From Stephen Hawking to Matrix: Making Science Fiction Come True (1)

Whether it’s science fiction novels or the Matrix trilogy, to “go anywhere with thoughts like a butterfly” or even to attain immortality has long been mankind’s dream. But from a neuroscience and neural engineering perspective, we are still far from this goal, the reason being our knowledge about the human brain, signal transmission and, especially, information coding technologies are rather limited.

The Significance of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Technologies

There is a famous memoir titled Le Scaphandre et le Papillon, whose author is Jean Dominique Bauby, the editor-in-chief of French ELLE magazine. One day Bauby woke in his bed and found he couldn’t move his body or make a sound. All he could do was to blink his left eye. Language therapist Henriette was taking care of him. When Bauby wants to thank her, he needs to blink his eyes five times while Henriette reads him the French alphabet so that he could spell out the French word Merci. Bauby suffered a sudden stroke and lapsed into a coma. He was physically paralysed with what is known as locked-in syndrome. Blinking his left eye is his only way of communicating with the world, but his brain and mental activities are fully functional. One can only imagine his loneliness and despair. Miraculously, by blinking his left eye Bauby completed his memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon, the film adaption of which won many awards. This is why BCI technologies can be tremendously useful. One day patients like Bauby will no longer have to like in a diving bell. They will be able to communicate with the world freely through neural activities, and their thoughts can break free of their bodies’ limits and fly like butterflies.

How Brain Wave Works

Brain wave electrical signal is caused by the electrophysiological activities of the brain’s nervous tissue on the cerebral cortex. Therefore, to better understand how the brain wave works, it will be beneficial to first understand the brain’s anatomy. The cerebral cortex, also known as the cerebral mantle takes up a third of the brain. It is mainly responsible for cognition and emotions. The cerebral cortex is divided by three longitudinal fissures into five parts: frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe and cerebellum.

The frontal lobe is located in the front of the brain. It is mainly responsible for concentration and short-term memory. To the front of the occipital lobe is the parietal lobe, which is responsible for sensory information, e.g. touch, spatial awareness, etc. Underneath the lateral sulcus of the cerebral hemisphere is the temporal lobe, which is responsible for processing information, e.g. sight, hearing, etc. and plays an important role in long-term memory. The occipital lobe is located in the back of the cranium and functions as a visual processing centre. The insula lobe is folded deep within the lateral sulcus. Research has shown that it is related to not only emotions and awareness but also motor control, self-awareness, interpersonal relationship, etc. At the same time, mental illnesses have also been found to be related to the insula lobe.

Electrical signals during brain activities can be recorded in EEG, which reflects the totality of the activities of nerve cells. The electric signal produced by one single nerve cell is rather weak. Therefore, the cerebral cortex can generate brain waves of different frequencies. The characteristics of these electric activities reflect the different statuses of the brain.

The electrical activities of the cerebral cortex include spontaneous activities and induced activities. Spontaneous electric activities are caused by people’s different emotional states and correspond to different brain wave patterns, while induced electric activities are caused by external triggers.

The Birth of BCI Technologies

Scientific research into BCI dates back to 1963. Doctor Grey Walter of Burden Neurological Institute in the UK used the latest EEG technology of the time to play a joke on his patients. These patients who were suffering from epilepsy had electrodes placed in their brains close to the cerebral cortex to determine the location of their illness by monitoring their nervous activities. Since the electrodes are relatively large, the record resistance is low. Although the electrical activities of a single nervous cell couldn’t be recorded, the field potentials of the collective activities of nervous cells around the electrodes could. These patients will wear the electrodes for a week or two in the hospital. Once on a whim, Dr. Walter secretly connected these electrodes to a field potential converter while the patients were watching landscape photo slides. This field potential converter could use the field potential signals of the motor cortex of a patient’s brain to control the projector. Then a miracle happened: Every time a patient was about to change slides, the projector knows his mind before he put his hand on the button. This is the first time BCI technology happened in the real world. Brain nerve signals were collected and converted into electrical signals to control external devices.

This experiment was truly ahead of its time. Before, such technologies had only appeared in science fiction movies. What lay behind this joke was Doctor Walter’s exploration into the deepest secrets of the brain. He discovered that the electrical activities of the brain are related to brain activities such as attention and expectation. Prior to this, brain electrical activities only referred to the rhythmic fluctuations (Alpha Waves) that happen ten times every second. Through these fluctuations, people could deduce the brain is at a state of alarm but not predict any specific thoughts. Doctor Walter is an excellent engineer. He used multiple averaging and denoising technologies to obtain the purest brain waveform since the invention of EEG: Event-Related Potential (ERP). Since then, scientists have used ERP to conduct quantitive research on not only how the brain reacts to external visual and audio stimuli, but also the cognitive process of the brain. And a new window to brain research has been opened.

New and improved! We just released an updated version of MANTA Mainnet Miner Deployment Guide!

MANTA Mainnet Miner Deployment Guide

1.      About MANTA

MANTA is a distributed auto-machine learning platform built on the Matrix Mainnet. It is based on an auto-machine learning application (Auto-ML) and its deployment system. It utilises Auto-ML Internet search algorithms to locate an accurate and low-latency deep model and accelerates the searching process through distributed computing.
Currently, you may deploy MANTA either on a Matrix miner or independently. After completing the deployment, you may access the web services trained by the software through public IP address loading port 8502. When MANTA starts operating a new business, the MANTA service platform will keep a record of all users’ public IPs and wallet addresses. The platform will assign learning tasks to users and encourage them to complete the tasks with rewards sent to their wallet addresses........................

Is there any 🤩bounty🤩 or 🤩airdrop🤩 sir? lol.
Really sad to see MAN team members posting over 20 pages for years with zero fucks given by the community.
I can't tell what you are trying to achieve by posting updates and some NPCs (non playable characters aka non-existing team members, lol) praising the CEO or whatever?

Though I can relate with the frustration, after all I am an ignored dev* with an ignored marvel of a token I launched to change the world.

Back to the project, so sad to see such world fucking tech aka ai from the movie The Matrix has 93 validator nodes after 2 years. 🤣

Ps, I have an offer, if you pay me 1000$ I will go and dig deep about this project and then write an honest long review containing at least 100000 characters, it could be a good third party audit, come on now  help a fellow dev here would you?😉

*: that's a lie.

I don't see anything wrong in updating this thread with all the latest improvements of the project.  It keeps the community updated of the projects development. AI related are new I would say, perhaps it is part of the reason why there is no much attention from the community. People are moved by the trends and hype especially in crypto.

We Hear You.

To help our mining community to see if a node has been blacklisted, The Dev has come up with a page listing blacklisted validators and miners. It is intuitive and open for suggestion.

Alternatively, you can query through below

Blacklisted Validator:getMatrixStateByNum('block_produce_blacklist’)

Blacklisted Miner:getMatrixStateByNum('base_power_blacklist’)

                                                                                                                      December AMA is LIVE!

CEO Owen TAO answered questions from the community.
Also CEO Owen wrote a Chinese character for the upcoming new year event.

Eric: Hello Matrixians Merry Christmas today is 27th of December I think it’s not too late for Christmas greeting and I’m sure you have watched our video with CEOs message meaning the message from our Ceo Owen yeah oven how are you ?and your Christmas holiday ?

Owen: there yeah Hi everybody I spent my Christmas holiday at home yeah because my family got the COVID-19.

Eric: Okay sorry to hear that.

Owen: Yeah yeah and but everyone is okay right now yeah. Hi everyone happy Merry Christmas and happy new year yeah.

Eric: Okay good thanks thanks Owen yeah so the monthly to the
Ama. Today we have eight questions let’s start with the number one from Dougfunny I think this question would be interesting for all Matrixians.
“How many people are working on the Matrix ? Are you hiring ?”

Owen: Yeah yeah right now our the whole team of Matrix is about 20 people yeah and about three quarters of our teams working for the development and our blockchain team has had six people and our ai team had eight people yeah.

Eric: Okay clear. okay thanks Dougfunny. I think it’s a clear answer to you and also to all Matrixians who would like to know how many people are working on Matrix. and the second part of question is are we hiring yes of course we are hiring and we have a form which is about the global recruitment we we’re recruiting the technical writers, admins, product ones, the smart contract etc as well so as long as you share the visions as ours you’re welcome to send us a note dealing you know what kinds of strength do you have and what kinds of position you have you want to apply for and your expectation I mean in terms of contribution and also in terms of reward.yeah, yes we do we are hiring yes. Second question from diffusesoup
“ When is gpu mining going to live ? This will start to add computing power to the network and if the rewards for use of the computing power are high enough to be profitable then I could bring plenty of users to the network.” Yeah Owen ?

Owen: Yeah right now, the Manta is launching right now you can install our launcher Manta’s client and you can rent out your gpu computer powering to get rewards right now so this system is is live right now yeah.

Eric: Okay so Manta is running as a matter of fact we just I think two hours ago we just published the second version of the deployment guide. So you can refer to our website or the Twitter for the detailed information about a version 2. And it may not 100% answer all of your questions. So do give me some looks and also point some pointers if you want to make it more clear so we can have a version 3 but that’s what we have we this Manta is running and you can deploy according to the guide that we already published version 1 and version 2 and I think you can refer to version 2 for more details. yeah and going forward from diffusesoup again so this is a very interesting question yeah
“Back at the beginning of the project there was a plan to launch smart contract in lateral language will this ever happenor has the idea been dropped ?” yep Owen ?

Owen: Yeah well if you have seen our 3.0 don’t mind, yeah you will
see the intelligent contract in it yeah we have already put it in our new roadmap and we’d like to finish this project in the coming well two years yeah that’s our plan.

Eric: So yeah yeah good question yeah that we do things with with considers some factors for example in this phase one of this Matrix 3.0 we do get back to 1.0 and make this intelligent contract as a part of the phase one so you can refer to the 3.0 blueprint Diffusesoup yeah that we will integrate this intelligent contract as part of the deliverables so stay tuned for that yeah very good question Diffusesoup appreciate.
It and move on from Keith
“What’s happening with all the medical information from China in regards to the scans for cancer and other I think and also other treatments ? Yeah.

Owen: Yeah so yeah as you know we had done lots of the algorithm in the medical industry in the last two years but in China we have problem because in at the in under the Chinese law the the ai algorithm the count is forbidden to do the medical diagnosis for the for the patients and that’s why the loss of the doctors only use our algorithm as a tools so although there are lots of the hospital and doctors are using our algorithm but it’s hard for us to get enough revenue to cover our cost but yeah as our plan. We are still doing our job to to how say that to to to push our projects our products in more new hospitals because I think maybe in future although it’s a very hard it’s very hard road but I think in the future our algorithm for medical will get a very good very good market and it can get lots of the revenue for the whole Matrix ecosystem yeah that’s okay.

Eric: So often let me put it this way, We do have a group from to assist the doctors to analyze the problem of the past patients but consider the political environment or legal aspect the doctors or hospital cannot use it directly. And to apply the analysis that they derived from the algorithms for the for any treatment so it’s kinds of assistance so to speak but don’t forget our stand is not to kind of provide all algorithms instead we are providing tools for anyone to come up with their own algorithms and to shoot their daily purpose and that’s our positioning it’s not we develop all the kinds of algorithms and then for people to use it is you can use our platforms and to come up and design develop and train your algorithms for your use and then you can become make it into an nft for trade and that’s the the positioning of our platform it’s not we to provide all their algorithms and that’s not what we what we are doing yeah we provide a platform instead yeah all right the question come from haha001 so there’s a very good name particularly during this Christmas holiday so here is the haha001 question
“What’s the difference between matrix ai and open ai technology?” Owen?

Owen: Yeah I think the most important difference between Matrix and open ai I think are two points the first one is I think the open ai right now is focusing on the language algorithm you can use their tools to maybe to write some poem or some story or something else but for Matrix our algorithm is focusing on the imaging and reorganization and also we can use them in the manufacturing industry. Yeah that’s the first difference and the second one is our platform is decentralized and the open ai is centralized that’s the the second one important difference between us.

Eric: Okay so one is about image and the other one is about voice and I recall it’s a Matrixian who came to me with a suggestion why don’t we come up with something that we usually ai to produce the the vocal for those celebrities in terms of film production and I said yeah similar like that yeah and that is a very good idea and then we move on to Morphinecloud the question is like this
“Hello what are the tools that we will be using to upload our brainwave to the Matrix database? Are we gonna need something like VR headset to interact with brainwave technology and record our brainwave? and how is it gonna add more utility to the main coin overall?” yeah good question Morphinecloud.

Owen: Yeah so yeah I think you have read our the documents about our 3.0 or map and we have some big plans in the future. yeah the the brainwaves is very important in our next plan as the very beginning we need to put some chips push on some chips on your head to receive the the brainwaves but I think it’s hard for the for the common people to do this work so I think in the future the me or our collaborators will design some smart equipment I think it maybe looks like some smart glasses as a Google glasses or Holo lens Holo lens okay the holo lens yeah yeah. And in the future if you need to storage keep your brainwaves with data storage in Matrix. And you need to use our algorithm and our computing power to training your avatar intelligence. Matrix, you need to spend and MAN as to to pay for the people who are offering the computing power for you all who offer the algorithms for you yeah that’s how we plan yeah.

Eric: Okay Morphinecloud is a very good question yeah you did read our blueprint and it’s very exciting and a brainwaves is a factor that I think very few project out there considered as an input input sources and while for Matrix we have envisioned this since day one that’s why we call Matrix. And just now Owen mentioned about the holo lens of Google glass I think he doesn’t mean we will use Google glass or holo lens but what he say is about some kinds of wearable technology that you can wear and then to transmit your brainwaves to your avatar in metaverse so as to train so it is not that 100% that we will be Google glass or already by some kinds of verbal technology yeah. I think more will be reviewed and you know and also you can refer to our articles from Steve Hawkins to the film. Which we just introduced different between the intrusive type and non intrusive in non intrusive type interest of time meaning you can inject a chip into your brain and I think is a very challenging for now and that’s why we adopt the long intrusive which which again we are using the verbal technology to transmit the spring wave and this spring work i’m very very good data for a lot of application not just to train your avatar so imagination is the only limit so to speak yeah. And then we move on to labio. Amazir07
“ Is the bio wallet using the DID planned in a roadmap 3.0 ?”

Owen: The bio wallet yeah the thing is the bio wallet even in our road map 3.0 yeah because we have we asked you to discuss about the suitable projects how to do this per product you know super way yeah so after our finishing our discussing under the design we will put it in our roadmap you will see it yeah.

Eric: Yeah so this is not a small project and according to my research a lot of these kinds of wallets got all got fundings to support and for now we will be focusing on the 3.0 blueprint. however if you are interested you can take a lead you can come to me and suggest your your ideas proposed and we’ll do what we can do to help you and then you can get out there to seek for fundings and I know many similar projects or even kinds of novel technology they got in terms of meaning setting fund. So but right now our strategic focus will be on the 3.0 to realize the Matrix film that is our vision of since day one so. I’m not saying this is not important but this is about the priority thing yeah and you are welcome to take a lead. yeah and I mean it.
All right and the f-crete question from BozKurt
“MANTA mainnet miner deployment guide” was released. Does this mean all miners need to set up a hardware and config as stated in the guide starting when?” Owen ?

Owen: Yeah in fact the old miners you didn’t need to set up this install this client in your hardware you can still do the mining in the old ways yeah but if you want to get some additional rewards for renting your gpu computing power out you can install the new client but if you just want to do the mining in the Matrix network you need to install this new client yeah.

Eric: Okay right so these are the eight questions that we selected from the Matrixians. And since it is almost the end of 2022 so I would like to raise the last question for this AMA.

Owen if you are to choose one word to kind of summarize 2022 and kind of look forward to 2023 what would would you pick?

Owen: I would like to pick xin yeah xinis a Chinese character it means new because I think for Matrix we have already finished our all the milestones in the 2.0 and the way the 3.0 is new is a new beginning for us right now yeah that’s and another hand I think the COVID-19 is almost gone all over the world I think is also a new beginning for the the whole world so I think the xin means new is very suitable for for me to pick for the 2022 yeah.

Eric: Okay very good so I think another new aside from the new 3.0 blueprint. we also have a new website and also we have the new year 2022 coming so I think you did pick a very good words which is xin and which means new. And can I request you to write it down and then we can use that as a reward to the lucky winner of the Matrixians yeah.

Owen : Okay yeah

Eric: Okay okay good yeah and please do you. So here can you show US what is
scene look like in Chinese character.

Owen : yes, I just finished my paperwork . So all my choices you see this character
and you know the meaning that

Eric: Owen, I want to convey and we will organize an event and give away as a gift for the lucky winners so stay tuned for our event mechanism ok, so good so I think that concludes today's ama and I wish you and your beloved ones a very healthy and prosperous 2023. yeah, and Owen do you have anything to say?

Owen : yeah, the best wishes for all of you in the next year and also best wishes for matrix
Eric: yeah, I am sure we have a lot of potential there considering we have this very exciting 3.0 blueprint and thanks for all of your support, bye bye.

From Stephen Hawking to Matrix: Making Science Fiction Come True (2)

The Battle Between Invasive and Non-invasive Technologies

Around 2005, BCI research has once again become the focus of biomedical engineering. In the summer of that year, an international conference on BCI was held in a valley in Albany, New York, with more than 100 attendants. The conference gathered the world’s earliest BCI researchers who had innovative ideas on inducing brain electrical activities, processing brain electrical signals, etc.
The chairman of the conference is Professor Jonathan Wolpaw of Wadsworth Center in New York State. He believes that non-invasive scalp EEG is the future of BCI technology.
Patients with motor impairment like Stephen Hawking can type or control his wheelchair by wearing an EEG hat, which can record and recognise simple electrical activities of the brain with the help of pattern recognition programs. Dr. Wolpaw is a compassionate scholar. He noticed that a different type of BCI technology, which was invasive, had also made great progress.
This type of BCI embeds silicon electrode arrays into the brain through surgery to access the brain's motor control areas. It can catch the electric discharge of nerve cells, which, after being analysed by computers, can be used to control a cursor or move a mechanic arm. Although this technology allows for more precise control, the damage done by surgery is unavoidable.
Professor John Donoghue of Brown University, whom Professor Wolpaw had also invited to the conference, was  a major advocate of invasive BCI. The debate between the two approaches was intense on that day.

Non-Invasive BCI

Imagine you are wearing an EEG cap as you read this article. The EEG cap is covered with a regular array of metal electrodes (usually made of silver and silver chloride), each injected with conductive adhesive (usually of sodium chloride and adhesive substances).
Your scalp can communicate with the metal electrodes through the conductive adhesive, to which is attached a bio-amplifier. Now, a weak change of electric potential is detected on the electrodes on your forehead and the back of your head. This potential change reflects your level of concentration, but the words you are reading and your specific thoughts can’t be detected.
If we compare your brain to a huge stadium, the audience inside are nerve cells, and they are all "chatting" privately. If you want to hear what everyone is talking about, you need to put a microphone near them.
To do this, one has to enter the stadium. What this means to our brains is invasive surgery. Of course, to avoid incision, we can place the electrodes on the scalp surface instead. But this would be like putting a microphone outside the stadium, the result being we won’t be able to listen in on what everyone is chatting about. But if there is a commotion in the stadium, for instance, when everyone is cheering, it can be heard outside of the stadium; The electrodes cannot distinguish the activity of individual nerve cells, but they can detect when a major electrical activity is happening in the brain when many nerve cells are acting in unison, like when half or the entire stadium is cheering.

This comparison shows that EEG is a low-resolution neural sensing technology. According to the electromagnetic field theory, EEG only has a spatial resolution of about one centimetree, which is to say, nervous activities less than one centimetree in size is undetectable by EEG electrodes. If someone claims he can use non-invasive EEG to interpret mental activities in detail, such as words or numbers in your mind, your memories, etc., you shouldn’t take him seriously.

So, why are there so many researchers specializing in non-invasive BCI at the Albany Conference? Because it doesn’t have to cause an incision so that it is applicable in everyday situations.
If we can design sophisticated visual or auditory stimuli to allow BCI users to load their simple thoughts onto their own brain waves through attention or imagination mechanisms, then we can analyse the user's brain wave patterns to extract those thoughts.
This is an indirect way to interpret thoughts, which uses EEG as the carrier of information and is somewhat similar to the modulation and demodulation of a communication system. Jonathan Wolpaw's research group made it possible for people to type without touching the keyboard through BCI by studying P300, an attention-related event-induced potential.
The P300 potential appears when the brain detects a small probability of external stimuli or a new event in a series of repetitive events. This potential activity is often the strongest in the centre of the head. The voltage is positive, and the peak occurs about 300 milliseconds after the event, hence the name P300 (P for Positive).
If the alphabet is shown to you at random, a P300 potential will be detected at the crown of your head when the letter you have in mind appears, but no P300 potential will appear when other unrelated letters appear.
If we type the 26 English letters randomly so that each pop up briefly on a computer screen, and measure your P300 through EEG at the same time, we can know the letters you desire to enter. Wolpaw’s research team applied this method and achieved great success. The obvious disadvantage of this method is we have to keep showing the 26 letters to the user to the point the user’s eyes might fatigue. In addition, different individuals might differ greatly in their P300 patterns brain waves are large, which is also challenging for algorithm development.

Maybe you’ll think this type of BCI is not intuitive, as it needs external visual stimulation to work. Can’t EEG simply read your thoughts as they naturally occur in your brain? Due to the low resolution of EEG as mentioned above, more detailed ideas can’t be deciphered, the only exception being “motor imagination”.
When we imagine moving our left hand, right hand, or foot, EEG electrodes can be placed on the band-shaped area (sensory motor belt) extending from the top of the head to the ears to detect the difference between these three different states.
The physiological basis behind this is that the functional division of the sensorimotor band corresponds to the different parts of the body: your left hand is controlled by the right part of the sensorimotor band, and your right hand by the left part of the sensorimotor band, forming a contralateral cross. The lower limbs and feet are controlled by the middle section of the sensorimotor band.
Since the responsible areas of the left and the right feet are both in the middle of the scalp, there is no way to tell the two apart. If you place EEG electrodes on these three areas (left, middle and right of the sensorimotor belt), ideally, by detecting the changes in the intensity of brain electrical activities in these three locations, you can deduce whether a person is imagining moving his left hand, right hand, or feet.
Of course, when you are moving your hands and feet, the changes in brain electrical activity in these three areas are clearer and more intense. A simple functional magnetic resonance imaging can demonstrate the correlation between these areas. EEG on the surface of the scalp is weak, measured in microvolts only, and it is buried in a large amount of electrical and physiological noise. To accurately detect the motor imagination of the left and right hands and feet, weak signal processing technologies are required.
The dominant energy changes of the EEG in the sensorimotor band range between 10 Hz and 20 Hz, which are the so-called alpha and beta bands of EEG. It is necessary to filter the collected EEG signals and extract the energy changes in the alpha and beta frequency bands which contain key information, before sending them to a trained classification algorithm to complete an accurate translation of the EEG signals.

The Application of Non-Invasive BCI

If we have good EEG caps, amplifiers and algorithms with high accuracy, we can use brain waves to control screen cursors, prosthetics, wheelchairs and even robots. Since the EEG can only detect the differences between three mental states, it can only control up to three kinds of movement: turn left, turn right or go forward.
Through special training and sophisticated programming, a small number of people can control two-dimensional or three-dimensional movements. For example, Professor Bin He of Minnesota University demonstrated an EEG-controlled drone in his lab. But the most memorable demonstration happened at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
History will remember the moment when a Brazilian youth with lower limb disabilities used his BCI-controlled robotic leg to kick the opening shot. The way this technology worked was through the motor imagination BCI technology we just talked about.

These demonstrations seemed straight out of sci-fi fiction. But why aren’t these technologies applied clinically to help severely disabled patients regain their motor ability? On the one hand, the bottleneck is with brain electrodes. As mentioned earlier, in order to capture high-quality and stable EEG signals, it is necessary to have conductive gel between the electrodes and the scalp. While this gel may be suitable for short-term use, after two hours it will dry out so the movement of ions in it will be blocked. The quality of the EEG signal will drop significantly until the BCI system stops working. On the other hand, the challenge is with the existence of various interferences, such as electromagnetic noise in the surroundings, electrophysiological signals on the user's body surface, etc. The user’s psychological state may also mess up the stability of the system. Many BCI recognition algorithms cannot work stably when they leave the lab environment and move into people’s homes. As new EEG sensors (such as dry electrodes) and recognition algorithms come out, EEG caps will hopefully help patients who have lost motor function enjoy the freedom of movement again.

From Stephen Hawking to Matrix: Making Science Fiction Come True (3)

Invasive BCI: Reading Detailed Motor Signal Through Neural Chips

Since EEG signals are not precise or stable enough, why not insert a neural sensor into the brain to read and record the activities of each motor nerve cell, or insert a BCI that stays in the brain forever? In 1998, Philip Kennedy, founder of an American start-up named Neural Signals, tried implanting microelectrodes in the human brain to record the discharge of nerve cells in the motor area, hoping to help a disabled person who had completely lost his motor ability reconnect with the outside world. Since Philip couldn’t use as many electrodes as he wants, the experiment couldn’t achieve an interpreting accuracy sufficient for practical use.
Despite this, his preliminary research and Dr. Gray Walter's brave attempt in the 60s inspired a group of researchers in neuroelectro-physiological motor function, including John Donoghue of Brown University, Andrew Schwartz of the University of Pittsburgh, Miguel Nicolelis of Duke University and Jose Carmena of Berkeley University. They had been in the electrophysiological research of primate motor nerves for a long time and had a deep understanding of the mechanism of the monkey brain motor cortex nerve cells that control upper limb movement.
As mentioned above, the movement of hands and feet is controlled by the contralateral sensorimotor band. But the next question is: how is information such as the direction, acceleration, and the force of hand and foot movement encoded through the nerve cell activities of the sensorimotor band?

Research on this question can be traced back to Charles Sherrington, the founder of modern neuroscience and a winner of the Nobel Prize in 1932. He discovered that muscles are controlled by the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord in a relationship more complicated than a simple one-to-one match. The idea behind this population coding inspired future research on brain motor cortex nerve cell coding.
In the early 1980s, Apostolos Georgopoulos and others discovered that the neurons of the motor cortex used "democratic voting" to collaboratively code the arms’ direction of movement.
If we use a vector to represent the discharges of these nerve cells, the direction of the vector is the preferred direction of the cell, and the length of the vector is the number of discharges per second (discharge rate), then the sum of the recordable "discharge vector" of all the cells is the target direction of the arm.

The Birth of Invasive BCI

The first invasive BCI studies were conducted on trained monkeys. By 2002, the monkeys in Donoghue’s laboratory could use the nerve cell activities in the motor area of their brains to control the cursor on a computer screen.
Then the monkeys in Schwartz’s laboratory could freely control objects in a three-dimensional space through a similar BCI. Now, monkeys in Nicolelis' lab can even remotely control a robotic arm at MIT from Duke University.
As electrode implantation and neural activity interpretation become more precise, the number of parameters that monkeys can control through BCI is increasing. By 2008, the monkeys in Schwartz's laboratory could freely control up to ten parameters of a robotic arm’s movement and operate the robotic arm through BCI to fetch marshmallows for themselves. This shows the bright future for disabled people who need invasive BCI to control prostheses.

The development of invasive BCI from primates to humans should be credited to three brave disabled people. The first was Matthew Nagle, a patient with high paraplegia. In 2006, he agreed to implant a hundred-channel microelectrode array in the area of his cerebral motor cortex responsible for hand control.
This electrode array was connected to the BrainGate BCI system developed by Donoghue's lab capable of using thoughts to control the cursor, open emails, or play ping-pong games. Unfortunately, Matthew died of an infection the following year.
The second test subject was Cathy Hutchinson, who lost her motor ability due to a stroke. In 2012, with the help of BrainGate's second-generation BCI system, she could use a robotic arm to bring coffee to her mouth and take a sip for the first time in 15 years.
The third test subject was Ian Burkhart, a paraplegic patient due to a car accident. In 2016, with the help of second-gen BrainGate, his motor nerve signals were translated into electrical pulses to drive the muscle stimulation electrodes on his arms so he could move his arms again to grasp, rotate his wrists and even play a couple of strums on the guitar.
Over the past 15 years, invasive BCI has completed its transition from monkey to human. In addition to neuroscientists and biomedical engineers, neurosurgeons have also played an important role in this. The technologies involved in these three clinical trials are very complicated, and without exception, it is the teamwork of researchers from all three fields that made it happen.

Challenges for Invasive BCI

Seeing these exciting research results, you may think invasive BCI is perfect and that clinical application is close at hand, but you will be disappointed. So far, 15 to 20 severely disabled people have participated in clinical trials of invasive BCI, and they all encountered a problem: the implanted electrodes gradually failed due to the fact glia cells will wrap around  them so they can no longer record nerve cell discharges.
The above clinical experiments all used Utah arrays. Although it is only 4x4 mm, the 100 silicon electrode microneedles on it have to penetrate the surface of the brain and insert themselves among nerve cells to record nerve discharge signals. It will inevitably cause inflammatory responses from glia cells. In the worst-case scenario, these electrodes will become ineffective after 2 to 3 months.
At best, they can last for 2 to 3 years, but the signal quality will gradually decline, and so will the performance of BCI. If this problem can’t be solved, long-term implantation is impossible, and the cost of replacing electrodes every 2 to 3 years is too high. In addition, the wireless transmission of neural signals is also a problem.
All of the above clinical experiments have installed wired plugs in the patient's head to transmit nerve signals and power supply, which would greatly increases the risk of infection. To address these two problems, scientists have considered many solutions, such as reducing the reaction of glia cells by adding anti-inflammatory substances on the electrode surface.
Wireless and low-power neural chips are also being developed. Some people  have even proposed to spread nano-dust around nerve cells to form Neural Dust around the cells so that neural signals can be obtained through an ultrasonic power supply.

To solve these two problems, low-invasive BCI was proposed in 2013: the neural electrodes will only be embedded in the surface of the cerebral cortex but not penetrate the cortex. BCI can be established through the field potential of a few electrodes rather than neural discharge activities, which helps avoid inflammatory responses and glia cell overgrowth.
Meanwhile, wireless data exchange and power supply are both possible, since the number of electrodes and the signal sampling rate are low. Such a low-invasive solution may capture less neural information than electrode arrays, but it’s reliable in the long run. Under this principle, we have designed a new BCI typing method, placing electrodes in the key regions of the visual brain area that process moving objects, and using high-frequency field potential changes above 60 Hz in the area to distinguish the patient's attention and focus.
This way, we can achieve fast, accurate and long-term stable EEG typing.

From Stephen Hawking to Matrix: Making Science Fiction Come True (4)

Making Matrix Come True

BCI is also controversial, often criticised as being a form of brain control. In fact, our society used to experience similar ethical dilemmas with human cloning and gene editing. The technology we are talking about today has not reached the level of reading and manipulating minds. Only with the unbroken cooperation from users can this technology decipher their thoughts, not to mention implant any new ideas. To further complicate things, our thoughts are continuous in time and thus won’t not be editable like genetic information at least in the foreseeable future.

Even though it is difficult, there are still people who keep trying. For example, after three years’ research, the Tonegawa Laboratory of MIT is already capable of deleting, modifying or writing one bit of fear information in transgenic mice though optogenetic technology. They hope to use this technology to remove people’s pathological fears or help Alzheimer's patients treat memory impairment.

There are still obstacles to this technology though. It’s not as close at hand as the media has made it appear.

People may ask: what will BCI be like in its ultimate form? We know BCI is a futuristic technology that, just like space exploration, has been depicted in many sci-fi films. In the Matrix trilogy, human thoughts are directly uploaded to the Matrix through BCI, and people will have their own digital avatars in the Matrix as well. This is what we are ultimately aiming for.

                                                                                                  Announcement about Manual Swap

Dear Matrixians,

Please be advised that the monthly manual swap has been finished today. We appreciate your patience.

In 2019, Matrix has its own native token. Ever since then, the Team has been kind providing swap service for those who possess ERC-20 tokens, mainly those who participated in ICO, until today. Additionally, swap requests have also been made to partners. This swapping service is a good will from the Team providing additional supports to those who genuinely forgot to swap. Sadly, speculators have taken advantage of this noble intention. Such abuse harms each and every Matrixian, including you. We shouldn't and won't permit such things to occur any more.

Given that the Team has provided more than enough time for swapping and that the abuse is still occurring, it has been decided that the swapping service will end on January 26, 2023 (23:59 HK Time). We will continue consider swap requests from ICO participants during this 7-day, but speculators will be responsible for their own risks of abuse. We will not publish another announcement when this last swap is completed. Essentially, please use only KuCoin for trading the native token, MAN.

We believe that this is in Matrix's and the Matrixians' best interests. Let's stop this abuse together.

Into the Matrix.

                                                                                                     Matrix AMA - January 2023

January 2023 AMA

Owen: Dear Matrixian, Happy Chinese New Year!

After my new year’s holiday, I have already started my business trip. Right now I am in Xichang, this is a city in the western of China. It’s something like Houston in China, where the Chinese government launched their rockets. I hope I could find some business opportunities for Matrix Mainnet and also some partners for our MANTA system.
Now let’s start this AMA for the first time after the Chinese New Year.
Q1: Hi owen, I’m seeing massive hype around chat gpt and open AI right now. You once said the Matrix might have the best ki in china or even in the world. Can Matrix keep up with open AI and their projects, or maybe even more effective? Best regards. by

Owen: Of course, the Chatgpt is very hot in the AI areas right now. But in fact, the Matrix AI is focusing on the different areas with the Openai.
Openai’s main business is focusing on the AIGC, which is a job for artificial intelligence generated content. But we are focusing on the different areas. For the Matrix AI, the main job for us is to decentralize the computing power and also maybe the auto machine learning. But we want to do some tests in the AIGC area right now. You can see we have one of our ecosystem project, which is named AIRTIST.
They want to use the artificial intelligence technology to do the art generation. So maybe in the future we will do more tests in the AIGC area, which can make more demand for our AI Computing power. I think it’s good for our business and our MANTA system.

Q2: MANTA is ready to provided computing power for AI services. Has anyone from (Matrix Community, Matrix Team or Matrix Partners) have connected their GPU miners to the MANTA? If yes, what are the current number of GPU connected to MANTA? Also how we can check these type of info on the network? by @BozKurt

Owen: Right now there are not too much computing power has collecting our MANTA platform. But we are trying our best to seek more and more computing power from the personal machine owner and also the centralized computing platform such as the cloud computing platform to connect their gpu to our platform.
I think you are offering a very good suggestion. I think we will add some more functions on our MANTA platform. You can check information such as how much should the gpu computing power has already connected to our MANTA system and also maybe the percents, how much of the computing power is busy or how much of the computing power is free. I think that will help the users and also our business partners to use our MANTA platform better.

Q3: Could the team please could write a general, concise and informative blog post discussing: 1. Plans for interoperability, cross-chain utility, dapps, inter connectivity with industry at large. 2. Plans for MAN-using customers acquisition. 3. Further improving tokenomics and utility. 4. An update on current partnerships and the teams plan. Do you think a summary with a few brief explanations about the above could be arranged? by

Owen: Yes, I think it’s a very good suggestion.I will discuss with our marketing team to write this article. I think it will be divided in pieces to release to our community. And also I think we can add it into our gitbook, which you can check it very easily in our website.

Q4: When do we see something from AIRTIST? by

Owen: For AIRTIST, as I know, they have already finished their mvp work right now, but we know the NFT market is freezing right now.
So I think they are doing their job to make some changes for their business model. I think maybe you can get some news in the coming one or two months about AIRTIST and maybe we can see their new demo.

Q5: Is it possible for the Matrix Ai blockchain to Tokenize Real World Assets such as Comodities or Securities to make them tradable and Interoperable on other platforms using AI ? by
 Dani Mcfly

Owen: Yes, it’s a good suggestion. But in fact, I don’t think this is a
technical problem because I think all the public chains would like to do this business to talk about the real world asset and put them on their blockchains. In fact, it’s very easy in the technical area, but the more complicated for this business is the legal problems.
Because you need to do lots of the proof that the tokenizing, the token will, if you hold a token, you can get the real asset. I think maybe in the future we could do some tests in this area, but I don’t think it can be a very good business for all kinds of the public chains in this time.

Q6: How can we build a project on MAN? Do you have Grants to onboard applications? by @ Godlysan

Owen: If you want to build a project on the Matrix AI Network, you can find our guide document on our website. About the grant, I think it’s a very good suggestion. If you have some good projects which you want to public on our mainnet, you can write to us and I will discuss with the foundation what kind of grants we can offer to you to help you to build your projects very soon.

Q7: If a third party wanted to launch a Dapp or token using Matrix, could you tell me how I could leverage the AI of matrix to help my project? Do you have a ‘sale pitch’ for potential prospects go get the ecosystem going? by

Owen: For this question, if you just want to build a general decentralized app on Matrix, we don’t have too much advantage with the other public chains. But if you want to build an dapp based on the AI technologies, I think Matrix will be your best choice. Because for all kinds of the AI applications, the computing power and the data will be the most important for your business.
On Matrix, at first you can get the cheap, decentralized AI computing power. And also you can make your data into NFT, which is you can make your data to be a real digital assets which can keep your data only belong to yourselves. For the business pitch, I think it’s good for our business and we are working on it. After we have finished this work, we’d like to put it on our website and release to our community.

Q8: What is the requirement to enter $man ecosystem? ? Will the number of $MAN decrease for those who want to enter the ecosystem as the price of $Man increases in the future? by

Owen: Right now, if you want to build a project on our mainnet, right now we don’t have any requirement to ask you to hold how much MAN token to build your applications on our mainnet.
So I don’t think it will be a problem for the developers to join our ecosystem.

Q9: Whats the different between the Vision of 3.0 and neuralink? only the blockchain ? by

Owen: It’s an interesting question, but in fact we have very different with Neuralink for our 3.0 version. As we know, Neuralink submissions, they want to find some way which can use the chips to connect the people’s brain and the network and/or some machines which can make the people use their brain to control something or do some movement or do some missions directly.
But for the Matrix AI, in the next step, we’d like to do something different. We have created a new thing, we call it avatar intelligent, which means. You can build a copy of you in the network.
This copy can sync like you, can do decisions like you. That’s what we want to do. In the near future, our marketing team is writing some articles to introduce avatar intelligent. I think you will see this article very soon and I think it can solve most of your problems about the difference with Matrix AI and Neuralink.
That’s all. Thank you to Matrixians and our lovely community. İn the coming year, we want to do our best and we’d like to work with you. I think we can do something really big in the coming year.
Thank you. Bye bye.
