Cincinnati Bengals: DT Josh Tupou, OT Isaiah Prince
Cleveland Browns: G Drew Forbes, T Drake Dorbeck, DT Andrew Billings, G Malcolm Pridgeon, OL Colby Gossett
Pittsburgh Steelers: none

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans: DT Eddie Vanderdoes
Tennessee Titans: OL Anthony McKinney
Indianapolis Colts: LB Skai Moore, DB Rolan Milligan, DB Marvell Tell
Jacksonville Jaguars: EDGE Lerentee McCray, CB Rashaan Melvin, DT Al Woods

AFC WEST

Kansas City Chiefs: OL Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, RB Damien Williams, OT Lucas Niang
Denver Broncos: DT Kyle Peko, RT Ja'Wuan James
Las Vegas Raiders: DB D.J. Killings, DE Jeremiah Valoaga, LB Ukeme Eligwe
Los Angeles Chargers: none

NFC EAST

Dallas Cowboys: CB Maurice Canady, WR Stephen Guidry, FB Jamize Olawale
Philadelphia Eagles: WR Marquise Goodwin
New York Giants: OL Nate Solder, WR Da'Mari Scott, CB Sam Beal
Washington Football Team: LB Josh Harvey-Clemons, DE Caleb Brantley

NFC NORTH

Green Bay Packers: WR Devin Funchess
Minnesota Vikings: DT Michael Pierce
Chicago Bears: DT Eddie Goldman, S Jordan Lucas
Detroit Lions: DT John Atkins, WR Geronimo Allison, C Russell Bodine

NFC SOUTH

Carolina Panthers
: LB Christian Miller, LB Jordan Mack
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: OT Brad Seaton
New Orleans Saints: TE Jason Vander Laan, TE Cole Wick
Atlanta Falcons: none

NFC WEST

San Francisco 49ers: WR Travis Benjamin, OL Shon Coleman
Seattle Seahawks: OL Chance Warmack
Arizona Cardinals: OL Marcus Gilbert
Los Angeles Rams: OT Chandler Brewer

Think it could have been worse, apart from NE of course and the Browns lost a couple of O-Line players, but I am not very familiar with them; in general O-Liners opted out the most (maybe due to being overweight the most ?). There are 22 voluntary opt-outs, 8 high-risk and 36 with no reasoning given. Bring the season on, I am not opting out Tongue

And the positive news, since we have a lot of fans of it in here: The XFL is back - most likely Cool

The Rock is behind it now, it may actually have a chance of survival.

I had hopes for the league originally, but then Covid fucked their season over good.  I don't know how the NFL is going to fair with the pandemic and the political divisiveness they've engaged in.  It seems like now is as good of a time as any for an alternate league to stake a foothold.
