The purpose of holding a coin is to make out profit from it, and a coin that will survive and has the plan of survival will work towards it. The introduction of staking is a very good way to maintain a coin's price and quality, cause if one is receiving a reward for holding a coin, then the interest of selling it off will be limited.

At the beginning of a project, it's hard to identify which have potential altcoins and which are shitcoins.  Because at the first glance, they seem good to be true, and also when you check the roadmap everything is fine.  I have seen many projects that seem good at the start but after months they end up in shitcoins.

Considering potential altcoins to hold in a long term are those in the top 10 in CMC.  For sure they have the potential upon holding in a long term but all of these was depend on the Bitcoin price of course which leads to the market price position.

So in this case, if you want to pump altcoin it might be good if you will also hold Bitcoin and allocate a large percentage of Bitcoin in your portfolio.

But if they are new coins, I personally will not set for a long term hold, if:
- The team is also new
- They don't offer a real roadmap or use case of the product
- They are not listed on top exchanges
and some other details

But, if they're created by some popular people how to have a good track record, I will consider it.
But, once more, I will take low risks by only holding top coins, for new coins, I will prefer to set a target price in order to take profits.

I always recommend to my friends who are new and want to dive into the crypto world to hold long term as opposed to short term trading.
Because if you look at history, all coins that have good fundamentals will always go up from year to year.
Trading is good, but if you don't have enough skills it will be difficult to make a profit.

Now I appreciate your long term vision, but having seen the market for the last 6+years, I am of the opinion that long term hodling is good for bitcoin and probably the top 5altcoins apart from the forked coins. Rest of the coins are all going to end up in a pump and dump while bitcoin keeps going up.

You may have some shitcoin in your bag and you are not getting a chance to sell them - I can assure you that your thought on its future is genuine but the reality is that they will probably never comes back up again, and even if they do, they will not be enough to break even the money you spent buying them. This is sad but true. Since the crypto markets are unregulated, many projects have gone bankrupt or just plain scam/hostile takeover.

So I am sure that bitcoin will pump if you hold long but shitcoins will not break even in the long term.

I agree with you. Of course you can always be more efficient and make bigger profits if you are an active trader that actively sells at highs and rebuys at dips in order to increase your holding but of course that way of investing also brings a lot of risks with it as every time you do a trade you are also in danger of making a mistake. If you just buy a project that you are convinced of and hodl it for a certain amount of time then of course the potential mistakes that you can make are very limited and therefore it is safer. The only big mistake that you can make is to invest into a altcoin that will not be around in a few years anymore, like 99% of all those meme-coins that are appearing at the moment.

There are thousands of altcoins, and many of them won't pump no matter how long you wait because they were useless in the first place / were made by a company that committed an exit scam / didn't have a strong community behind them. So it's not as easy as buying random tokens and waiting. But if we're talking about strong projects that already received a lot of attention and have high market capitalization (excluding Doge and similar artificially pumped coins, which can be a very risky choice), then it's likely that buying some and waiting for a few years will result in profit (although, of course, this won't happen for all of them).

all that does not apply to altcoins with low market cap. holding too long will only make you lose. no profit is made from choices like this, I've done it many times and it means nothing. A plan like this is only good for high end altcoins that have a large marketcap.

The part that I don't agree is you did not name or give the what kind of coin that will pump, not all coins are going to have a pump, we should not hold for the sake of holding, we should make sure that the kind of altcoins we are holding has a platform that can enhance the usage of Cryptocurrency not just a coin made for pump and dump.

Is not that obvious? If you have capital to back up the investment you have locked to certain coins for having a goal to get better profit in the future then it's a great idea to spare your money on crypto for a long time until you meet the goal. But, most of the third world countries users are having trouble with it and they prefer to do short term trading instead because they need that money quickly and it's much more convenient to do.

Holding for long is usually profitable I'm sure of that base on my personal experience, but this result always requires patience sometimes when volatility occurs it can change the duration one have in mind to hold.
