The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will take place in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10. The 32 participating teams will play in 92 games played over 16 days.

I just wanted to create a thread for the world cup but thought " I better check if there already is one '  .

Another 3 weeks of waiting until the world cup finally kicks off.
We had tickets for 2 group games of the German team but unfortunately can't go because of work. I could go by myself but that's less fun, the flight is just 2 hours to Okinawa though.

Whatever, I will watch it on TV. I think Japanese TV should broadcast some games here, at least the Japanese ones. And since my German team is in the same group I got lucky.

Speaking of which, I think the German team has a hard group. Australia we can't beat, their roster is too deep with plenty of NBA power.
We also have some NBA players such as Dennis Schröder, the Wagner brothers and ageing Daniel Theiss. Also some good Euroleague players that got 3rd place in last years Eurobasket.

Unfortunately Maxi Kleber doesn't play because of his recent beef with Dennis Schröder and Isaiah Hartenstein also won't play, don't know why, maybe because he just married.

Beating Japan (without Hachimura) should be possible but Finland will be another hard game. People expect the German team to win it but I am not so sure about that, with Lauri they have a big name and the rest of the team also has some solid talent.

Getting out of the group would already be a success, everything else is extra for our German squad.

Canada has a great team this year with a lot of high caliber NBA players: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder), Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets), RJ Barrett (New York Knicks) , Dillon Brooks (Houston Rockets), Oshae Brissett (Boston Celtics), Luguentz Dort (Oklahoma City Thunder), Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Minnesota Timberwolves), Cory Joseph (Golden State Warriors), Kelly Olynyk (Utah Jazz) and Dwight Powell (Dallas Mavericks) .

For me this team looks even better than team USA to be honest.

Yes first thing I did upon opening the thread was look for Spain's odds as I expected them to be the second favorite. I also thought it's a good chance for the Spanish team to win since the USA team is composed of young talents.

Team Canada surprised me at first but it made sense after looking at their roster.

Jokic would not play, but Micic is questionable as well, so Serbia chances getting high are depending on draw, but QF is probably maximum that we can hope for

Yeah, the Philippines is underrated when it comes to basketball so that's normal. This may be the time we can showcase our skills and maybe change that perspective.

However, it's surprising that Spain is at the top, and their odds do not seem to reflect their ranking.

Overall rankings, yes but remember USA is there so I guess that changes everything and I won't rely on that rankings anymore. Canada also is a strong team so Spain will have a hard time winning this FIBA Cup. Those who like taking risk for Spain will make some good profits if they win it.

Wow, you can watch the games? Nice. They will play here in the Philippines but I am having doubts because of the typhoon, the rain won't stop yet and there's strong wind in some parts of the Luzon region. I hope before the game starts, this typhoon will be out of our area.

Though Spain lost the Gasol brothers but they are still one of the teams to beat. It's not the players who are playing but i think it's the system that is why we always see Spain in the quarters in the FIBA World Cup.

That @12.00 is worth a try, who knows that they will be the champion again this year.

They can prove themselves if they win despite not having the Gasol brothers, and I agree with you that it's the system that makes them a good team. The last time they won a championship was in 2019 when Ricky Rubio led the team.

It's certain that Marc Gasol won't be playing.

I also doubt they'll win, but seeing them being competitive is enough for me. And since Jordan Clarkson has confirmed he will represent the country, that would give them the confidence to play harder and aim for a win despite their low ranking compared to the teams in the same bracket.

They were an underrated team, I believe, so if we believe they are going to win, then I guess we should not doubt taking those x12 odds. Despite losing the Gasol brothers, they still have the majority of the talent that brought them success, if I'm not mistaken. So whether they lose or win, I'm sure Spain is not going home without putting up a tough competition.

Yes, I also take notice that Canada will have a NBA players in their list, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are in the second spot as far as the favorites goes. So and with that kind of lineup, yeah for sure they will give the Americans a run for their money with this kind of lineup.

With the chemistry and experience of other national teams, they have a better advantage compared to the USA. The USA's advantage obviously lies in their talent, but you know, in crucial games, experience is more helpful than talent as it's about making the right decisions.

There was a lot of hype on Kai Sotto when he plays with the Magic on the Summer league, and I think the kid can still improved. And there was Jordan Clarkson as well who will be playing for the host Team Philippines if I'm not mistaken.

But even if the US is going to send like not the best team, I think they can still win this tournament and I do agree that Canada will be the second favorite specially with the like of SGA and Jamal Murray.

I don't think any of those 3 can win to be honest. Australia is good but not great.The NBA players on the team are old or very young. Spain is solid in Europe but the golden generation is gone. About France, ok they have Gobert for defence and rebounds but who else? Batum is old, Fournier can shoot, but thats it's it, Ntilikina has no impact in the NBA yet. The rest are Euroleague players.

I saw France yesterday against in their first test match against Montenegro and they didn't look impressive. Of course they just gathered and it's the first match but I am not impressed of what I saw.

Luka can make the difference against any team, so they can be a dark horse as well.

Sure. Will note that and will add it later on. Some countries are still unsure about their roster because players are not yet responding if they will play or not. Like Clarkson, there are rumors that he won't play last week I think, but it is not confirmed that he will play, it is Kai Sotto who is not yet confirmed.

I like these picks. You didn't add the strongest team which is USA and Canada and I would like to see that too. Make the FIBA more competitive by having another champion.

That's true. Slovenia can be a wild card here. Although they were defeated by Greece yesterday, this is not yet the true game where Luka magic will be different. That guy's impact for the team is in a whole different level.

And for Iran, I will surely be surprised if I could see the Immortal Hamed Haddadi playing at FIBA that was insane as Lebron James same age, and if he could still bust a move back then I surely remember his insane height has become a problem for the Philippines back then, this will be insane, but surely if Kai Sotto and Jordan Clarkson is there playing there will  be a fighting chance, now that the NBA is making progress on October 2024 this will be a great alternative for us to make the topic and surely making bets, and support our favorite team,

His trash talk would not work because this is an international competition, and teams are highly competitive. Players like Luka and the current number 1 pick, Victor Wembanyama, even said that the NBA is less physical compared to their leagues before. So, Brooks should not focus on his trash talk; instead, he should play hard and physical to live up to the expectations of the fans.

The current lineup of Canada has some players who are superstars in the NBA. However, I'm looking at the team chemistry more than the individual players on the team. With that said, I stick with the more consistent teams, particularly Spain (despite less Gasol).

The 2019 team had Harrison Barnes (2016 Olympics) and Mason Plumlee (2014 World Cup). And every other U.S. team comprised of NBA players also had at least two guys with Senior-Team experience. Even the first team of NBA players (1992 Dream Team) had five – Patrick Ewing (1984 Olympics), Michael Jordan (’84), Christian Laettner (1990 World Championship), Chris Mullin (’84) and David Robinson (1986 World Championship and 1988 Olympics) – who had played on the Senior level previously.

Every member of the 2023 team will be playing in his first Senior-level international tournament. It’s different than anything else they’ve ever experienced, especially when it comes to the single-elimination, knockout round.

However, despite that, they are still the number 1 favorite to win. I'm thinking, aren't the bookies just making them overvalued as they know the bettors will bite on the odds? When we talk about "Team USA," it's a popular team and they have more gold compared to other teams. This popularity might influence the odds and make them seem more favorable than they actually are.
