i wont say mandatory but if you can afford to hold it long term, might be a good decision. as eth 2.0 is upcoming, the possible rise is very imminent. i think i understand the position of the OP as if he is really a newbie in crypto, the hesitations are really unsurprising. he has limited knowledge on how crypto market works and if he is relying his savings on this investment, he has all the angles to worry.

POS is not the only update that will have bought by ethereum but serenity will have so many updates to make ethereum chain will much more scalable to handle a lot of transaction at once.

for me Ethereum is still good to hold, because altcoins are still bullish, don't worry, and keep putting on a stop loss,

Eth is indeed a reliable altcoin to invest in because it is already a well-established coin. However I dont recommend to go all in with eth, diversifying is still best if we invest. There are many good alts existing nowadays we just need to do our part as an investor by conducting a research. Include bitcoin and eth in your portfolio and add other alts that has potential.
