Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.

For me, I don't think it's fair to make an employee work during holidays. I think it should be voluntary - if you want to come to work, you can, but if you don't, you can stay home and celebrate with your family and friends.

Giving employees official holidays during their festive seasons should be part of their benefit package. I say "their festive seasons" because Christians may want to celebrate Christmas, Muslims may want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and Hindus may want to celebrate Diwali.

This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.

By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.

Closing offices during holidays for like two weeks might affect business revenue, but how much?

You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
In my country, almost everyone and everything works during holidays, only people who are employed in the public sector have a guaranteed day off during holidays. Since it's a poor country, people have no other option but to work during holidays and since local or international companies know this situation, they use this advantage and create such a working environment that they make people work or they won't receive their salary.
The benefit of this situation is that shops and markets are open, you don't need to buy anything in advance. You can go out anywhere anytime during Christmas or New Year and shops will be open 24/7.

Actually, to talk about the obligation to work on holidays, first of all we have to understand the type of work. There are some public jobs that people have to consider. Since the people will take precedence first there one has to sacrifice one's interests or the employees have to sacrifice their interests, such as defense workers. And if it comes to private jobs then it would not be right to impose the obligation to work on holidays. However, if the employer wants to get the work done then there must be a financial incentive. So that the employees are willing to work on holidays on their own.

Sometimes there are companies that do not pay their workers on holidays, in fact I think only a few companies pay their workers on holidays and those who get it are very lucky to be paid even outside of their working days.

Are there any differences between countries, and have you worked for any companies or businesses? Because I have worked for many companies before and most of them pay salary + bonus for employees who work on holidays. Or on big holidays like national holidays, we get paid 3-5 times the normal salary. I don't think that if a company or business doesn't pay higher wages or decent bonuses, people will want to work for them.

That’s the way it’s done at least, no company or organization that employs labor would keep you away from the holidays without giving some of those festivity to their employees themselves. It must not necessarily be that your paid double or triple of your salary or wages. It could be some increments as bonuses either in monetary form or some products that could help you enjoy the season. It would be wrong should all the industries or organizations shutdown just to observe some holidays. What’s obtainable is a reduction in work force as these are essential services that are needed to enjoy even the holidays it’s self not to mention, it all contributes to the economy.

Absolutely true words. The prize is that I think the best type of vacation would be simple work that is paid double, while workers have the right to choose whether they want to work or can stay home if they really want to rest and be with their family. In this way, those who need money can get it for their work, and those who do not really need it can rest. Because we are all very tired during the year, and everyone has their own recovery period after a year of work. For example, on the 2nd I already felt that I had managed to completely reboot)

that is true, if it is something that can be useful for many people, of course some public jobs must be done, even though going to work on holidays is something important, which must be done by those who need to serve the community and cannot be postponed any longer, unlike going to work on holidays in the private sector, it can be reconsidered.

I have never seen any public job holder do work during holidays here is on my country. Its depend on countries, factories and also depend on service what you are doing actually. However if it is on the production site where making production 24/7 it depends which day they are select as a holidays and also their is no pressure to do it as for sure. Surely we need a holidays to make fresh our mind and give better service and afford to the factory or work place where you are servicing. I will never provide service if i don’t get the holidays or weekend. It will put pressure on my mind. So it is different from me not to work on the holidays or weekend.

This is the reason why it's better off to be self employed because some employers take advantage and use their employers excessively. Personally, I can't work in a firm that doesn't give breaks especially during the holidays. There are some organizations that didn't go on the xmas and new year break, I don't think this is ideal. The holidays meant to rest, this is a vital thing that the body needs to function properly. it doesn't matter whether it's a private sector or not, working during holidays shouldn't be made compulsory because it's their right to take those breaks for themselves.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.

It's not as simple as that. It depends on the nature of work the company is doing.
Even I am myself a salaried employee but my company doesn't force us to work during holidays.
Ofcourse, there should be 2-3 people at least to support during the holidays but the rest of the people can take their time off.
But I believe that cannot happen with every company. Just an example, food shops, grocery stores etc... have employees working during the holidays too.
If they don't operate during the holidays then how would the rest of the people enjoy their holidays.
Your suggesyion of making it voluntary is valid though and should not forcer everyone to work during holidays but on the other hand if none of the employees are working on holidays then they will surely tell some of them to work.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
Yes, I think every company has different rules and understanding of work policies for its employees. I think that all of them have certain policies, such as calculating overtime and so on.

I have a friend who works in a foreign company, the employees who work are diverse, including Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Hindus and Buddhists, every time there is a long holiday for them, for example Christmas, Especially for believers who celebrate Christmas, they are given a holiday, as are other loyal employees. This is all for good and fair purposes, of course to keep the company's economy stable.

My understanding is that it is fair, except: when certain holidays arrive and certain employees are not allowed to take holidays and overtime is also not counted, that is indeed unfair, but if the holiday arrangements are appropriate for the company's employees, I think it is fair and where employees who work overtime can add economic value to their income.

The benefit of this situation is that shops and markets are open, you don't need to buy anything in advance. You can go out anywhere anytime during Christmas or New Year and shops will be open 24/7.

And I do not even see anything wrong with working during the holidays because let us assume that because we are on holiday we will eat there is no way that it is possible to if you are in the public sector then I don't think there is need to work during the holidays and even people that work during those holidays it won't be as much as when it is a normal working day because the holiday is a time that we have to spend with our families and friends and when we include, our spouse then it should be a beautiful moment you spend with your spouse so people on public sector need to take their life seriously because people that work in a public place are always not serious.

And most people who will make you work during holidays are supposed to add extra allowances to the person's income so we don't have to be bothered because when there is extra cash people will be encouraged to want to be willing to do more work but not everyone will be happy with extra work but with extra cash, everything will be in place so there will no need for the complaint because you are paid for the extra job.

and taking about does with business don't want to know if there is a holiday or not so it depends, what the person is doing and if they are doing something serios then they wont even think about the holidays.

If an employee is working overtime, that overtime should be paid. Businesses that exploit labor do not pay their employees for extra work for many different reasons. Some businesses do not realize that when they do not pay, their employees become less committed to their workplace. An employee's commitment to the business decreases, which affects production and profitability. Some details, although they may seem small, are important to a business and can affect the future of the business.

Businesses that value their employees for good and fair purposes always provide more from their employees. As the company's economy becomes more stable, both the business and the employees benefit. When employees see that their rights are being met, their trust in the business increases. Employees' commitment to the business is an important element for the future of some businesses; in order to ensure this commitment, it is necessary to give the employee their rights.

Yes you have a point, reason for holidays is for the workers to take a rest and resume at the appropriate time to resume their job. Most jobs that doesn't have a brake or holidays, the workers do quite because they probably need rest. One who does not go for brakes or holidays will not provide a good/quality service because when one is tired I don't think he or she could do better. However, if someone works in a place where he or she normally go for brakes or holidays the person will eventually have time for his family and also have the opportunity to do other personal activities.

As a child, I never thought about how important these Christmas holidays and vacations are. But now I feel their special importance. The thing is that these are truly family holidays, when those who have families should provide them with gifts and, of course, celebrate with them at the same table. You are definitely right that the employer should not force these workers to be strictly at work! Life is one and you need to pay maximum attention to your relatives and families. This is very important, and the sooner people understand this, the better for them.

When there's a public holiday workers should be allowed to rest, worker are human they are not robots if one works every day without rest it will affect his mental health, am against working on a holiday period, if they company can't short down because of the kind of service they render to people then then they should employ a lot of people and do it 1 week off for some people and 1 week in for some set like that works will have time for themselves and rest.

I think that more people work during holidays than during normal days. There are two types of people in my country - 1. There are people who work locally and 2. There are people who have one or two emigrants from their family sent to Europe or the US, they work there and send money to their families.
People who have emigrants from their families, never work, they are at home and have fun all the time but their relatives who work abroad for them, work very hard.
People who don't have emigrants and are forced to work locally, they work very hard all the time. Holidays don't exist for them because they have the possibility to earn more during holidays because of the Christmas market or double pay during holidays. Some are just forced by their employer to work during holidays or they won't receive their monthly salary. It's very rare to see someone working in good conditions, it's only available for those who work in the IT industry.

This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.
I would say it doesn't apply to all countries. Because in our country Muslims are about 92% and people of other religions are about 8%, as far as I know there are no Christians in our country. Now in any company or government institution in our country Muslims must be more and Hindus and other religions are very less. Now if Muslims are given Eid-ul-Fitr holiday in our country, then it will be possible to run the institutions with Hindus and other religions? Of course not it will not be possible to run the institution. But if Christmas and Hindu festivals are given holidays to Hindus and other religions then it will be possible to run the institutions with Muslim people. So holidays are given for major festivals of all religions in our country.

I support your opinion, because no one should work on holidays if the employer forces them to, especially on Christmas and New Year, because these are family holidays. In any case, the guys above are right when they write that the best thing would be if the employee had a choice - to go to work for increased pay, for example x2, or just to rest. But unfortunately, everything is not so rosy: many of my friends are now working, on their holidays, they were forced to, while they are not even paid increased pay. Due to the need for money, they went to work for their usual rate, and this is unfair.

I see nothing wrong if a company ask there employees to come to the work during holidays because if everybody decided to go for holidays how would the company survived because there are company that cannot shutdown for a minute do to the kind of operation they are doing so holidays are not something that would influenced them, however what I no that most companies normally do is that if the employee resumption of duty is during the holidays they would give them privileged to discuss with other coworkers that doesn't like those holidays to cover their weeks of work for them with the agreement that they would work twice than their supposed duration after they're back from the holidays.
That there are companies that can't shut down for a second due to their kind of operation is not an enough excuse to rip workers off their time with their family and friends during a holiday season, like op said, working during holiday season should be voluntary, not mandatory.

I am a christian and used to work for a company owned by a Muslim man, but he was a very good man, every holiday season, whether it be Christmas or Muslim celebration, he allowed both Christians and Muslims to go on a holiday, what he usually do is open the company for anyone that is willing to come to work, those who come recieves special bonus, they get paid x3 or x4 daily of their monthly salary divided by 30 days, and this money is paid immediately every day as soon as work close for that day, this made alot of people to still show up at work willingly disregarding the holiday.
This is what other companies should emulate and stop ripping their workers off their holiday season.

I agree with the part that workers should have the right to take a day off on their religious holidays, for example Christian workers have a day off on Christmas. In my own country, this has been implemented in many companies where Muslim workers will work on Christmas, and Christian workers will work on Eid al-Fitr - this way can give workers the opportunity to take a day off on their major religious holidays. Or another way is to exchange leave quotas between workers, but maybe this method must go through an agreement between workers.

Because basically a worker should have the right to take a day off on their major religious holidays, it's like it's part of the workers' rights here. I'm not saying that all workers can get this, because there are some fields that do need workers to be present 24 hours a day, but companies that can enforce this should implement this rule.

True, and I once worked in such a company, which was connected with the main continuous process, and because of this, even on holidays, the employer did not want to let anyone go, and this was the reason why I left there. I think this is not normal and religious holidays are important in autumn, on them we meet with the closest people, remember how good it was before, when we were little, and with our presence we show respect to parents and elders.
