I would absolutely love to see proof that our cave-dwelling ancestors had gambling games with rocks, sticks and bones. I doubt there is a way to actually find out the oldest gambling games of humans /early humans though. We cannot even seem to find out what the lost languages, like aramaic or even older ones, were in essence. So something as complex as gambling is definitely lost to time. 

There is even proof that animals like chimpanzees have a proclivity towards some version of what might resemble gambling. They did experiments with apes in labs and the apes did seem to understand the gambling concept of risky winning. Not sure if one could find something similiar in wild nature.

just to add to the online gambling part, they are now also bringing it into Virtual reality. with the advancement of technology, it'll be only a matter of time before gambling in Virtual reality would become a norm.

People went from fighting in a pit and wagering on the winner, to throwing dice in a casino, picking numbers on a wheel, or playing a slot machine.

I never thought that it turns out that the history of gambling is very old and has been done by people since time immemorial. But I think maybe that's what has been written in books about the history of gambling but maybe there are still things that haven't been written or found because there are still many locations that still keep mysteries and may have something to do with gambling. Very interesting article by @OP and can explain to us that the age of gambling itself is very old. We may never have imagined how they invented gambling and its appropriate tools for that era.

In my opinion, the history of gambling may go back much earlier than the era of the pharaohs, and perhaps it may reach the Babylonian era, when civilization was flourishing under the rule of Hammurabi. But the article is limited by scientific integrity as the oldest tool discovered may have been used to make a bet.
I once read in one of the stories that in the Babylonian era in Mesopotamia, some were betting on the soldiers going to war whether he would return or not, and the one who won the bet of a soldier who could no longer get that soldier’s wife.

Maybe it's painted on cave walls from our ancestors for newer generations to see. We may not know that but I had a feeling with the advancement of anthropology in the modern era more and more evidence will be found not just in gambling but on other niches as well.

Interesting basic overview. Quite frankly, it is very likely that gambling is as old as life itself. If you consider animal behaviour, everything is about gambling and the stake is usually life itself or even the right to reproduce, feed or a territory. Many animals frequently have to "bet" on a decision in the sense that they choose to fight or flee, confront a rival or leave it to see another day, etc... For humans, no difference... life is a gamble.

And I prefer to bet for life, where I don't know tomorrow I will get money to eat, get a salary slip or not, get health or even fall ill all will never be separated from maintaining myself from the rigors of life. The gambling story that is so long above proves that this has made human civilization about betting not only about getting something. Like rolling the dice if the result is a red dot then the chances of success are small. Like the Japanese samurai determine the fate of their enemies just by rolling the dice.

The evolution of gambling is really astonishing. And as we can see, it has existed since time immemorial. It has been with humanity throughout its evolution. History shows that gambling has been part of human life.  It thrives even with the disapproval of many religions, so anyone trying to remove gambling from society is pretty much hitting his head on a sturdy brick wall.

I have always thought that during the ancient days, there's already gambling but in different terms like in physique and competitions. There's no actual bet.
But gambling during that time is the actual competition and the winner will get the recognition that they'll have. The winner takes it all why the loser will have the degraded attention from the mass like losing his popularity.

It's a long history and yes, gambling has been around us since many years ago. The gambling itself is always progressing from traditional ways that are gambling offline only with certain things to bet until right now the crypto gambing. trading with the lives of slave is probably normal during that time. making both slaves fight so they can have a champ to fight with another champ. these kind of records can be found in the archives. i don't think they call it sports betting during that time.

in the bible, they gamble when David fights Goliath. that should have been one of the history of gambling similar to sports betting but bible i guess is not an appropriate record for sports.

It is interesting to see the development of gambling over the years. From trading stones, to slots, and to the integration of a system that is conveniently accessed online. Due to the pandemic, this also strengthened its playerbase especially that most people have preferred to gamble online and realize its convenience and potentia and lots of physical gambling companies have started closing as they adopted their services on the internet.

I guess OP you can also add that gambling has also been integrated to our mobile phones and to some of the online games present. Though they make take a form that is somehow different from your conventional gambling method (e.g. crate boxes, etc.), in essence, a player still gambles on the process.

Ahh. I thought this generation is naughty and have bad habits like gambling, but I was the damn wrong. Rather it is happening since centuries ago and we are only taking it forward.  

You'll be very surprised to know that our ancestors' lifestyle was the same as ours, from their professions, their politics, to business, banking, and finance. Our only difference is that we are in the better side of the technology spectrum, which should give us a shower thought that if we are given a golden opportunity to invest in a ground-breaking technology, we should take it! True, d20 is covered with Greek symbols and not Egyptian hieroglyphs, but it was found in Egypt and dates from the period when Egypt was under the control of the Greek Ptolemies.
There is no way to know exactly what the d20 was used for. In ancient times, dice were often used for divination rituals, so this dice may not even be part of gambling history at all.
