How about you blame the customers? I mean if there was no demand there would be no supply right? You'll go to a store to buy something on a Christmas day and be like "I don't believe they're making you work on a Christmas day". What the hell are you in the store then?  Grin
If nobody gets injured or sick or needs a doctor's appointment, during the holidays there will be no need for hospitals during that period right? Grin

On a serious note though, I agree with OP to an extent. People should be given days off on their holidays. I guess that's why companies these days like to hire people from different religions to make things balanced. Governments usually give 3 days off for holidays. It's usually private firms that work during the holidays and even they give their staff a few days off.
Companies like radio stations, TV channels, stores, hospitals and more are needed during the holiday periods. I agree there should be a way to ration and give the staff days off.

Then companies should priortize employing people of unique religions. Because beliefs brings up traditions that requires holidays. Like Op mentioned, when the Christian religious workers approach their holiday period, Islamic staff would work shifts on their behalf. Between they're teams and are expected to cover up for one another on important events. Brands that only employ a specific set of people may find it hard to hand out holiday breaks, because the business will lose a lot that day.

I worked for 10 years in a call center and worked almost every holiday, including Christmas and New Years'. I had no choice but to go, or I would lose my salary and some benefits related to my absence, and I could be suspended or even fired because of it.

Likewise, I had to get used to it; after all, I have a family to support.

Nowadays, thank God, I work for myself, from home and doing what I love.

Very true. Good companies should do this because it will make everything will run well. If they are big companies, there must be many people involved. Those people probably have different religions. So, if the Islamic people have a celebration day that they need to have a holiday, other people with different religions can replace their works in the company. And when other people with different religions have a celebration day, Islamic people can work to replace them at that time. If the system in the company can work in this way, there will be no problem on holidays due to certain religious celebration days.

If people from different religious communities work in the workplace it will be easier to get holidays on the days of religious celebrations of each community. If a company can introduce a flexible system in the case of holiday work where employees of different religions can share work responsibilities with each other on the days of their respective religious festivals then there will be no disruption in the workplace due to holidays and the religious sentiments of everyone will be respected. This will help create a positive and inclusive environment in the workplace and remove the anxiety of employees in observing religious festivals.

But as far as I know, big companies will give holidays according to the existing red dates that have been set by the government. And we know that the government also regulates the rules for companies, except for certain companies such as in the service sector for example.

I think the company has also considered all of that, if they produce something then they have calculated how much will not be produced during the holidays. So far there has been no problem with that, even though there are long holidays such as New Year's holidays for example. But as I said, that's for other companies that are not in the service sector for example.

Actually, I think employees should not be made to work in the office on holidays. Because the owner of the company also has a family. If he can spend time with his family or friends, then it is completely unfair to make an employee work on holidays. Where should the owner think about the family of his employee, a person whose family is always waiting for him. If an employee calls home and says that he has a day off today and he will go home. At this time, if the company owner says that he has work in the office, he will not be able to go today. No one except the Creator knows how difficult that is for an employee and his family. The company should consider these aspects.

There are certain jobs on which you cant be able to stop working even if its holiday and everything is stated on the job contract and it will be that up to you whether you do accept or not. This is why its important that you should be reading up those terms and conditions on the contract before signing. You can always have the freedom whether you do accept the job or not on which at the moment or time that you do sign up contracts. It will be just that too impossible that you cant read up those terms because if your employer do forces you to work and its not stated in the contract then that would be a violation and thats not something that they wont risking into. There are certain jobs on which you do need up to make out those exemptions and be accepting on what you've been dealing into specially when you are needing up a job then you wont be having any choice but to deal up with it. So its a matter of choice and preference when it comes into this aspect.

Yes, it all depends on the beginning when we are accepted to work with the requirements, sometimes there are some types of work that cannot be postponed and must still be entered even on holidays, indeed the situation is very difficult but I think if the allowance is large enough, why don't we go to work on holidays as long as it is in accordance with the pay received, maybe it's like being forced to work on holidays but to have a decent job is very difficult to find at this time.

Employees are suffering in the hand of employers, some are even earning low wages but they don't give them any space to do things for themselves, all their lifes are dedicated to the company. Some barely have time for family and when it's holiday the company still give them tasks to do at home. Denying them of family fun, working during holiday to help the company is wrong.  Every staff deserves holiday free from work to have family fun time.

If the company owner forces work on you during holidays, do not do it. Because you have right to holiday and vacation.  Every good company should have a free work holiday policy.

Things like what you said usually happen in several government agencies such as hospitals or at gas stations where there must still be someone guarding them even on holidays. This means that things like that are not all in every place so that only a few places can feel it but those who work on holidays also don't get more benefits because it is a normal working day for them. However, if the one implementing this is a regular company that generally takes a day off on national holidays, of course there will be more benefits for the employees themselves.

Thats the sad truth or reality on what we do have in this world today that there are tons of slaves with those 8-5 jobs since they dont have any other way or options for them to be able to live. Just like on what been said above by others that if you dont like to work on holiday season and wanted to spend up your time with your family then dont take the job and dont sign the contract or agree with it since it is that against into your preference but getting a job and getting hired or chosen or selected turned out to be that a lucky thing because out of other applicants out there and you've been that get hired then thats already an opportunity for you to not to waste up such situation and thats why its unlikely that to those who had been hired or chosen will be declining such offer because they've been applying for the job since in the first place. If they do find out some terms that it is against their preference then they might be consider out on accepting it since they do wanted to have a job so badly. So you will be getting that pinched on the situation because of such aspect.

If there are people who do hate up with these holiday works or duties, there are ones who do wanted to have and would be willing on working with these kind of moment or days because they do know that they can earn even more on which this isnt that bad approach either. The need for money or having an income will be that situational into each person because not all doesnt really need up to spend up their time with their loved ones and would be giving out much more priority to make money or income because they do know that this is only where they could be able to rely on or they do able to save up money for the future or emergency purposes. Lets just that state into the fact that money is important and even comes into a point that you wont be caring up that much about having some time with your family but of course when the holiday season like Christmas and New year then these are times of the years on which most companies will definitely having some off but in speaking about into those non-legal or minor ones then you do end up on having a work but expect that it could pay up double or whatever the terms it could have.

Life itself isn't fair. Capitalism is the new name for slavery basically. Slaves used to wear iron collars, now they wear ties. When you think about it, an iron collar and a tie are exactly the same thing. And the best part is, most blue/white collar workers (yes they call them white/blue collar workers wtf) think it is their own decision to work like that. Actually some of them actually want to be slaves. They think it is a privilege, they feel lucky for that shitty job they got.

You tell me it is unfair to work during holidays but some employees don't give a damn because they make more money when they wageslave more and you know what? They can quit whenever they like. But they don't. Because their collar is not around their neck, it is in their heads.
The fact is all jobs are designed in such a way that will keep the worker in slavery call it what ever name that you want  to call it workers are slave and this modern life has made slavery so modernized that some times you can't even see it when it is in front of you this is the more reason why we should be more self reliant and acquire skills that will be of benefit to us.

Because the truth is what ever money that we are been paid as workers it's a good way of keeping us to be slaves because your salary is not actually your full worth and in this era where inflation is hitting the global economy salary can't be used in solving our problems so we should look beyond salary and think of something productive that will be of benefit to us as an individual

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?

I believe there is time for everything and at such i think a worker should be allocated such periods to get on with themselves let's say some free time for relief of stress, vacation or anything of such. Cause the human body ain't robots that tend to work 247 do they'll need to rest at some point so it's needed to take a break or experience done sort of holidays to have time for oneself, family and other things as well. So it's not a proper thing to work without observing any holiday or break, this is why some workers ask for leave in between their working duration cause they needed some rest.

There are certain jobs that require a lot of mental effort and concentration and most times these type of jobs can make you start having issues with your health. Sitting on a chair for hours and looking into a computer everyday without giving you body much break is capable breaking you down overtime. If you do your findings jobs that don't pay well are the ones they stress workers out the most, they pay them like ants and they don't give these workers the break they need. Money is important but your health should be your priority, anything that deprives you of sleep shouldn't be with considering.

You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
If we talk about whether it is appropriate or not, companies should not take away employees' time with their families during the holidays, but that's how the work system is and if we think it's inappropriate, they might invite us to quit. That's why I never like working with any company system because we will become their slaves and they continue to put us to work with that system.

It's better to build your own business because even though it's small, we are the ones who manage our time and we can work according to our own system. Working in someone else's place or a company automatically means we have to follow their system and we can't work as we please.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It's still up to that employee if he wants to work on that particular holiday or not. Most companies offer extra pay or salary if you will work on holidays. With the state of the economy right now that cost of living is not really cheap, most employees will definitely grab that chance to earn extra amount for their families. Take Japan for example, Japanese employees still goes to work during Christmas and New Years Day even though most countries treat it as a holiday.

Also, there are work industries where you really need to work during holidays. Hospital workers are not all allowed to take a dayoff on a holiday. Retail industry that offers goods and services are in-demand during holidays.

Working during holidays especially on Christmas day is totally not acceptable to me unless the company that I work for has other off days that they grant their employees. Working on Christmas day would be fine by me if my employer is willing to Grant me off days when ever I want it so I can spend time with my family, the purpose of working is to provide for my family but what's the essence of working for someone if I can't even spend time with family. Working for someone is really the hardest thing to do hence the reason why I'm considering opening up my own organization no matter how little it is so that I can work for myself instead.
I feel working on holidays as a punishment so I will never want to work on a Holiday for any event like Eid. But it will depend on the catagory of my department whether its a private industry or government service. If I was a soldier, I definitely have to sacrifice my happiness for other people. Some people have a different opinion, they continue to work behind the scenes to ensure that everything is in routine and runs smoothly. There are some workers who certainly have to work in order to secure other people or provide them a  peaceful environment. Healthcare workers, media professionals, military officers have to work weather its an Eid or any other festival because they are commited to their responsibility. I salute them because they sacrifice their personal joy so that we can enjoy our moments. Its quite challenging to stay away from their loved ones. Personally, I will not prefer working on a holiday on special events.

But for those who are regular employees, some of them prefer to come in on holidays because they get double pay on their daily rate for their work. And if they work overtime on holidays,
their pay is plus 30% as far as I know in our country.

But as much as possible, it would be better to spend the holiday season with our loved ones or our own family. But if you have a business,
it would be better not to let your employees come in and give them time to be with their families on holidays.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.

For me, I don't think it's fair to make an employee work during holidays. I think it should be voluntary - if you want to come to work, you can, but if you don't, you can stay home and celebrate with your family and friends.

Giving employees official holidays during their festive seasons should be part of their benefit package. I say "their festive seasons" because Christians may want to celebrate Christmas, Muslims may want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and Hindus may want to celebrate Diwali.

This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.

By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.

Closing offices during holidays for like two weeks might affect business revenue, but how much?

You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?

We have seen many cases where employees are made to work even though they are on leave. This is completely illegal and in my opinion it is not right to do this. Yes, if the employee wants to work, he can do it but forcing them to work is a big crime, and if caught, it is a form of torture. We should give time to our family when we have leave, and we should give time to the friends who are around us and spend happy time with them. We know that if we are only busy with work, people's minds are completely ruined and they feel lonely, so when we have leave, we should move around with joy.

We can't fight the company's system because it is stated in the contract how an employee must comply with all policies and if we don't like the system then we shouldn't work in a place like this. This is not about fairness or not because the company must ensure that there are workers who remain on standby in the office during holidays because some things require them to stay with certain considerations. Employees can also use their leave during holidays so that the company can assign these tasks to other workers and this is a little fairer in my opinion.

We work with the company's system and we should follow it, not about whether we like it or not because there are still many people out there who are waiting to be able to work to earn money, even though they have to work during any festive holiday. Maybe by enjoying it we can be more accepting of the system even though we lose time with our families during the holidays.

There are some type of jobs that require workers to work even on Christmas day...this is an oppression or you can call it an abuse because it's the worst regulation that anyone can ever follow.. the holidays are for people to have a good time and regain mental and physical energy, depriving them this would make them incapable of doing their duties properly...workers need time to relax and have fun with their family, without rest the brain cannot the way it is supposed to
