The biggest upset here so far is the early exit of France since they still have many line-ups that finished 3rd in the last FIBA World Cup. They also have good NBA players like Gobert and Fournier.

They seem to be facing some bad luck. Despite having an NBA player on their team, chemistry appears to be a problem. Additionally, it seems that Gobert might not be in his prime anymore, which is evident from his performance in his NBA team.

France was ranked in the top 5: as per ranking in https://www.fiba.basketball/rankingmen. The unexpected outcome is a significant setback for their national team and could potentially impact their confidence in international games. It's crucial for them to assess their team and identify the underlying issues. This marks the first time they've experienced an early exit in the FIBA World Cup since Gobert became a part of the team if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I also believe Gobert is no longer in his prime and Batum is also old. But still, they should be enough to at least proceed in the next round. That game against Latvia was very winnable and they were leading more than 10 in the 4th quarter before the rally. So I agree that luck is also not on their side in this tournament.

If they're ranked 5 in the world then they will be dropped hard once this tournament officially ends and updates are available. Maybe outside the top 10 already? I wonder what France look like if Wembanyama played. The Spurs decided to excuse him from the national team for further development. But he and Gobert will have their chance to team up and get back their glory in the 2024 Paris Olympics. That will be the biggest basketball event and at the same time, their nation is the host. Should be fun to watch.

They will undoubtedly improve, especially considering that Wembanyama is continually training. Once he represents his country, his skills will likely see significant growth. Being the number one overall pick, he's in a different league compared to Gobert, who was a first-round pick at 27th overall in 2013. I anticipate a major improvement from him. Perhaps France will make a strong comeback in the future. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing how Wemby performs in the upcoming regular season, and I hope he won't disappoint us.

There's certainly a lot of hype surrounding Wemby, and while he's demonstrated his abilities in international games, he has yet to prove himself in the NBA. However, if he evolves into a true superstar similar to Luka, there's no doubt he will also excel in international competitions like the FIBA World Cup. Take Luka, for example; he's currently leading Slovenia to a perfect record of 3 wins and 0 losses in the first stage, and his NBA experience has undoubtedly been instrumental in their recent success.

Other than that, they could send Wembanyama to play and get some experience because FIBA is also a good experience ground to help him in the Spurs in his rookie year but I understand the Spurs when they excused him in this instance because they cannot afford if ever Wemby will get injured as he is somehow vulnerable to it specially after the fact that he is the #1 overall pick. This is their lottery and they will protect him whatever it will cost them.

This is their lottery and they will protect him whatever it will cost them.

They may also be factoring in the risk of injuries. Wembanyama is their franchise player, being a top pick, and he's expected to make significant contributions to the team. In physical games like FIBA, injuries are a genuine concern, and if Wembanyama were to get injured, it could jeopardize the future of the San Antonio Spurs, especially since they have been grappling with rebuilding the team. As a coach, he likely can't afford to witness such an unfortunate event.

We may see more hypes in his NBA career, for now, we can't conclude as we are not seeing him playing yet against the stars of stars of NBA.

He will be tested once he faces well-known super teams and if how he will handle the game giving his impressive numbers if possible.

I believe that as long as he maintains his health, his journey in the NBA will continue to improve. The primary weakness I see in him currently is his body size; he appears quite thin compared to the big men in the NBA. However, with more focused physical training, he has the potential to build muscle and become stronger. I'm confident that his team will work to ensure that this physical development doesn't make him injury-prone.

However, if he was allowed to play, would it change the fate of France?

I do believe that we can't really consider Gobert as someone who would help a team out. France is getting a new star though, not that he is ready yet, but in the future he could make them go better. They do have a few players coming up soon enough and I think it is going to be a good one, it is going to end up with a good thing for them.

Finding a new generation of players that will play well together for a long time is a hard thing, most teams do not find them at the same time. You find one star, and then another 5-6 years later, and then another 5-6 years later, so the first star becomes 30+ years old by the time you get the third one and they  can't grow together. Finding some all around same age to each other is a tough one.

Yeah he definitely would make a difference.  He played well in the euroleague and that type of play would carry over for FIBA.  It's differemt than the NBA so I have more reservation on how he will handle the rigors of nba ball.  Smart though no need for him to stress his body before his first season in the NBA.

It's unbeleavable that nobody isn't talking about today's games... Fun things started and we have some upsets. I already said that Latvia and Slovenia looks understimated too much, so, their wins didn't surprised me that much. But what Brazil did against Canada is huge upset.
So happy not just about Lithuania win, but also how confident we played against elite team Greece, it was difficult to predict that we will win by 25 points. We're in 1/4 final already, don't want to get hyped too much, but I think we are capable to beat USA, after I saw how Montenegro played against them. Monenegro forced USA to play serious until very end. And Montengro managed to do it with 22 turnovers.
Italy made another upset by beating Serbia. At one moment it already looked that Serbia will run away, they already had 16 points lead. But Italy made comeback with amazing Fontechio performance (30 points). There was some chaos in the end, but ot's typical thing for Pozzecco team
Latvia - win against current World Champions is serious statement. And they done it without injured Bertans!
Puerto Rico win against Dominican Republic probably can be counted as upset too. Seems that both teams forgot about defense, scored 199 points combined. This time 39 points of KAT wasn't enough for a win.
Brazil win against Canada probably is biggest upset in tournament so far. And Brazil did it basically without 3-pointers. So, Canada is vulnerable too. Now situation in this group before last round looks crazy interesting with all 4 teams having 3 wins.

For me its insane how Serbia dropped the win against Italy and complicated the group . Bogdanovic wasnt in the zone at all and couldnt hit a three at all and that made the difference. Serbia could have finished them when they had a momentum in the third quarter and ended up losing a won game. I think they will pass the group but it made things complicated a lot now.

Congrats to your LTU team, it was as easy as expected but you always have to win it first, even though it looks easy on paper.
Brazil surely was the upset of the tournament. Betting on them would have paid you at least 14:1 on a good site, that's a decent payday I guess  Wink .
Anyway, now the group situation is insane. Spain or Canada play for 1 spot, just as Brazil and Latvia, who would have thought. So Spain or Canada is out, big surprise.

For me this is very interesting to see as well as this group brings the next opponent of team Germany in the quarterfinals. Don't know who I want them to face actually, first it was between Spain and Canada, which we can beat both, but now it's basically all 4 teams possible. If we beat Slovenia, Spain wins we play Latvia or Brazil, if Canada wins and Brazil wins we play Canada, if Canada wins and Latvia wins we get Spain.

And more scenarios if we lose, so many things to look at, hahahah.

Maybe a lot has changed as they got more big man on this one and more likely have taken some wins. But we don't know, even Spain the number one team has been beaten by Latvia. This means that this FIBA is really full of surprises and a lot of teams that have come to be expected perform at their best are not guarantee of a win. It's just sad that our national team hasn't taken any win and if they lose to China this Saturday, our team is gonna be part of history. Yeah, but very bad history of being a team of not having any win as a host country.

I got so sleepy last night with medicines.  Cry Thank you for the updates though.

2 bets won for me.
Yes, that is true. The odds are underestimating the Slovenians too far. Luka Doncic is the rising star of the NBA and he cannot be underestimated too. I think they weighed it with how many NBA players are there in one team which is wrong. Slovenians are damn strong. With the help of Mike Tobey dominating the rebounds, Luka found his help and of course their other roleplayers.

Lithuania won too. Yes! Just like I thought, Greece isn't really strong. It's just that their group consists of two weaker teams that's why they are in the 2nd round. Man, I should've maximized it to -7.5 and take a higher profit. But it's okay a win is still a win.

Latvia! Wow! Imagine that, defeating the EuroBasket champions Spain. It's amazing and I bet they are celebrating today but they cannot relax just yet because their next stop is Brazil which defeated Canada. No NBA players and yet they made an upset. Probably one of the biggest upsets.

If you managed to get Brazil at those odds then congratulations, those are expected for taking down the heavy favorites to win and possibly be in the finals with so many NBA players  being in their roster.
Didn't know Wemby was playing in this tournament until checking out the last few posts on this thread.
With Gobert not doing so good France needs somebody with his stature to take his place in their line-up if they want to advance out of these group stage games.
Watching the Finland vs Venezuela match and they were hanging around during the third quarter but it looks like Finland are finally pulling away from the heavy underdogs now. Same with South Sudan, but the difference is they were always ontop of their game against Angola as it is now half time in their match being up 15pts.

Really a wow scene that they've made on this World Cup. But that's what it is, champions are unbeatable but they have proven themselves once. It is that Latvia was stronger on them on that match and won against them.

Good luck on their next match, Canada is also strong but they've beaten a strong opponent so anything is possible.

No NBA players and yet they made an upset. Probably one of the biggest upsets.
This World Cup has been full of upsets and unexpected wins or maybe we're just belittling and expecting a lot from the known and unknown teams.

A good start for the Philippines, currently leading by 7 points and keeping China scoreless. This could be the night they secure their first win as they are currently 0-3. I hope the Philippines can finally achieve victory tonight; it's much needed to reduce criticism, especially as the host country, and being winless so far.

Best of luck to the Philippines in securing this final win!

Yes, they should be fighting here, at least get one win and that's it and bury this as a learning experience for the team. Slight lead for them at the half. And it should boost their confidence here.

The Filipino fans are still supporting Gilas no matter what, even if they boo their own coach which is very weird. I guess someone has to be blame though, and usually it is the coach.

It has been an entertaining game so far, and both teams seem to have a good understanding of each other's strategies. The first half has concluded with China holding a one-point lead. In this tournament, the Philippines tends to struggle in the second half, but they can't afford that now if they want to secure a win in this competition. The Philippines' persistent issue with three-point shooting seems to persist, but fortunately, China is also struggling in this regard. However, it's worth noting that China's free throw performance is significantly better than the Philippines', so the home team needs to address this aspect as well.

Gilas have the advantage over China unfortunately, they are not using it well and we are down.
The fans should energized the team so they can go all out, this is their last game and I'd hope that they can finally get the win or else Filipinos will surely bashed the whole coaching staff again. Looking forward for the quarter finals with the top teams here in our country, can't wait to see other teams too.
