Choices: Gamble or Help the poor ?

In order to understand the psychology of gamblers, i have decided to come up few questions for discussions, and here is the first one.

Suppose that you are a responsible gambler who have allocated a certain portion of money to gamble each month. Now you came across a poor person/family who is in urgent need of money. Will you quit the gambling for that month and give the allocated money to the poor family or will you prefer to gamble as you can't live without gambling ?

it is a call of attitude and character , we all have our stands in this part so best to answer with our own views and attitude.


Mine? i was born and raised by people who loves to help though i learn gambling away from them yet i am grateful to have their character so with that?


I can skip gambling not only in 1 month or even if whole year if I find them not in good shape living , meaning since you mentioned being a responsible gambler at least i can be a responsible person also.

Honestly, I won't quit. I can give some to them but not everything that I set aside for entertainment. It's not that I can't live without gambling, it's just that I can choose to pay myself first using money that I worked for.

It would be interesting to know if those who said they will quit for a month would keep giving away their money to every poor person they meet. In most places, we encounter many of them on a daily/weekly basis.

Upon checking some of the replies on this thread, I'm not really sure that everyone is being honest but rather answering based on what seems to be the good option which is to help those who need assistance urgently. If only that will be true then there are a lot of people outside of a casino who will be begging for help as people will help them avoid gambling.  

Anyways, I think the option of stopping gambling activities for a month or maybe even more to help someone is if that someone is a relative of yours or a loved one. Other than that, people who just give a small or average amount then move on.

I guess it is hard to look into the psychology of gamblers with too direct a question as this one. It's hard to expect people to provide honest-to-goodness answers if that could mean they would put themselves in an awkward or embarrassing position.

Anyway, in my country it isn't once in a blue moon that you could come across a person or family that urgently needs money. Everybody is probably aware that a relative, a friend, a neighbor, a workmate, or whoever has urgent need every now and then. But that doesn't mean people would easily set aside their luxury or vice for their sake. Sometimes they probably do, but most often they definitely don't. That includes myself.

I think these are two different things. when I feel sympathy, then I will give alms according to what I can afford. we have a culture of helping each other and things like this are commonplace for us. however, this will be different when someone begs you for money on the pretext of needing money. most people will ignore it, let alone give the money you have previously allocated either for betting or as savings.

I can't guarantee, but almost everyone around me will not give their money, especially with regard to other people who are not part of the family or someone who does not have a close relationship. It's a pretty weird psychological problem, but we can understand it.

Why choose one of them if you can do both? I always allocating my funds for gamble, donation, emergency funds etc, so if I will face various situation at a month, I wouldn't think about it when it's happen. Helping poor people doesn't need to use all of your saved money, just give them what you willing to give, so if they can't pay you back in the future, there's nothing to be worried and think about the money every single day.

It doesn't fair if I need to give all of my money for the poor people because I need to be happy and earn more money.

it depends on what the urgency is, if the family only needs a small amount of money I'd be glad to help but if the family needs a sizable amount of money it would be best to ask for government assistance or ask certain politicians for help since they'd probably be the ones who can actually help(especially with how little money I save for my gambling session).

I am always ready to chip in to help the person in need. But I will not give all the money already allocated to something.

I am sure I am not the only one that can help the family. There are governments and their friends. I can give them the extra money that I have to help alleviate the monetary problems that they have. I follow strictly my budget, so the money already allocated for my gambling, or any money already allocated will not be touched.

Personally, I am a generous person, it is the least I could do by denying myself gambling for the month in order to help others. That is not even a thing to bother myself thought about because I had done it before when I was still earning with a paid job. I had to give someone 95% of my salary for the month because it was clear that the person needed the money more than me. It is easy for me to compromise for people if the need is truly genuine rather than enjoying knowing that others are suffering.

This is matter of a personal decision and personal interest, because theirs some people who love humans and who is a cheerful giver, those people do like to solve people problem, like me i will prefer to save life than going for that particular month gambling, because you may place your bet or gamble and lose all the money you are suppose to use and save life, expect it's a gamblling addict that forfeit helping or choosing gambling over a human problem despite far is the relationship from the person i will help

How many people need this help in your community? town? country? continent? world?
It's something sustainable? Ok it's possible help a friend that need your effort, and it's not related to your gambling habit.
Helping random people with money (unless your are a kind of multi billionaire) it's just impossible and an endless problem.

Of course life of a poor family comes first than my gambling and if I were in that situation for just a month or even two,three months I would quit gambling and give them the money.However I cannot do it indefinitely as that is not how life goes,as that saying says give man a fish and he will eat for one day,teach him how to fish and he will eat for all his life.So I can do this,quit my gambling activity for a maximum of couple of months and give the money to the poor but I cannot do it indefinitely as that would not make much of a sense.

I don’t have advance fund allocation for my gambling activities because I just gamble whenever I feel like playing and not through plan so in case I stumble to a family in need while I still have my extra then I will just use the money to help other people that really in need because my gambling activity is not top priority in my personal life.

I’m not usually doing charity works because I rarely go out and explore someone else house but for the sake of discussion. Gambling is less priority than helping others for my personal beliefs.

Separate issues to me.

Gambling is entertainment. So whatever amount of money you are willing to put towards entertainment, do so. If you have spare money and a cause is important enough to you, do so. It's a qualitative thing. And questions are neither either/or. Maybe any particular month you want more fun or any particular month maybe there is a cause that you find particularly important.

I don’t really like helping random people unless it is someone I know and care about. There are thousands of people dying from hunger everyday. The world is already overpopulated anyway. We need less people, not more. I’d rather prefer gambling to helping people which I don’t know. If gambling is not possible then I would spend it on blow and coke. I can’t fix the world that’s not my job.

Why should that money come from your "gambling" budget? Why can you not simply eat a little bit less "takeaways" or at expensive restaurants.... or better yet, stop smoking or drinking, if that is your addiction?

I do not have to feel bad about gambling... because I have a portion of my budget set aside to help people in need in any way. (I have debit orders going off for that, so it is totally automated)

I often give my winnings from gambling to help others. The main point that I apply is to gamble and help others even then if I experience victory. maybe for me this is a difficult question if we have to help the poor by quitting gambling while we are gambling addicts. however I will try to stay alive in my perception and not complain about the suffering of others.

If I come across a family that needs money, or a person that needs money, I will first find out that the person needs the money for and if It's worth giving the person the money I allocated for gambling for that month I will definitely do that, I see no reason why I will go and gamble with the money which I know I might lose and some really needs the money, my conscience won't be clear, I won't really be happy to see someone that really need my help and am in a position that I can help the person but I didn't help.

I will first gamble and when I win I will help and if I find out I have no luck, I might just give the rest to help.

If you think you will gamble first and if you make money then you will help the person, I think you don't really have intention to help, nobody is assured of winning in gambling, you can decide to gamble with it thinking you will win then at the end you endup losing.

I'll do that, I'll send my allocated fund to that poor family I can spend my time on some other things like playing online games or playing basketball to replace my gambling activity while waiting for my next salary, you should help people that need help, especially if you personally know these people, you just never know when will you also need help, just like this poor family, and because of what you've done you'll get good karma, there's also benefit in helping people mentally, you'll feel good about it.

In the end, everyone decides for themselves what they do with their money. I understand that people start talking about this, but people are not obliged to give their money away to charities. Many people don't even think about helping poor people. I don't think you realize that quickly if you don't live in poverty. Those stories often live on TV and are far away in principle. There are undoubtedly also people who gamble and who also deposit money to charities, but whether you start gambling with your money on vacation is in principle your own choice and no obligation to anything else.

You cannot be a responsible gambler and fail to see those in need of immediate assistance due to your gaming ambitions. It is your money actually and it is your will to render help or not because sometimes even if we have the means to help, you can't do it every time, you can't help all the families in need or the poor people who have one or two challenges. However, the fact that you are using gambling as a justification to avoid helping the people who need it is not a quality of a responsible gambler, you can always play another time or month if you help people but those in need may not survive another day.
