And it is also worth remembering that many millions of people have the idea firmly ingrained in their heads that cryptocurrencies are used, as a rule, for criminal activity. And it is used only to hide money transfers. Despite the absurdity of such an attitude towards cryptocurrency in general, and despite the fact that fiat money, cash, for example, is much more often used by criminals, public opinion still gives cryptocurrencies such a "black mark".
By the way, this is also a very good argument for hiding information about your casino games with cryptocurrency payments from other employees at work and, accordingly, from your employer, of course.

Yes, besides that, wherever we work or socialize, we must also always be aware of the people around us because not everyone around us will do good, it could be a threat to us in the future. Regarding cryptocurrency, of course, everyone has different arguments, if someone thinks that cryptocurrency is part of a criminal act, in my opinion that person has not really understood the benefits or advantages of cryptocurrency today. It is clear that cryptocurrency is currently in great demand and sought after by cryptopers as a digital currency that is increasingly advanced and developing and people who are good at choosing cryptocurrency will have a lot of money because they use cryptocurrency correctly and appropriately.
But it is worth remembering how 8-10 years ago the media constantly reported on the criminal use of cryptocurrencies. Yes, perhaps even now cryptocurrency is often mentioned in connection with crimes and payment for all sorts of illegal actions in certain criminal groups. The processing of mass consciousness in this direction of "denigrating" cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies in general still continues, in my opinion. Therefore, those people who do not have cryptocurrency in principle and are not interested in this technology at all, under the influence of the processing of consciousness by the media, a stable opinion has been created about the criminal nature of this money. And if your colleagues at work do not have cryptocurrency at all, then it is quite likely that, having learned about your payments in cryptocurrency, they will pawn you and inform your superiors.

It doesn't take much effort to find out one of the reasons that led to his dismissal:

However, the bank also claimed that the employee was a “habitual gambler” who played online gambling games that use crypto as an in-game currency.

Crypto gambling games are illegal in South Korea. However, many South Korean players use overseas servers and foreign platforms.

Is he a member of this forum?

I don't agree with the dismissal, but unfortunately the bank will want employees who are more worthy of their role. The bank may have assessed the player's conduct as a threat to the institution.

Isnt employer should give no damn about what their employee does during their free time? Where is tolerance? Should employer fire anyone who has passion for something? For example never hire a guy whos passion is gym. Because at work he will think about his training program, might get injured at gym and miss work, will read bodybuilding forums during work. Dont forget that the story happened in South Korea, not in North Korea where everything is much strict.

Yes I agree with your statement only if the employee really does his usual activities in his spare time or outside of his working hours and if that is the case then of course it should not be a problem and will not result in dismissal, but if it turns out that he really violates company regulations in terms of time then of course the decision to dismiss is something that is reasonable to issue.
One thing I will say is that it is impossible for the company to issue a decision to dismiss the employee without reason, most likely regardless of whether he violates or not it seems because the object is the habit of being involved in gambling which is an activity that can only be done by spending some money while he works at a bank so that is the reason the bank prefers to dismiss him to minimize the possibility of unwanted things that could harm the company.

When a thing turns habitual surely it'll kill time. One such thing had taken place with employee. It is not about gambling, as said whatever he had done apart from his assigned task during the work hours is going to stop his productivity as well as the progress of the firm. This is well understood by the Boss and he had fired the employee.
Yes, all bad habits that are done during working hours will indeed result in decrease in worker productivity, especially if it is gambling activity, they will not focus on what to do because an employee must really maintain professional attitude and of course it is their own risk when the leadership takes some harsh consequences to their worker that makes mistakes.
But in context like this, no one will really know the truth except from the leader himself and his workers, anyone can lie.
It's wrong for employees to engage in some activity during work hours but they still have their lives to live, they can do something at times during their free period during work time or break time, the nature of the job matters and so long as it doesn't affect their job performance, they are good to go in my opinion

Even this guy in the OP claimed that he didn't do it during the work hour and the court did not argue about that except for the use of cryptocurrency. But I wonder when cryptocurrency suddenly becomes an issue in a country like South Korea, if not that the judge is anti-crypto.

It has already been discussed earlier that the mention of cryptocurrency immediately creates negative associations with criminal activity in many people who are completely unfamiliar with it. So it all also depends on how a specific employer or even a judge, as you mentioned, treats cryptocurrency. And since the attitude of these people can be negative and they immediately associate such an employee with offenses and participation in illegal payments, then the decision to dismiss becomes quite natural.
And also the decision to reinstate in the position by a court decision, too.

It is a completely normal process when cryptocurrencies were previously presented on TV as something incomprehensible to people who are accustomed to traditional financial assets, and they also tried to denigrate them by saying that they are used for something bad. But we must not forget that the dollar is also used for something bad, but no one even talks about banning the dollar. If a fired employee had bet in dollars, he would also probably have been fired because gambling is prohibited in the workplace. In short, you can play, the main thing is that the employee was not noticed playing, lol.

Did he do this during the work process? If so, then it would be quite reasonable to fire this employee. Otherwise, I am on the side of the employee who is not guilty of anything, and this was the reason for the dismissal. Well, they just found something to cling to. You can't go to court empty-handed. So they found an explanation. A fairly banal case. This happens every day. Only the court became a third party and that is why this case received such resonance.

I work in finance, and hold a position dealing with a heck of a lot more money than a basic banking employee.  What I want to know is if they were able to prove that he was actually gambling during working time/hours?  If he wasn't then yeah this is really fucked up.  My boss knows very well that I am in to bitcoin. I have even invited some of my team members to some of my charity auctions/contest like the pumpkin contest and she's got no problem with it.

gambling is different from auctions or buying and selling, wherever gambling is prohibited in a company if caught then they will be dismissed, maybe rules have been made and gambling is strictly prohibited for employees because it can affect employee performance, this incident is not only in Korea and in my country there are also employees who are dismissed because they are involved in gambling,

In South Korea, A bank employee was found to be playing online games that use crypto as its in game currency. The bank claimed that the employee is a habitual gambler and fired him from his job. The ex-employee naturally raised his concern to HR as he thinks it is unfair dismissal but the HR rejected his appeal which led him to file a lawsuit. In the end, even the court sided with the bank. Even though the ex-employee claims that he never played during work hours and that his habits did not interfere with his work quality, the court rules it to be undignified to be gambling with crypto.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired?

I think this is a tricky situation, because in most jobs I don't think it would matter what the person is doing, most of the time.

But, in a place where the employee has access to financial information, when there's a gambling issue, it could be very bad for the business.

A gambler that is desperate will do anything, cook the books, etc, to try to get some money, and the business will likely be affected.

I think it shouldn't matter, but I can see why a business owner might want to protect his finances from a gambler, crypto, or fiat.

Isnt this stuff going against on someones privacy when it comes into the things when you are really that dealing up with something but there are really those instances on which there are those people who do
able to see or look up on what are the things you've been dealing. You are working in a bank and pretty sure that they will really be that too sensitive when it comes into this aspect on which
if they do know that their employees are really that dealing up with gambling then they would really be definitely making up some action on which they will really be that trying out to make up
some possible firing or giving some warnings because they are assuming about into other potential problems that might arise. There might be some other violations as well on which actions will really be that imposed.

They just noticed that he was playing, but if he had done it secretly, like thousands of the same workers in completely different workplaces, he would have continued to work quietly further at his workplace. Thanks to this story, many will now think about whether it is worth playing where it is prohibited in order to lose their jobs. Of course, there will be those who can easily find a new job, unless of course there is a note that the employee was fired for playing. Then after this, no one will want to hire him at all. In general, it is better to play at home and in a relaxed state than to strain and make even less profitable bets due to the constant fear of being discovered.

However, I believe that this employee was unfairly detained and had the right to continue working. If a person is productive at work, he can do other things. Remember Dr. House and his bad manners, but he was productive! And isn't that the only thing required in the workplace? The main thing is to do your job well, and if the deadlines are not missed, then you can gamble or bet.
And there is a shortage of good workers in the world now.

I'm asking because if gambling is legal in the country, the company can only restrict their employees not to gamble on their work premises, but whatever's done after that moment should be any of their concern unless they notice their behaviour having a negative impact on them towards their attitude to work.

Even if gambling is allowed in their country, it doesn't mean that the employees can only be restricted in their office itself. It doesn't look good for someone specially working on a bank to be known to be a gambler.

The reputation of the bank itself is on the line here and most likely before you are getting hired, there could be evaluations on you with regards to gambling that you are not aware of. So most likely this is what the bank holds and that's why they fired the employee for playing or gambling.

gambling is different from auctions or buying and selling, wherever gambling is prohibited in a company if caught then they will be dismissed, maybe rules have been made and gambling is strictly prohibited for employees because it can affect employee performance, this incident is not only in Korea and in my country there are also employees who are dismissed because they are involved in gambling,
Is gambling legal in your country? And those people who get dismissed gamble during work hours, break time, or when they are in their own comfort zone?

I'm asking because if gambling is legal in the country, the company can only restrict their employees not to gamble on their work premises, but whatever's done after that moment should be any of their concern unless they notice their behaviour having a negative impact on them towards their attitude to work.
Well, the reason why the bank worker was fired is probably because of he was gambling at his or her working hours and that's bad. But the court decision is probably based on crypto involved, but since the bank worker claimed that his gambling actions didn't reduce his or her job qualitys they should have given him another chance as everyone deserves a second chance. But I am sure that if the ex bank worker was gambling at free time (like during break period) he wouldn't have been fired for gambling even though crypto currency was involved or not. What really makes the bank to fired him was because he gambled during his working hours.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired?

Well I don't think this is a point of hate on cryptocurrency considering the presume rivalry of btc and fiat since bank is concerned but this is about negligence against due diligence. That layed off banker would have left traces that his gambling or life style after work hour was affecting his performance. In fact, they might have perceived him as a gambling addict that doesn't pay adequate attention to work details and customers, he may have being found wanting that made all the management members to decide letting him go. He would have been seen checking up on his phone series of times with complaints coming from colleagues even if he was not actually gambling but he would be addicted to his phone. For me, I don't believe an online addict gambler won't have to check on his phone during 8am - 4/5pm work hours for a week on a stretch, this is not possible  Grin.

If his performance was top notch then they won't take such decision and the illusion of crypto and fiat rivalry is adequately out of place because I have not read anywhere that banks had meeting on laying off workers found gambling with crypto.

In fact, his case is like a drunk whose performance at work is always affected because he is always found intoxicated. Of course, he would be sacked.

It would really be just that too shallow if they will really be just making those firing their employee if they wont really be seeing something serious or simply needs up some immediate action. If they do find out that your gambling activity is already coming into a point on which it is really that on the severe side then its normal that they would really be having those presumptions that it might getting worst even more as the time passes by and just like on what everyone is really that assuming into this point that on the moment that it do gets worst then there's the possibility that it would really be that having that kind of involvement on using up banks funds if a certain person or employee wont be able to control their gambling urge on which they will really be trying out to suppress out these things while its still early. If there are some alleged about some legal violations that it is really that attached into this one then it wont really be that shocking that there would really be that specific consequences to that, im not really just that aware on whats the laws about cryptocurrency on the said country whether they are really that against with it or not, but actually the reasons isnt really just that being too clear.

It's similar to the story i came across on the forum, a nurse was fired for gambling on duty, it's quite funny he did something like that knowing the vitality of his job..I don't blame the employer for firing this person because it's a sign of incompetence and lack of self-control.. This is why gambling should be kept private especially if you are the type of person that works in a cooperate or private firm , no One is stopping you from doing what you like but engaging in it during work hours can put clients in jeopardy.. firing the employee was a good decision.

I don't agree with the dismissal, but unfortunately the bank will want employees who are more worthy of their role. The bank may have assessed the player's conduct as a threat to the institution.
Well, even if we conclude that the employee has nothing to be guilty about, but the fact remains that the employer is more powerful than the employee. So no matter how hard he will defend himself, as long as he’ll be the target of his employer for a dismissal, obviously the employee can’t do nothing about it, because even the court can be bought by its employer, just saying.
