It's very hard to find people trying to improve themselves after losing a job, so they can stand a better chance in advancing themselves when they get another job. You don't have to blame them, because most people survive on their salary. So when they lose their job, the first thing on their mind is to get another one, so they can survive,  rather than thinking of acquiring a new skill to help them get a better job, or make them do better in a new job. It's really good to acquire new skills to help you fit better in a new job or to improve your position in your present job, but like I said it's very difficult for most people to do it when their salary barely sustains them or when they don't even have a job.

I agree that when a job is a matter of survival, losing it will mean severe anxiety, even panic, especially if searching for a new place takes a lot of time and a person does not have a financial cushion. Therefore, I really like it when the state takes responsibility for an employee who lost their job, as happens in Switzerland. There, if a person worked for 1+ year in one place, in case of dismissal, the state will pay them 80% of their salary from their last workplace for a certain period (also a year, if I am not mistaken). And in this way, a person can calmly look for a new position while developing missing skills.

This is a valid topic and I have few things I want to add to what you said, sometimes when people lose their job, it is not because they weren't good at what they do, it wasn't because they weren't serious or skillful enough, sometimes the company takes you off and simply replace you with who they know, like their family relative, close friends and all of that. We have seen such thing happen. I'm sure most of us are aware of this things, so you still expect such person to still take his time to reflect? Reflect on what exactly? I will say this, no skills is a waste, if you ever lose your job, go ahead and start hunting for a new one, you don't need to stay at home and reflect, you might end up being depressed or run into debts. When life kicks you down, you stand up, dust yourself and keep moving. Do not look back, keep your head up and high and move forward. You can go ahead and acquire a new skills when you know your skills isn't enough, because you can't be a master to everything...

Often the job search process drags on not at all through the fault of the job seeker, and certainly not because of a lack of the necessary skills or experience. Nowadays, to break through to a real recruiter, you have to pass ATS systems, and if you don't know how to tailor a resume, you simply won't be able to get to an actual conversation, and accordingly, fight for the position. And these systems are constantly changing, a person simply can't keep up with them, their knowledge becomes outdated, because job searching is not their main activity!

You have said the keyword there.
One needs to tailor their resume according to what they are applying for.
And that's to make it easy for the recruiters to see if you're the one who fits the position that they are hiring for.
Because if there's no modification for the resume that we're sending and it's just a bunch of achievements, etc that doesn't interest them.
They'll just ignore and move to the next candidate. That's why impress them already with the resume because it only takes them seconds to view it.

I relized that CV is still important on screening mechanism because showing what we ever did but i think it is useless if we don't build capabilities and tangible evidence which show what we are capable of doing. We can summarizing our proof of work through our portofolio. I think portofolio not only show our skill but what actually we built, what we already solved or accomplished using specific skill and it create inbound opportunity as a way recruiter find our talent based on our works.

My experience as job seeker after graduate, i was not focus only making my self look employable but i choose becoming demonstrably valuable, at that time i show my portofolio during interview test and its show my competence, along with my education and certification give support to my qualification and i see it a clearest picture of my quality and capability. For now days i believe portofolio can make HRD official say "can we talk to this person ?"

Honestly, money is very important in the lives of everyone but one doesn't have to wait until they have the fund before learning a skill, which I totally agree with you on because technology have make things easier for everyone where they can learn different skills. But, the reason people find it difficult is because, they always look for  shortcuts to make money without being patient enough to make the money.

Learning a skill and practicing it are different things. A job is good not only for its monetary compensation, but also for providing a constant environment for developing certain skills. No matter how much you study something theoretically on your own, until there is an environment to develop it in practice and a community of professionals working with you, it will remain at an embryonic level.
A conducive environment to showcase that which have been learned is the most important thing to consider before going for skill acquisition. I am a perfect example of one of those that have spent time, energy  and resources In acquiring different kinds of skills capable of transforming my life but because I lack the desired opportunity required for the materialisation of those hidden potentials, its same as not having any skill. Many spent time with hope it will be beneficial without knowing it is useless if its not practiced.

Both are important, CV and portfolio.
You'll have a stronger chance of getting hired if you're going to build portfolio while tailoring your resume.
And don't just tailor that resume because for every different position that you're likely to apply for, you'll have to modify it specifically for that job post.

I get what you mean, it can be really frustrating when one lacks the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve acquired after spending lots of time and resources to acquire that skill because a skill is only useful and values when it’s actually put in practice. I know a lot of people who, due to their enthusiasm and optimism for a particular skill and knowledge, went ahead to spend time, resources and energy to acquire that skill, yet lack the environment and opportunity to actually make use of these skills or turn them into something meaningful. That’s why it’s just as crucial to create avenues to practice and showcase one’s skills as it is to learn and develop them.

So should people not acquire skills when they have the opportunity just because this? The idea might not be bad but I don't think that should make us not to go ahead to acquire the skill, opportunities comes when we least expect them, we can also find ourselves in condition that we don't need to suffer much to happy our skills, let's just get the skills first since is the first thing to do, before we can talk about application, we should get the skills, I understand the importance of practicing your skills, because it develops you the more, but we have to acquire it first.

I think you missed my point. Not saying that it’s not good to acquire a skill, besides they say no knowledge is a waste. But I think it’s illogical to acquire a skill that you have absolutely to idea of where to utilize that skill when you could actually use that time spent in acquiring that skill to acquire another skill that you can easily find a place to and opportunity to utilize, improve and develop that skill, because what will only happen is that you’ll still most likely remain idol, and not get the chance to showcase your skill, and this could even make you begin to forget about that skill, because you only get better and improve on something when you’re presented with the opportunity to keep doing that thing.

If we only focus on working for someone else or being an employee, we will inevitably face unemployment, sometimes due to the bankruptcy of the company we work for or for other reasons. Indeed, some people who have just been laid off from a company are always busy looking for new jobs to avoid unemployment. They end their unemployment by finding a new job, hopefully at a better company than the previous one, so they won't be laid off.

It's truly unfortunate that many of them don't have the time to start a business for many reasons, including a lack of capital and pressing living expenses. Ultimately, they end up looking for other work. However, everyone's circumstances are different, so I think the most unfortunate are those who have substantial capital but don't want to become entrepreneurs.

Unemployment period can be overwhelming mostly because it will be difficult to fend and carter for basic needs during this period. Although it is the best time to learn and upskill on different skills. It is also a time to try out businesses to see if there are other areas of interest that can be developed. Finding a job is one difficult task even when the a person is skilled. Most times it requires a long time hunting to secure a reliable job that can make one comfortable.
You've made a good point here. Even with all the skills, finding a new job right away isn't easy. I know people who spent months looking for a new position. It was an incredibly difficult time for them. I can't even imagine how they survived without a source of income. They likely took on a huge amount of loans and debt just to get by. It's scary, but it's a harsh reality that puts everything in perspective.

I went through something similar myself when I was laid off from my job and had a significant amount of debt. I had absolutely no money. Under those circumstances, all sorts of bad thoughts creep into your head. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

A resume is an important step, but I'm really dissatisfied with what it has turned into nowadays. Your resume isn't supposed to show what you actually did, but rather match the phrasing found in the description of a specific role. That is the only way someone will get in touch with you. And if those specific phrases aren't there, the recruiter won't bother to delve into your experience and relate it to the job requirements. They will simply reject you with some AI-generated response from a no-reply email and that's it.

Experience is very important in any form of recruitment because it's your experience that will give the recruiter a clue of what you are capable of doing and how you can react to situations. Anybody can claim a skill or a role, but not everyone can actually perform such role they claim. This is why your résumé is to show what you've done so that you will have a better judgement. It is through that people also lie in their résumé and claim to have a given experience that they know nothing about same way people include skills they don't know in their applications.

Applying based on the role the recruiter is seeking is good, but presenting your achievements or areas of previous experiences can help the recruiter during decision making. A résumé is just a bunch of educational qualifications that one may not actually defend. That your CV said that you studied Banking and Finance does not mean you can perfectly suit in a bank job, how good you are in your skill must be queried to be able to accept you in such recruitment.

A person’s first instinct when they lose their job is to find a new one right away. But it wouldn’t hurt to take a few time off and reflect why you lost the job. Maybe there’s something you lack. Maybe there’s something you can improve. Maybe you can invest in yourself more and learn new things. Learn new skill sets. Explore and experience new more things that could help you land a better and more stable job in the future.

Unfortunately not everyone has the privilege to not work and focus on themselves that’s why they never improve in terms of the job they land on. Since they don’t have the time to focus on themselves and their skills, they remain only on a specific level and their wages are also the same.

You're extremely right, in the state of sadness or sorrow reflection can help you to refresh and reset your mind. Loosing your job is not the end of life, there are many great opportunities ahead. So you have to prepare yourself before taking the next step. You can't let the present define you, gaining more skills and experience might provide new job opportunities for you. But you must develop self-reliance, self-control, self-accountability, self-care and self-awareness in order to achieve self-determination. You will not have the ability to focus on your work if you did not focus on yourself firstly.

The problem with some employers is that no matter what a workers does it will never satisfy them. And sincerely speaking, you cannot work beyond your power, ability or capability. So anything that is going to cause internal bleeding to you the best thing is to avoid it. Any work that is going to affect you mentally, emotionally or psychologically staying away from it will be beneficial to you. Prioritising your life over your job is important, because you can replace your job but not your life.
A friend of mine recently told me he can't work anymore. Oddly enough, there's more work, but his salary hasn't increased. He's decided to quit and look for another job. I tried to talk him out of it, as I understand perfectly well he'll have to look for a new job for several weeks or even longer. And how will he live? He still hasn't answered that. Apparently, he has some kind of reserve for such emergencies.

He also explained his decision by saying he's burned out at work. Not only is he emotionally unable to cope, but he's also finding it physically difficult. Was it the right decision?

-snip-
However it is good to take a break after losing a job and look at your shortcomings but it is not possible for everyone to take a long break. Many people are forced to quickly enter a new job if they have family expenses. Therefore, it seems more realistic to learn something new every day in addition to looking for a job.

And I don't think it is right to see losing a job only as your own failure. Many times people lose their jobs due to changes in the company's situation or technology, recently we see after AI adoption. So, it is wise to gradually update yourself, understanding which skills will be useful in the future, while trying to maintain income.

I always laugh when people say learn new skills set as if it's something that you can do in a day or week and start making money, someone ho lost his job and start looking for other can't wait because they have mouths to feed, such people can't take such advice.

They lose a job and they will need to get another instantly, it's why I always advice my friends to learn skills before responsibility comes, a friend of mine is married and his job isn't paying him enough, he can't even find another because they pay less to the current one.

Today he can't learn any digital skills because of his wife and daughter, learning digital skills will consume his time and making money from any digital skills takes time too, that's like saying his wife and daughter will go months with hungry stomachs.

I agree with you a lot. Especially, when a person loses their job or is under financial pressure, it does not always seem realistic to me to learn a new skill and then start earning. Because the first thing for them is to arrange an income to support their family. If they are not currently working, they should first find a job that they already have experience in and that can generate some income quickly.
However, I think there is a point to be looked at differently here. Learning a skill may not bring them immediate cash, but learning a small practical skill in addition to their current job can be very useful in the future and can also reduce the risk of falling into similar problems. So it is more reasonable to see it as a long-term preparation rather than an immediate solution.
The most important thing in this discussion for me is that it is not right to give everyone the same advice. One person's financial situation, family responsibilities, and time at hand - everything needs to be considered. Because the situation I am in today, another person may be in a completely different situation and the same advice may not work for them.

Only someone who has savings can afford to take some time to figure things out after losing their job. That’s exactly why I always say that everyone should have an emergency fund. Because it’s scary to imagine being fired and immediately having to look for another job, sometimes being forced to accept anything just to keep earning money. Then you get stuck in that job, constantly tired, with neither the energy nor the time to look for something better. And honestly, that’s a very difficult situation to be in.
