It depends on the strategy and mostly the luck if you have a good strategy but you are not lucky then you still end up loosing,because crypto is really needs a proper understanding with focus it is a high risk kind of investment and not all investors earn on it, sometimes we need to have a limit on investing or even on trading to make a good profit.

Luck is needed when deciding to invest on no value coins since most of them are already been abandon by its dev so the risk is so high for deciding to put some bucks with it since we doesn't have any guarantee that we can get back our funds. It’s good to diversify your investment especially if those other investments have also high potentials to succeed. Aside from bitcoin, I usually save some established altcoins too because most likely when bitcoin reaches its peak price, these altcoins will also bound to follow. But that was only before when altcoins have still chances to progress, the thing that’s so hard to expect today. The reason why instead of altcoins, I go for gold and real estate so I can still diversify my investments and whatever profits I gained, I always put bigger allocation for bitcoin to increase my hodlings.

It is good to buy potential altcoins, especially those in the 20s in the market, because when the value of Bitcoin falls, for sure almost all altcoins in the market will also be pulled down. And this is an opportunity that is good to buy, and good to take advantage of, actually.

Know that every investment does not guarantee success and profitability, that’s why if you have the sufficient funds for capital, learn to diversify your investments so that if one investment fails, other investments will still have chances to succeed. However, on part of OP’s friend, he uses altcoins just to achieve his goal for bitcoin. Maybe that was only applicable when altcoins are still profitable but seeing how the altcoins these days gradually lose their value, I don’t think investing in altcoins aside from bitcoin will still be a wise move.

I agree that it is not going to be that easy, I know that it will take sometime but eventually we are going to be able to do it. Diversification is a hard thing to do because it is not easy to find these things quickly, most people end up investing into either nothing different and just top names, or they end up investing into silly stuff that shouldn't be invested.

Good for your friend and by 3 pieces  I believe  you mean he already holds 3 bitcoin  and that's amazing but no matter how promising  a shitcoin or altcoin might be, I've always groomed myself  never to get involved because they are  basically scam projects because they mostly end as a pump  and dump and it is always on rare cases where you will an altcoin doing well and ethereum is one of them.

Therefore, altcoins can be used for trading, perhaps even short-term and sometimes medium-term, for long-term investments, I would not buy altcoins, as it seems to me too risky. But for short term trading altcoins seem to be not a bad option, I follow a few of them and see that there are those who are more volatile than others, this seems like a good chance for me to trade, but I am a long term investor, I buy bitcoin and do not trade yet, I just watch and study trading when I have time for it.

Why do you think even the richest people end up taking a loan when they can afford to spend it from their pocket? It is better to trust ALT coins very little because these coins may not bring you good. Some amount of ALT coins can be trusted but should not be over trusted. Well if he said long ago then my first thought would be when 2017-2018 era where altcoins was really rising and shining back at that day because every ICO is really fresh and most of them were pretty much got listed into exchanges after the ICO was over so your friend probably used that opportunity to grab some low price altcoins especially during that Bitcoin's bull day it was really great for the traders.
